not, you might hear someone crying, that'll be me. traders here and across the uk are banking on the late christmas rush to help make up for lockdown losses. back to our main story now — almost 5000 lorry drivers are being held in the english county of kent — waiting to cross the channel at dover. let's return to dover, and reporter amanda akass. we have reports of frustration and scuffles. a lot of people been saying to you? i am standing on the roundabout right outside the port itself. as you can see, behind me the police are still blocking the road with hundreds of cars, vans and lorries backing up throughout central dover. that is the port

itself. there is another line of police in front of that. no one has been going in or that for several hours. that is causing huge frustrations. i've been speaking to people who have been here since sunday night. one man told me, i am out of food, drink, and money. there is no where to go to the toilet here. i've had people crying to me saying they were hoping to get back to see their children in time for christmas. they don't know what's going on. that's quite difficult for the people here at dover. unlike the drivers at manson, they are not in touch with what has been going on. they haven't been receiving access to testing or hot meals, which we are told is now beginning to start here. people say they don't know what they're going to do. they say they don't know how to get past to get onto the fairies because they can't go back. both sides of the

road here are completely blocked. it isa road here are completely blocked. it is a difficult situation. we have heard from the leader of dover council. he said he doesn't see helping everyone here will be able to get across the channel to get there in time for christmas even when the port is open. people in dover are volunteering. there are stands of people offering food, drinks and refreshments to the drivers, and it is sorely needed. we will keep an eye on the situation in dover and any movement for those lorry drivers who want to get home for christmas. the first report about mass community testing for coronavirus in the uk has been published. it looks into the voluntary testing trial which took place in liverpool from early november. calum semple is a professor of child health and outbreak medicine at the university of liverpool and has just attended a briefing about the report.

thank you forjoining us so quickly. in essence, what is the report saying thus far about the pilot scheme? we set it up quickly and in two weeks we've got preliminary results. we are happy to share the interim results for the first phase. the top line is, we don't support mass community testing on a citywide basis. it is not feasible. but what we basis. it is not feasible. but what we have discovered is incredibly useful, is a systematic testing for testing to released from quarantine, testing to released from quarantine, testing to released from quarantine, testing to protect vulnerable people in care homes and testing to enable visitors to care homes. also very successful in schools, school teachers liked it. school pupils we re teachers liked it. school pupils were able to cope with it. so, although it is not a perfect test, we've got good take—up and the community likes it. importantly, we

haven't seen harm. we haven't seen people treating it as a freedom pass. there is nothing to suggest that people take the test and go out behave badly. we have been keen to get positive messaging saying, this doesn't mean you can't catch it today and give it to someone else in a few days' time. on that point of view, it has been a great success enabling our community and getting back into society. it is interesting that you said say that the community likes it. does that mean there is good take up even though it was volu nta ry? good take up even though it was voluntary? large percentage of our population took up the test despite scaremongering of the press. also interestingly, this test got into parts of the city that are highly deprived. they are essentially excluded for high—speed internet and the latest phone. we were able to get testing to the deprived areas of the city and the parts of the city

where people find it hard to engage with the traditional test and trace process. in terms of what anyone listening to you should take away from this, is your overriding thought that what is useful is still targeted testing? you talked about vulnerable groups, for example, schools. yes, targeted testing is worthwhile doing. it is not a perfect test, but neither is the pcr. if you think about having three people in the river, and you have two life rings, you will still throw your two life rings and pick up two of them. in cheshire and merseyside, we of them. in cheshire and merseyside, we have broken just of them. in cheshire and merseyside, we have brokenjust under two of them. in cheshire and merseyside, we have broken just under two and half thousand chains of transmission in the last month. if you do the thought experiment, each one of these people doing the virus to one or —— giving the virus to 1:21.7
