seen a president who has resisted conceding an electoral loss and we have not seen a mob with the intent of taking over the nations capital like this one did for a while. so, i think from a law enforcement perspective, a security perspective, they're going to have to go back and rewrite the plans that they have. understanding now that the capital building is secure, this is going to be the scene of the inauguration of president—electjoe biden. how does this impact affect the whole of democracy? how do you feel that this will infringe or taint democracy in the united states? i think you're sure that our democracy is resilient because i think the peoples business, the counting of the electoral votes as certified by each of the 50 states will be conducted and what i understand is that the

international editor, lyse doucet. what is the international reaction? president—electjoe biden said the world is watching that think they been watching for quite a while in disbelief, stunned with this on washington because it took a while before we started to see in social media, some of the first that i saw was from the secretary—general about an hourand a was from the secretary—general about an hour and a half ago and he used the word shocking to describe the scenes the united states. and call for the result of the democratic election to be respected. and some restraint reaction, the prime minister saying that he was concerned by the events in the united states and as the situation deteriorated on capitol hill, so did the language that became more and more stronger. we heard from the first minister of scotland, nicola

secretary. lisa nandy is the shadow foreign secretary. here in the uk. we have been hearing some of the international reaction. i know you have been commenting on it and just give us your initial reaction. we knew there was a prospect of civil u nrest knew there was a prospect of civil unrest considering how the election results were in folding and watching around the world, this is quite a shocking and stunning series of images being broadcast into our living rooms. we have seen one of the worlds great democracies descend into violence and asjoe biden put it, an unprecedented assault. what happens in the united states tends to have ripple effects around the world and so, this is one of the most serious things that we have seen for quite some time. how does the us come back from this? well, we

saw just after this began, the us come back from this? well, we sawjust after this began, we saw a level of leadership from president—electjoe biden that we have not seen the light for several yea rs have not seen the light for several years in the president trump appealing for calm, calling for the rights of the people to be respected in an orderly transition power. i thinkjoe biden gave us a glimpse of the america that people have come to respect and believe in and the america that the us can become again. but, this is a really serious moment of over the next couple of weeks. the world is in the middle of a big pandemic we need america to ta ke a big pandemic we need america to take a leadership role in that and ta ke take a leadership role in that and take a leadership role in that and take a leading role in helping us to come through this global crisis. not just that, but we are in the middle of incredibly strained global times. countries like russia and china will be watching with interest notjust

divisiveness in the sense of feeling to galvanise some of the people to rush the capital building, to perform the scenes we have seen through this evening? having spoken to senior democrats relatively recently, including incoming members of the biden administration, i think they are under no illusions about divisions that still exist in america. they have a legitimate election victory but the election also revealed a very divided country and those divisions were on display four years ago have undoubtedly worsened under the leadership of president trump. so there is a huge job to do and i don't think in any sense that the oncoming joe biden administration, we also see in the united kingdom and across the world, we've had an era in which populist leaders would play on those divisions and pick people against each other to sustain their grip on power. i think what we are seeing
