in east anglia and the far south—east. the low pressure will pull south as we head into the weekend, so it looks like it will affect wales and the south west of england with stronger wind and bands of rain, a little hill snow in places. it will ease down through the day. in north and eastern scotland, perhaps eastern england, one or two showers, wintering us on high ground. there could be dry weather with sunshine breaking through the cloud, and the wind will turn lighter. still cold, 4—7 c. the low slips away into the new continent eventually. there may be a few showers across north—east scotla nd few showers across north—east scotland and england through sunday. for most, a day of light winds. a cold start, prost around, mist and fog around which could be stubborn to clear for central and eastern areas. a grade a yearfor many to clear for central and eastern areas. a grade a year for many of us. “— areas. a grade a year for many of us. —— a grey areas. a grade a year for many of us. —— a grey day here for many of us.

us. —— a grey day here for many of us. next week, it stops cold and dry, but the latter part of the week could be more unsettled, with the atla ntic could be more unsettled, with the atlantic coming back to life. monday to wednesday, chile with a bit of frost around before it turns a little less cold by the end of the week. that's all from the bbc news at six — so it's goodbye from me — and on bbc one, we nowjoin the bbc‘s news teams where you are. there is centers. hello and welcome to sportsday. i'm lizzie greenwood—hughes. our headlines tonight... covid forces england's first one dayer in cape town to be postponed after a south africa player tests positive for the virus. it's the north london derby, but not as we know it, as fans are allowed back
6:33 pm
in to football. you've been having your say on var. i will tell you the latest on the results of the bbc poll, where not all of you are happy. also coming up in the programme: and rally monza is testing drivers‘ skills to the limit. can elfyn evans hang on to end britain's 19—year wait for a world champion? so lots to talk about on tonight's show. we're starting with the cricket, or lack of it, today because england's opening one dayer against south africa has been cancelled due to a south africa player testing positive for coronavirus. these were the scenes at newlands in cape town after the game
6:34 pm
was called off an hour before play was due to begin. the team bus carrying the england side was ordered to turn around before the players had even disembarked. the south africa player hasn't been named, but we know he was tested after the t20 series on thursday, which england won 3—0. well, the match is now due to take place on sunday, with the next two scheduled for monday and wednesday. cricket south africa's chief medical officer told their own media team they were looking at how the bubble may have been breached. clearly, there is a cause for concern, and england has expressed a concern. england is questioning the confidence that they have in the bio—secure environment, and rightfully so if there's been a player who contracted the virus in the last week. they have cause for concern and we respect their concern. we have met with the english medical

teams and we have kind of planned out a way. we will retest all of our players and hotel staff tomorrow, which is saturday, we'll await the results and determine a course of action. and then on tuesday, before the final odi on wednesday, we will retest the team again. well, earlier, ispoke to the south african cricket journalist natalie germanos, who told me the postponement is bad news for the sport there. from south africa's point of view, this is a concern, and you have to give credit to them and for going through the entire summer, able to get through the men's and women's without a positive case. you have to give them credit for that because that was a huge undertaking and to be the first to do it as well, because now other teams have an opportunity to learn. but i guess once you opportunity to learn. but i guess once you get first positive case, that happens within the team environment, again, that's a learning process, but there's no doubt it will be a conservative everybody involved. how is this going to impact south african cricket? this is the worst news for
6:36 pm
them right now, isn't it? it has not been a happy environment in south african cricket for last year or so, it's been a really tough year. and if you took the covid antinomy out of it, it has been a tough year for south african with everything happening in the boardroom, major sticklers asking for it... it was a hiccup with our members counsel, saying we do not want the new board, we are knocking to bring them on board, and eventually they had to after the sportsman street stepped in full to we've had some problems with south african cricket, lots of sponsors, i am with south african cricket, lots of sponsors, i am sure with south african cricket, lots of sponsors, i am sure lots of fans as well who are not happy with the situation itself, the fact that there has been a tour has been cancelled, all this type of things. it is very tough environment at the moment it is put much on edge most of the time, if you take the pandemic out of it, so not to have an odi of that which is the first
6:37 pm
tourin an odi of that which is the first tour in south africa since lockdown, tour in south africa since lockdown, to already have one of the games postponed, is a worry. and there is no guarantee that sunday, monday and wednesday are going to go ahead, because there's going to be another round of testing tomorrow as well, all the hotel staff, all the players retested, and if there is another problem, there is no way the rest of the tour is going to be able to go ahead. so it is the worst possible time for south africa, financially, they will take a major hit as well, and it is a worry for the rest of the summer, because we still got australia, pakistan and sri lanka coming to south africa as well. it isa coming to south africa as well. it is a major concern and things have to change very quickly. we know how it is going to affect south africa, but what about england? our cricket correspondent jonathan agnewjoins me now. how will this affect england in their upcoming plans? they are not
6:38 pm
happy at all. they believe there we re happy at all. they believe there were some bridges in the very strict particles that exist in these bubbles during the t20 series. bear in mind the two south african players tested positive before this series, but the latest player within that quarantine, in that bubble, and although they are in the same hotel, they are kept apart, but the fact that everyone has got to be retested, i' m that everyone has got to be retested, i'm hearing different things but i'm hearing from england the south africa's of intent to in which we —— the south africans are getting tested tonight. we should find out tomorrow. i would tested tonight. we should find out tomorrow. iwould imagine tested tonight. we should find out tomorrow. i would imagine only one more positive test for may south african player or the hotel staff there at the hotel, i suspect it will be called off, and that would bea will be called off, and that would be a real shame, will be called off, and that would be a realshame, not will be called off, and that would be a real shame, not least because as natalie was explaining there, this whole trip was done as a favour by england to south africa, who was a real mess, the first cricket they have taken on, and for it possibly to fall apart through a lack of
6:39 pm
discipline, i think would be a bit ofa discipline, i think would be a bit of a real shame for south africa. they would take a big hit from this. aggers, wall i have got you, i must pick your brain about this match between india and australia. this twe nty20 between india and australia. this twenty20 game involving a concussion subsidy. if summit is injured on the field commit means the replacement for that cricketer cannot bowl, in this case —— if someone is injured. him being one of the leading bowlers, who very clearly injured his leg while batting, subsequent to that, he was hit on the head by mitchell starc, but no one came out, there were no concussion tests, which they are supposed to do, but i suspect they viewed him as 0k, off they go to the interval, or comes out, awfully sorry, but he is feeling busy, and therefore he can
6:40 pm
have a concussion subsidy. and his subsidy candle. and he was man of the match. —— and his substitute cannonball. australia was upset about this. they managed to get a substitute, who has a very serious leg injury, to get a bowling substitute on the pitch. jonathan agnew, i suspect this is not the last time we would hear about that story. thank you very much. onto football, and a huge weekend for the premier league. up to 2,000 fans will be allowed to attend games located in tier 2 areas, which means the north london derby between spurs and arsenal on sunday will have spectators into the tottenham hotspur stadium for the first time since coronavirus restrictions were imposed last march. so what can the 2,000 lucky fans expect to see in the north london derby? it's an unusual situation for league leaders spurs to be so far ahead of arsenal in the table.
6:41 pm
craig templeton looks ahead to the game. totte n ha m tottenham have enjoyed a golden start to the season, a start that sees them perched at the top as the derby approaches. they are now unmistakably a mourinho team — organised, defenseless strong and unbeaten in nine league games. we all know that a derby that is this big match is nothing to do with form, with momentum, with injuries, with suspensions. that has nothing to do with that. it's just tottenham — arsenal. to do with that. it's just tottenham - arsenal. this been some concern over the fitness of this man, harry kane's can treated seven goals and nine assists so far, and his religion with son hueng—min has lit up religion with son hueng—min has lit up the league. —— relationship a stu b up the league. —— relationship a stub i could do some bluff that he is in big trouble. he is not in big
6:42 pm
trouble. i believe he is going to play. on the other side of north london, the picture has been considerably bleaker, arsenal said 13 places below their neighbours and mckellar tessa is in his hardest speu mckellar tessa is in his hardest spell —— mikel arteta. despite winning silver in his first season, people asserting to question whether this is true. unlike spurs, his main man have not been firing, although perhaps a 4—0 win in the europa league. the slide. we created many chances. into sunday, a very special game, we are looking forward to it and let's do it again. mourinho has never lost a home game in his career against arsenal, all signs point to against arsenal, all signs point to a totte n ha m against arsenal, all signs point to a tottenham win, but this season has been anything but predictable. craig templeton, bbc news.
6:43 pm
well, champions liverpool will be keeping a keen eye on that game, only below spurs of course on goal difference. their home game with wolves won't be allowed fans because the city is in tier 3 and managerjurgen klopp has been very vocal on the debate over the number of substitutes, accusing the fa of "ignoring player welfare" after they refused to increase it to five. it's about all the players. and it's about load management and nothing else, and load management not for getting an advantage, load management for dealing with the problem, what this covid situation is for football, dealing with the situation in the best possible way. and we cannotjust ignore it because some people say that it would be an advantage for others, because it is not about an advantage. i cannot say it often enough. now, let's round up some of today's other football stories. and nice have sacked manager patrick vieira after

two and a half years. the former france and arsenal midfielder had watched his side lose their last five games, including thursday's defeat to bayer leverkusen which confirmed nice's exit from the europa league. they're11th in ligue 1. dundee united will be without nine players for tomorrow's scottish premiership match at livingston due to close contact with staff members who tested positive for covid—19. manager mickey mellon and the whole coaching staff are now having to self—isolate. and manchester united are installing 1,500 barrier seats early next year as they prepare to trial safe standing at old trafford. the seats will be put into the northeast section of the stadium. last year, wolves put rail seats into one area of molyneux as a response to persistent standing by supporters. now, it's the third and final day of the bbc sport fans on football poll. and today, we're talking about var. it's been in place for nearly a season and a half in the premier league,

but what do you make of it? iam laughing, i am laughing, ben crutcher is joining us. i am laughing, and i am laughing, ben crutcher is joining us. iam laughing, and i probably should not be, because we should be impartial at the bbc, but i would imagine not everyone is happy with var. you are right. what did we talk about before var? if we were allowed in pubs, it would be a hot topic for sure. every weekend, we seem to have some talking points. how many times do we see a situation like this? players standing around. a message on the big screen. when fans were allowed inside, they were clueless. it's improved a bit this season, but is everything perfect? well, comres has polled 2,100 football fans and found some interesting, if not unsurprising, views on var. this is the kind of thing we're talking about. marginal offside decisions. slow—mos.
