this is bbc world news, the headlines violence and chaos in the heart of washington dc, tonight at ten. violence and chaos in the heart of washington dc as president trump's supporters as president trump's supporters storm the us capitol building. police say a woman is in storm the us capitol building. a critical condition after being shot in the chest. they clashed with police, who were heavily outnumbered and said they were demanding that members of congress refuse and i cannot to approve the result of the presidential election. inside, while us lawmakers took ican i can confirm that someone sustained a gunshot wound inside. cover, there was an armed stand off as senior republicans and democrats called for an immediate end with protesters inside the senate to the protests, president chamber prompting this response trump finally appeared from the president—elect. i am genuinely shocked and called for peace. and saddened that our nation, so long a beacon of light and hope this was a fraudulent election. but for democracy, has come to such a dark moment. we cannot play into the hands of these as senior republicans and democrats called for an immediate end to the protests — the president finally appeared with this message.
10:01 pm
this was a fraudulent election, but we cannot play into the hands of these people. we have to have peace. so go home. donald trump may say that now but i spoke to several of the people who stormed the building and they say it was his words and actions of recent days that inspired them to do that. we'll have the latest on the tumult in washington just two weeks ahead ofjoe biden‘s inauguration. also tonight: a special report from inside the intensive care unit of a leading london hospital where the covid crisis has brought the system to breaking point. people asking for your help, you just don't know who to help first.
10:02 pm
and the lockdown restrictions for england came into force at midnight making it illegal to leave home without good reason. and coming up in the sport and bbc news... it was a lively start to the efl cup semi final between manchester united and manchester city. we'll tell you who's joined tottenham in the final. i was just right up at the phone a few minutes ago at one point a man tells this iphone through a megaphone so he could play out president terms message. afterwards he shouted to the megaphone faces commander—in—chief. he's telling us to go home, go home. some people said they were but then a man extra said they were but then a man extra said they were but then a man extra said they trump supporters to go home. those of us who are real constitutionalist, we should stay because we have a duty to defend

democracy against election fraud. that's a situation right now. as the evening falls here outside the capital. as you know the mayor has called a curfew for six p:m.. so barbara we have had reports from inside the capital saying they plan to stay here all night to stop the certification ofjoe biden as the next president of the united states you say as darkness falls the crowd is thinning out where you are do you think their plan all along was to breach security at the capital? it's difficult for me to say. precisely even the way that they were able to, that's the latest mobile and i don't know if you heard that. yeah, it looks as if there was a fair amount of organisation ahead of time. into the building and carry out this occupation of it. certainly the
10:04 pm
trump supporters that we came to the capital with were surprised to hear the news. they were very excited by it they are the ones who are pushing up it they are the ones who are pushing up onto the outside stairs. the operation inside seems to have happen and a fairly planned way. although i don't have confirmation oi’ although i don't have confirmation or details about that barbara. when you've been speaking to protesters asi you've been speaking to protesters as i know you have is a move from the white house to the capital. what do they tell you they want? what are their names? well, they mostly want to be, they want the election to be reversed because they say there has been a massive election fraud. that's their main demands. president trump at the election stolen from him and they want that reversed was not it's a much bigger thing as well. we will quite quickly switched
10:05 pm
to speaking and exit essential terms about the united states was up they will be saying that they are here because they want to protect the constitution and to protect freedom, america's freedom. they say that if the democrats take over their democrats have stolen the election, they will bring socialism they are in cahoots with china they will crush american individual freedoms. and the ones i've spoken to are quite passionate and sound kind of scared. they also talk about turbulence ahead. they say if this goes ahead, at the election is not reversed if the election results aren't honoured there will be civil war. ina aren't honoured there will be civil war. in a number of people, i'm not sure if you're hearing but we are getting a lot of flash bang now of smoke. as they are trying to clear people from the front. as i was saying, they are feeling that this is the last dance was up that this is the last dance was up that this isa is the last dance was up that this is a very important stance to take. one mani is a very important stance to take. one man i said talk to said this was the most important day of his life was that they feel very strongly about it. okay. barbara outside the

capital. the us president electjoe biden has spoken today. he called the siege and unprecedented assault on american democracy and said it boarded on sedition. he also called on what he called the mob to pull back and allow the work of democracy to go forward. take a listen. the words of a president matter. no matter how good or bad that president is. at their best the words of a president can inspire. at their worst they can insight. and therefore i call on president trump to go on national television now. to fulfil his oath and defend the constitution. and demand in and to
10:07 pm
this siege. joe biden gone on present trump to step up. joined by my heart north american political reporter. the us capital has been breached. confess i'm reading this on social media since 1814 when the british attacked it. i think covering the mac had been covering american politics for years i've never seen american politics for years i've never seen anything like this. i woke up expecting a ten stay in washington but nothing like this kind of scale. you spend your time watching this. what is your reaction to this? it's got wrenching. it is heartbreaking to see the us capital where those of us who cover politics regularly go. walk those very hallways that we saw the protesters storming through. seeing security with guns drawn the house of
10:08 pm
representatives. those are images as you rightfully know, they have no president in modern american political history for top you have to date back to the british army burning the capital down to get anything close. which is truly remarkable. i remember watching in michigan the protesters, donna trump supporters storming the state house and thinking that could never happen here in washington, dc. security is much too tight. they are reality is that security is not there and these protesters were able to get in i think that is eye—opening for many americans. do you think that the presidents words outside the white house when he said we will never concede when he urged them to go down to the capital said that he mightjoin them down there when they we re mightjoin them down there when they were talking about fighting for trump, fight for trump. can we draw a direct line between what the president said outside the white house beside sleep mac and the scenes we saw on capitol hill this
10:09 pm
evening? i think you can. donald trump has been stoking this sentiment for months now. if you remember the night that he lost the presidential election on election night he got out there and said the election was being stolen from him. he has expressed that sentiment time and time again. and you circled this day the 6th of january as a time for a final showdown. he's been talking and tweeting about it for weeks now. and for him to stand out there. and his supporters to stand up there and speak to that crowd. rudy giuliani has lawyer sent this was going to be a trial by combat. those were common to supporters heard. donald trump directed them at the capital and when they got there, they acted on his word. i think there is going to bea his word. i think there is going to be a very real response ability left at donald trump eight for the actions of this support is today. and to give a message saying we love you, go home but you are very special. that was not the sort of step up message i thinkjoe biden
10:10 pm
had suggested to the nation. we are political reporters you and i and over the years we have seen an awful lot that has been shocking. and no longer surprising anymore. but when i asked you the question about your reaction clearly you are quite shocked by what you see and shaken as an american by lacey. i'm assuming that a lot of americans are going to watch the scenes on capitol hilland going to watch the scenes on capitol hill and they too are going to be quite shocked and shaken by this assault on the democratic process. do you think it takes some of the wind out of the sails of president trump argument that the election was ifind it very i find it very hard to ifind it very hard to imagine returning to the capital in the coming days and picking up with a left off with republicans ted cruz challenging the results of the selection and was already before it began going to be a futile attempt to plug joe biden from becoming
10:11 pm
president. at the donald trump power was sorry began to wane. he saw republicans being a bit more vocal in the criticisms of him after that fall in georgia, the two defeats of the candidates in georgia and donald trump's power was strained to have a little bit. and they said this is not the direction of the republican party was in, donald trump should not speak for the republican party and every will will be a battle within the republican party for months to come. it is extraordinary how much things have changed in american politics and the candidates for that other senate seat in georgia and democrats and joe biden
10:12 pm
to have control. this is being watched by the rest of the world there is full international cover for this been going on in capitol hilland for this been going on in capitol hill and international support has been pouring in. the british prime minister tweeted. this is not just this is notjust being watched by americans as allies, it's being watched by america's adversaries as well. it's being watched in beijing, north korea, it is being watched in tehran, iran, and turkey, they are watching what is happening here in the transitions are also fragile moments in american politics. this one has proved to be extremely
10:13 pm
fragile and america's adversaries are prone to take advantage of these kinds of moments. my colleague also in capitol hill, what are you seeing? we are just outside the government building as you can see injust in the government building as you can see in just in the last few minutes after a roll of an hour or so, we heard sound bombs, tear gas being deployed and i was just, you heard sound bombs, tear gas being deployed and i wasjust, you can make out the top level of all of this, the stage and the scaffolding of set up the inauguration in two weeks' time donald trump support is taking over all of that area all around the building and their right up around the building and their right up the steps of the back of the building right to the door of the government building in which has been shut now but no sense of people suddenly leaving in less than an
10:14 pm
hour of the curfew when it comes into force. what are the protesters saying to you? to the field is been a victorious moment for them? yes. they are quite giddy when we talk to them. focusing on some of the people who actually manage to enter into the building in the sense us trying to get was as to whether or not this is something that was planned and several people now and none of them said it was part of the plan of the day to actually get inside of the building. they said all of them, they felt inspired by the words of donald trump to march to the capital, to take back their country and they interpreted that as really having to make their presence felt but they also, once they got here and perform security in your past security and talking about security
10:15 pm
stepping back and that's why some of them found themselves in the building. one of them described the fa ct building. one of them described the fact that knocking on doors inside the capitol building and found themselves inside the chamber and we saw another woman who had injured her leg being pulled out of the window to get back out of the capitol building. but still, extraordinary scenes here as hundreds over the capital grounds. another member of congress when the capital police told them to hide under their desks surrender their chairs to get down low because they we re chairs to get down low because they were concerned about the security of the safety of those members. donald trump posted this. i know your pain, i know you're hurt, we had an
10:16 pm
election that was stolen from us. it was a landslide election. and eve ryo ne was a landslide election. and everyone knows it. especially the other side. but you have to go home now. we have to have peace. we have to have law and order and we have to respect our great people in law and order. we don't want anyone heard. it isa order. we don't want anyone heard. it is a very tough period of time. it's never been a time like this where such a thing happened when they could take away from all of us. taking it away from you, for me, from our country. this was a fraudulent election. but we cannot play into the hands of these people. we have to have peace. you're very special, we love you, you see what happens, you see the way others are treated that are so bad and so evil. i know how you feel. but go home and go home in peace. donald trump
10:17 pm
telling supporters, that they've been watching the days events unfold, hejoins been watching the days events unfold, he joins me been watching the days events unfold, hejoins me now, john, i wa nt to unfold, hejoins me now, john, i want to give your reaction, covering this administration on capitol hill. i think the clip he played there was the single contradiction of the dawn trump presidency and just imagine that it was black lives matter protesters who had stormed the capital, broken windows, gotten in their arms, we be saying we love you and your very special people? i do not think so. another contradiction is the donald trump rules for his side of the aisle. he's got his base and he never says anything to upset the base. and how can you argue that you the party law and order and you believe in laws. you are a nation of laws when the place you litigate this is in the court, which is what the donald trump campaign of done
10:18 pm
within your rights. 62 occasions, lot 61 cases. no one has found fraud, the attorney general did not find fraud, the person charge of electoral security did not find fraud, the head of the fbi did not find fraud, mitch mcconnell said today that there was no fraud. so, how can you say go home and accept this and at the same time as you say it was a fraud and on the basis of no evidence. that is why i think you have got this discord in the united states which is frightening. i think america is on edge tonight and the shining city on the hill, the light is flickering dangerously. john want to pick up on what you are inferring there, what do americans allies make of this, do they put this down to the last gasps of the trump administration and the chaos of the last four years? does the streets more serious questions about the
10:19 pm
solidity of america's democratic institutions and concerns amongst americans allies? i think it shows the democratic institutions cannot be taken for granted and that although the us constitution has shown itself to be a pretty resolute document over the past four years, the seams are being torn at tonight and there is a fragility to us democracy, you ask with their thinking in london and the last time asi thinking in london and the last time as i understand it, that the capitol building was stormed was in 1814 by the british when britain was trying to ta ke the british when britain was trying to take back control of the united states of america and the fledgling republic. and of course they designed a constitution, the founding fathers, that would be robust and not let too much power master one person too much. there will be some people that say that too much power has been amassed by donald trump but those who should've known better to try to keep him in check did not do thatjob in so late
10:20 pm
in the day, mitch mcconnell, the vice president, some others are for the first time well, stop! and those who argue that should have been set up who argue that should have been set upa who argue that should have been set up a little bit earlier. very tense washington, dc tonight. of course a curfew to try and disperse those demonstrators outside capitol hill. but no indication that they have any plans to leave that building yet. joining me now democratic strategists and former adviser to president george w. bush ron christie. ron, let me start with you. and get your reaction to what has happened today. particularly in the light of what president trump side to the protesters outside the white house. to tell them to march on the capital saying perhaps he would join them there. in saying that he would never concede. it's a
10:21 pm
sad day for democracy. the notion that you have the president of the united states speaking out to his supporters, not conceding, not recognising what it happened with a peaceful tra nsfer of recognising what it happened with a peaceful transfer of power to the ballot box. and what were seeing u nfold ballot box. and what were seeing unfold now on capitol hill is utterly disgraceful. the notion that he has not taken to the airwaves, that he is not asked his supporters who are marching in his name to stand down, to stop assaulting police officers, to stop really running ramps out through the capital. really demonstrates asjohn said a few minutes ago a scene that we haven't seen here in washington since the battle of williamsburg in 1814. we had mayhem in the capital. this needs to start and stop immediately. amanda, it doesn't look like it's going to stop tonight. what happens now on capitol hill to members of congress? do they come back and carry on thier debate about the certification of joe back and carry on thier debate about the certification ofjoe items election was met or how we move
10:22 pm
beyond that? they must come back and finish this. that's the key message here. that's what they are beginning to come together to say. but everybody recognises anarchy cannot win. the capital is the place where people come to gather and make things happen when the moment is supposed to. when the moment comes to these leaders and right now as they are all in the basement, i've been there in the capital when you have protests or when you have marches when people get nervous and worried. it is a real test right now our leaders coming together to say we are not going to be held back. progress is going to continue. and that's really the charge right now from any of those members of congress who are trying to move forward. you cannot stop and allow this to hold anything back. america's watching come of the world is watching and we will see that unfold. i suspect and conversations are happening. how do they carry on the business of what they were already doing and not being held back by this moment. because that's a message into itself about peaceful
10:23 pm
transfer of power. do you think there is a chance that this does bring democrats and republicans together on capitol hill and perhaps those who are on the fringes of american politics has actually overplayed their hands today?” american politics has actually overplayed their hands today? i do. you saw that early on with mcconnell coming out. you really did see the split in the republican party. and then this happens right after. which will solidify. there is nothing quite like being locked in a basement, calling your loved ones and saying i'm ok, i'm safe. this brings her to a whole new level. and you already start to see both chuck and mcconnell start to work together in the early statement this morning. i think that's the momentum to build off of. if you're sitting in the capital you understand the real duty and power of this institution, you have to look at yourself in the mirrorand have to look at yourself in the mirror and say is this worth it and how do we bring it together again? i think there is nothing to have things you call your family from the
10:24 pm
basement to say your are okay. ron, power has shifted in american last 48 hours was that it is the republican party still at the party of donald trump? i wish i could a nswer of donald trump? i wish i could answer that question. i think this is going to have far ranging ramifications about what many conservatives, many republicans think about the 45th president of the united states was topped i have been a staunch republican, a staunch conservative but i have to say to you, for having worked in capitol hill for eight years and worked in the white house for four i've never seen anything like this. in the notion that the president of the united states would not speak out forcefully to denounce this has me questioning whether republicans are loyal to a man or whether they are loyal to a man or whether they are loyal to a country. and this conservative is loyal to his country and the constitution. i think a lot of republicans again is scratch their heads and think about this. ron, amanda thank you very much for
10:25 pm
joining me on this very dramatic day here in american politics. you can find all of the today's news on website to keep following us on twitter as well we will have full coverage of the events here. thanks for watching. hello the first week of 2021 is certainly been a cold and wintry when the temperatures well below average. in some of us has seen sleet and snow around. a bit of sunshine around for that this was picture taken on wednesday afternoon in county durham. the coming few days at no great change in the general theme to the weather. things are stained cold. further ice and snow for some of us was also some freezing fog to contend with. before things eventually start to turn a bit milderfrom the weekend eventually start to turn a bit milder from the weekend onward. before we get there, we are still in this cold air. during wednesday it was piling in from the north or north westerly direction for a week weather from pushing its north westerly direction for a week weatherfrom pushing its way north westerly direction for a week weather from pushing its way in from the northwest was that through thursday morning that will bring some snow to parts of scotland into
10:26 pm
far north of england. could be several centimetres of snow across northern island for a time we get to north and some freezing fog also lightly pressed parts of england and wales particular northwest went england into the north midlands into wales. we do see the freezing fog lingered through the day for the temperatures in struggled to become much above freezing for the clearest quys much above freezing for the clearest guys working in from the north with further wintry showers. certainly another cold day ahead during thursday and thursday night heading into friday. another cold night. a sharp frost around do expect slippery surfaces with fresh snow lying in places and some icy conditions as well. heading into friday research at this week's weather making its way south across england and wales. but we will see that freezing fog lingering, temperatures are going to struggle to get above freezing. there will be some clear skies working from the north with further ‘wintry showers but certainly another cold day ahead during thursday and thursday night, heading into friday, another cold night.
10:27 pm
so, a sharp frost around and do expect some slippery surfaces with some fresh snow lying place and some icy conditions as well. heading into friday, we still got this weather front out this week for the front making its way southwards across england and wales so they could be for the snow almost anywhere to fairly low levels. we not expecting it to be too heavy but could be a bit significant for parts of the midlands and into wales and some fresh snowfall likely at times, fresh snow showers across parts of scotland and another cold day we'll all see in snow on friday and will be some sunshine as well. moving through the weekend, a subtle change as we start to see milder air here, at least in the northwest, so clouding over northern ireland and scotland some sunshine showers wintry over the high ground. england and wales on saturday sting largely dry and still cold so as to bring the chilly air mass and perhaps some icy stretches, three to 5 degrees for most of us. moving into the second half of the weekend, high pressure trying to build in from the west, bringing some slightly milder air. so, a bit of a change in one direction and is start to see more of an western northwesterly direction the sunday bringing in a fair amount of cloud, perhaps the best of the sunshine towards eastern areas but it will bring some frost and fog
10:28 pm
patches to linger in for quite a good part of the day. temperatures up a little bit compared to recent days, somewhere between four to 7 degrees with wet weather across the north of scotland all thanks to this front here. moving on into monday, we're going to see the influence of that front in the far north of the scotland, but elsewhere, largely dry. i think we are still in the relatively cool air. but things are starting to gradually change and it will take a few days before it starts to really warm up. but those winds are starting to come more of a westerly direction on monday. so, a little bit of dry weather with one or two showers for scotland, wintry of the high ground, but for most of us in sunny spells developing after a cold start in the afternoon around up to six or 7 degrees, through the course of next week, we are likely to see an area of low pressure bringing some wet weather over the first part of the week between monday 90 to and then, a ridge of high—pressure tries to build and towards the south so that should keep most of the unsettled weather and windy weather for the north of some dry conditions in the south, but which will notice to the course of next week, it will not be as cold and it will be turning milder. some unsettled breezy conditions in the north
