hello, i'm olly foster, these are our final sportsday headlines of 2020. king of the track and now knight of the realm. that caps a remarkable year for sir lewis hamilton. farewll to the doc. the former manchester united and scotland maanger who has died at the age of 92. and on new year's eve, we look ahead to what we all hope and a look back at at the year that brought the greatest challenges. we will look back at the moments that stand out in 2021. hello there, few will look back at 2020 with any great fondness but it's arguably been the best year
6:32 pm
of lewis hamiltons career. breaking records in formula 1 and now he's been knighted. sir lewis hamilton is one of a number of sportsmen and women who have been recognised in the new years honours list. adam wild reports. in a year of unprecedented challenge, lewis hamilton has excelled. leading from the front, he won a seventh world formula 1 title just days after being crowned bbc sports personality of the year and he now becomes sir lewis hamilton. he deserves his knighthood. he has always been an exceptional talent. but it is incredible what he has achieved this year. it's not a good year for most of us on the planet, but a pretty good for him. jimmy greaves, one of english football's greatest ever goal—scorers, is awarded an mbe as is his fellow world cup—winner ron flowers.
6:33 pm
british billiejean king cup captain anne keothavong also becomes an mbe. and after a ao—year career in sport including snooker, darts and boxing, promoter barry hearn receives an 0be. it isa it is a wonderful moment and i am deeply honoured to receive this. the best thing that has come into my life for a long time. i am really chuffed. also honoured the former rugby league star rob burrow for services to his sport and his awareness campaign since being diagnosed with motor neurone disease. rugby league players, and former players, they don't get too many of these awards, but he does not need a medalfrom us. he deserves every honour. so proud of him.
6:34 pm
0ther recipients in the new year list include director of rugby rob baxter at exeter chiefs who gets an 0be, and the captain joe simonds becomes mbe. former england captain gillian coulthard appointed mbe for services to football. and for his charity work, former jockey bob champion becomes a cbe. adam wild, bbc news. let's just get some more on lewis hamiltons knighthood. earlier i spoke to michael eborda, who helps compile the annual powerlist, britain's most influential people of african and african caribbean heritage. hamilton topped that this year as well. ina in a sport that is quite an elite sport in many ways, it is totally non—diverse from an ethnicity point of view. for him to make this sort of view. for him to make this sort of stamp that he has made particular over the past 12 months i think is so
6:35 pm
over the past 12 months i think is so laudable and it is testament to the man that he is. he has been in that position for a long time as the only black formula i driver. why do you think, he has formed his own hamilton commission pushing for change in f1? he wants to see more diversity in the hiring of engineers, in the hiring of people in tech, in the hiring of people in pr and media. and he is doing it pretty much single—handedly. he has got mercedes to change from silver to black, specifically in support of equality for some he has got a number of the drivers to take a knee before every race. and he has made a number of stands when he was on the podium when he has one during his black lives matter t—shirt and a black lives matter t—shirt and a black lives matter mask. as i say he did not have to do that, the fact that he has i think makes him even
6:36 pm
more great than he is a driver. michael eborda they're reflecting on lewis hamilton's knighthood. the former manchester united and scotland manager tommy docherty, the doc, has died at the age of 92 after a long illness. he spent most of his playing career at preston and was capped 25 times by scotland. let's speak to lou macari, who was in the united side that won the fa cup under docherty in 1977. many thanks for joining many thanks forjoining us on sportsday, move. a big character in the game. in the dresser room there was fun and laughter, he took the pressure off of all players, and whether it was a leaky game or a massive game in the fa cup final that you mentioned back in 77, and probably at the time brinkerhoff was around,
6:37 pm
it was nip and tuck to the biggest character between him and brian were, you never wanted him to leave. and had he stated 0ld were, you never wanted him to leave. and had he stated old trafford for a bit longer, who knows what could've happened. he had a good spell at chelsea as well in the 60s but united this evening in a statement say that he was a pivotal figure in the club's history and he brought back those exciting times at the clu b back those exciting times at the club in his five years. he did and when we got relegated, i want to ever forget when we got relegated, i want to everforget it, he when we got relegated, i want to ever forget it, he came when we got relegated, i want to everforget it, he came into when we got relegated, i want to ever forget it, he came into the dressing room and he stood in front of us and said, "it is a bad day for us of us and said, "it is a bad day for us but you will be back, you will be backin us but you will be back, you will be back in style, and will be back as champions." and that happened, and the same happened a few years later when we went to wimbley surprisingly lost to southampton because everyone thought we would just win the fa cup that day and when we came into jetta, he says the same thing that
6:38 pm
day. "don't worry you will be back next yea r" day. "don't worry you will be back next year" which is hard to say because it's not easy to get to wimbley. "you will come back next year and when next year." losers... we express it against southampton and he promised us that day that getting back to wimbley and he said before the game, "right, i told you you would be back. now you have to do the rest of the job which is go and win it." and it did happen. it certainly did, lou macari many things for sharing your memory of tommy docherty, the doctor is doctor 0r died at the age of 92 today. let's have a quick look at some of the other headlines, manchester united will surely mark tommy docherty‘s death at their match at home to aston villa tomorrow. but striker edinson cavani won't be involved, he's been banned for three games and also fined £100,000 by the fa for a social media post earlier this month which was deemed
6:39 pm
to be racially offensive. he'll also miss the league cup semifinal against manchester city and their fa cup tie against watford. the wolves manager nuno espirito santo has been charged by the fa over the comments he made about the referee lee mason after their defeat to burnley ten days ago. he said mason wasn't good enough to officiate in the premier league and couldn't control the players. the motherwell manager stephen robinson has resigned following last night's defeat to kilmarnock. they're third bottom of the scottish premiership. robinson had been in charge for three years. assistant keith lasley will take the team for saturday's trip to hamilton. andy murray has pulled out of a tournament in florida next week because he wants to minimise the risks ahead of the australian 0pen that starts on february eighth. players have to pass a series of covid tests during a 14—day quarantine in melbourne. and england's jason roy was in good form in the australian big bash league. roy helped perth scorchers to their first win of the season, hitting 49 as they beat the adelaide strikers by seven wickets. so many sports events were wiped out this year — the olympics, the european championship, wimbledon, the ryder cup.
6:40 pm
we've got everything crossed that 2021 will make up for it, rather than look back at a fairly miserbale year, joe lynskey is here with some reasons to be cheerful about the next 12 months of sport. those major sporting offence of 2021 are the ones that have been pushed back from 2020. —— the euros, the lipids, and the paralympics. well the two major sporting events next year are the ones pushed back from 2020. but away from the euros and the olympics and paralympics, every sport is hoping to make 2021 the year they regain momentum — and in britain, it could bring the biggest boxing bout in a generation. for great britain. this is why tyson fury against anthonyjoshua matters so much. they hold all the heavyweight world title belts between them. so, a fight would produce the first unified champion since lennox lewis in 1999. so, can it happen? and can it take place in the uk? well, that will depend on how quickly the country can get crowds back in stadiums. only a full wembley would raise the money both camps need.
6:41 pm
0therwise, fury against josuha will probably happen in saudi arabia or the united states. each fighter would stand to earn about £100 million each. but this isn't just about money. after such a difficult year for boxing, where some titles have been won in back gardens, both fighters know what this means for the sport. what we are trying to do is aim for sometime in june, what we are trying to do is aim for sometime injune, sometime around there to give us a window. it means everything to me. he spoke highly of me, ispeak everything to me. he spoke highly of me, i speak of him, he is a great town and i think in this special climate to the best heavyweights in the world, for me and him, competitor to competitive, it is massive. but for the world and for the world to now see the importance of grassroots boxing, it is bigger than me and him. anthony josh was speaking earlier this month. rugby union and rugby league have both had their schedules hit
6:42 pm
hard by the pandemic — but the second half of next year brings two stand out events in the women's rugby world cup and a british and irish lions tour. now this should be one of the most exciting lions fixtures ever — they're going to south africa, the world champions, and off the back of that historic drawn series last time in new zealand. but preparation will depend on how rugby can cope with the rising number of cases among players. the same's true ahead of the women's rugby world cup — but there is hope. domestic rugby has continued here with the premier 15s, with different rules to limit close contact, and that could be so important to england as they look to build towards september. we feel fairly privileged as a group to be able to keep playing rugby this year and how we have done and that a lot of people have not been able to and miss out. so to be able to put on a show next year and hopefully go to that world cup into
6:43 pm
thejob will be hopefully go to that world cup into the job will be massive for back home and hopefully we can make people enjoy it and put a smile on people enjoy it and put a smile on people pots faces. well, cricket got round covid in 2020 with bio—secure bubbles, but this sport will hope the game's changed by november, when it's the ashes. just like 2019 it comes just off the back of a busy schedule, with england booked in for two test series, and a world t20 in india, which finishes the same month as the first test in brisbane. but the ashes just wouldn't be the same without the barmy army — and given australia has imposed tough travel restrictions through this pandemic, how confident can we be of seeing those fans fly out there in 11 months‘ time? i think there is reasons to be relatively optimistic about the series being played under broad wheat summer conditions to what we have seen in previous ashes series. as for the crowd, what's of the situation with covid improves that all the fans can come to austria. it
6:44 pm
isn't just a all the fans can come to austria. it isn'tjust a contest between austria and england when they play the ashes in australia. it is a celebration of the history of the game with so many travelling there to make it a pilgrimage of sorts when you are there on boxing day with 91,000 people. it is everything for us, but the travel restrictions will mean that people can come to australia and can have that huge australian stadium filled. it is those crowds we're waiting to see come back, 0lly. so many events next year depend on them — the ryder cup, the solheim cup, wimbledon, and the small matter of england against scotland at wembley at euro 2020. the date for your diary, the 18th of june for that one at wimbley. keeping everything cross, joe, many thanks for a much better year hopefully. that's all from sportsday. 0ur our final sportsday 0urfinal sportsday of our final sportsday of the year. happy new year. next on the bbc news channel, it's the travel show.
6:45 pm
let's be honest, it hasn't been the best year for travel. but amid the gloom, we've still found moments of inspiration and seen parts of the world, albeit sometimes virtually, that would take your breath away. laughs i can't do it! welcome to our look back at 2020. what a year it's been and it all started so well. wow! lucy took a trip to a simulated martian outpost in the caves of northern spain. in argentina, mike went to the world's second—biggest wetland and took a dunking. oh and we're away!
