11:30 pm
this is bbc news with the latest headlines for viewers in the uk and around the world. supporters of president trump have broken into the us capitol building, during a march protesting against his election defeat. the chambers of both the senate and the house of representatives were placed into lockdown, and riot police were deployed. a group of people moved into the main building which was supposed to be the scene of the comfirmation ofjoe biden‘s election win. congressional officials have said the capitol building in washington is now secure. ealier in the day, the president told protestors the election had been stolen and he urged them to march on the capitol.
11:31 pm
once the violence unfolded though, he called for calm. the violence comes after the democrats appear to be have taken control of the us senate in run off elections in georgia. joe biden said voters had shown they wanted immediate action to address the crises facing america. hello and welcome if you're watching in the uk or around the world. supporters of donald trump have stormed into the capitol building. in response, donald trump has just tweeted.
11:32 pm
washington is now officially under curfew, and the capitol building itself has been secured. the national guard is being deployed to help restore order. and officials say the building is now secure. but while president—electjoe biden described events as insurrection and sedition — donald trump simply called on his supporters to remain peaceful and go home. all this came as congress was due to confirm joe biden‘s victory — something some republicans were trying to block — that process was forced to stop. and meanwhile in georgia, the democrats look set to win both senate seats — which would give their party control of the senate, the house of representatives, as well as the presidency. let's speak to congresswoman madeline dean who was on capitol

hill as this all unfolded. where are you now what is the situation where you were? we are still in a secure location, and we we re still in a secure location, and we were escorted off the floor not to the gallery and there a disturbance in the infiltration and very terrifying. did you describe a little more what happened while you we re little more what happened while you were in the gallery listening to proceedings and the security of capitol hill? yes, we are listening to the argument around the statement that republicans are contesting arizona and as i was preparing my or remarks to the preparation to the challenge to pennsylvania, the member pennsylvania. i have to say, i stood in the gallery with a couple of other members and just said what
11:34 pm
shame. these words are just shameful come these arguments are known to be false in they are shameful. there was a and an announcement would eve ryo ne was a and an announcement would everyone please take your seats, have them please take your seats. in the second announcement was prepared to find your way to the floor. either kneel or lie down on the floor if we call upon you to do that. and then the third announcement was interspersed with arguments with these false arguments of challenge was finally, which he finally reach into your seats and get out the gas masks, the building has been infiltrated and the rioters are as close as the rotunda and at that moment, tear gas at been disbursed according to the announcement, and they asked us to put our gas masks on and get secure. i chose to go behind to the gallery behind the front wall of the gallery and crouched down and encouraged a
11:35 pm
couple of friends to do the same. got a gas masks on and then they asked us to go across the gallery to be escorted. did you ever think that something like today whatever happened to you in the capital building? no. it seems incredible, even as it was going on, it seems unreal and one of the things that one of things we heard after getting these chaotic instructions, we heard banging on the very doors of the chamber and banging on the very doors of the chamberandi banging on the very doors of the chamberand i said banging on the very doors of the chamber and i said that's impossible. that must be security trying to secure something. but they had literally gotten to the doors and looked down at those famous doors for the president comes in the state of the union, for example. the door, and then were trying to hold the doors secure with their legs in the doors secure with their legs in the class was pierced. i had never everin the class was pierced. i had never ever in my wildest dreams would have
11:36 pm
thought that domestic terrorists, protest inspired by the madness and insanity of this president would actually come in and do harm to the capital and the people there. actually come in and do harm to the capital and the people therelj imagine it was quite frightening. capital and the people therelj imagine it was quite frighteningm really was. your instinct is to think that this cannot be happening and yet, sadly we have seen on the news that this is how these things begin to happen. how terrorists try to terrorise and to try to tear apart that which you think is sacred oi’ apart that which you think is sacred or special in this case and our precious capital. it was very terrifying it i immediately reached out and called the kids in my house. i'm glad your kids and husband know that you are safe. and we are hearing that the capital building is secure but you are still being held ina secure, secure but you are still being held in a secure, quite understandably, not going to disclose that to us.
11:37 pm
are you hearing anything from police oi’ are you hearing anything from police or security as to what is going to happen next? we have not gotten those instructions but their hope is to give us those instructions shortly, whether it is for us to return to our offices, the conflicts is very big —— complex. i i know that by our caucus chair, that we must go on with this constitutional duty to complete our confirmation of the electors. so, i'm assuming and believe working with our leadership and the police and other law enforcement involved as to how we can enforcement involved as to how we ca n safely enforcement involved as to how we can safely continue and it's a process that we must complete to secure the selection and then, move forward to addressing what went so horribly wrong here. there is going
11:38 pm
to be investigations with security, because it was not adequate. involved in the very important what should be entirely ceremonial process of confirming the election ofjoe biden is the next president ofjoe biden is the next president of the united states and there's been so much animosity in american politics and on capitol hill. perhaps what happened today, will that takes on the bitterness out of it? that the protesters of god too farand taking it? that the protesters of god too far and taking some wind out of their sales? -- gone too far. it's pertinent republican members who say that we all stand in this place together. is there reflection going on? that your words matter and if
11:39 pm
you tell people lives, and you tell them to act upon those lies, you are responsible for that. it is chilling and those who are accomplices to the president, they know it is a political stunt, they know they have no way of changing out this outcome, but the voters chose this president and so we hope there is reflection that comes from this. thank you very much for talking to us in describing what has happened to you and stay safe there. i am still bemused that we have to tell people to stay safe in their own congress building. a politics reporter for huffpost, who was inside the building when it was stormed and captured some remarkable images as protesters were first outside the building, right through to when they made their way through the rotunda.
11:40 pm
he's been moved to a secure location and can speak to us now. we knew that today was going to be tense in washington because we knew this protest was happening, but i cannot imagine that these are the pictures were going to be taking. this is going to be a largely ceremonial day, long day where you would see some republican members of congress object in the be some debate newbie all wrapped up by this evening and that turned out not to be the case. some of the footage that i took was right when some these protesters somehow made their way in the building and an confrontation with some these police officers, really shocking and surreal happenings today in the capital. we are watching some of the video now and police confronting
11:41 pm
these protesters were chasing where these protesters were chasing where the police officers who has a trenchant the stairs, but what was the atmosphere like, was it scary. it was definitely scary, i can feel for this police officer, i am frankly shocked that he did not draw his weapon as you can see in that video. giffords tried to use his baton to try to keep some these protesters back, but was able to do so ultimately and was chased up the stairs into outside the senate chamber itself, just steps away from the senate chamber we saw this confrontation is protesters carrying confederate flags and really awful imagery into the chamber, screaming justice and if we do not do justice, this will not be over. a couple of them actually gone to the senate chamber itself and into the senate chamber itself and into the senate chamber on the floor, on the day where vice president mike pence is
11:42 pm
presiding only minutes over a session, taking photos and saying donald trump should've one. it was incredible to see. what was the security like. it was fairly easy for the protesters to get inside. you were there. what is your assessment of the breakdown of security? i frankly think that they we re security? i frankly think that they were not prepared and they were overwhelmed. from inside the senate building, once the debate got under way, we could see protesters gathering in front of the capital and president trump is tweeted to make their way over and we can see them gathering over at the senate itself, but we assumed that the capital, they were doing theirjob it is the usually do, this is never happened before as far as i am aware, so it's reallyjust stunning, stunning. what was the reaction to
11:43 pm
you taking those photographs? thankfully, they seem to be ignoring me. one of them actually asked me for directions to the rest room. they asked me if i knew where the senators were but i declined to provide that information. i tried to stay in the background, stay behind police officers and to be unassuming, they made their way door to door saying, where the senators and calling them traitors and such. 0k. and calling them traitors and such. ok. thank you very much forjoining us. ok. thank you very much forjoining us. extraordinary pictures inside the capital today. before we go to our next guest, nancy pelosi has issued a statement saying that they are going to start again, the proceedings acidifying the votes to confirm joe biden as the next
11:44 pm
president of the united states and its construct this evening. democrats and republicans say they wa nt to democrats and republicans say they want to get on with the business of capitol hill and that this will not stop them from going through this process and it's going to be interesting to watch after this events interesting to watch after this eve nts fro m interesting to watch after this events from a political point of view, whether or not they raised objections to the certification of joe biden is the next president of the united states, or whether some of that is dissipated now in light of that is dissipated now in light of what is happened and pull people together more. joining me now is democratic strategist amanda renteria, and former advisor to president george w bush ron christie. you have spent a lot of time on capitol hill as has amanda and you watched what happened today. how do you explain how these people were allowed, effectively to breach security and entered this incredibly, sort of, wholly democratic place, the seat of
11:45 pm
american democracy, capitol hill? good evening to you, i cannot explain it. the only thing i can think back to his 1998 went to capitol hill police officers were shot by a deranged madman in the entire complex went into lockdown. my entire complex went into lockdown. my staff was petrified, they put the desk in front of the front door and so the notion that you have thousands of people who have descended upon the complex, were in the house chamber, or in the senate chamber, it is inexcusable, there will be an investigation and u nfortu nately, will be an investigation and unfortunately, i think hats are wonder role in the capitol hill police department because of this. at first and foremost, i am so thrilled that the members of the staff and thousands of people who work there or safe this evening. we had had reports can we do not understand the death of the one person. they were calling, donald trump was calling these people great
11:46 pm
patriots. how do we come together after this? how does the country come together if the president can't bring himself to distance himself from his supporters even to condemn what happened today? as she spoke with your last guest, i think this provides america for us to come together, but we were struck by a tragic event and came together not as republicans or democrats but as americans, we have this opportunity to once again. this president is unable or incapable of speaking out against this violence, but for those of us who cherish our democracy and love this country, we know that we are better than this and we will be better as a result of these terrible events that took place today. do you think this gives this country and the republican party a chance to move on from donald trump from what happened today? i think this makes ita happened today? i think this makes it a bit harder because i do not see donald trump going away. but his statement showed is that he intends
11:47 pm
to lead his supporters and with their destructive and exactly what he did today. he has not stopped it i think that is a dangerous place to be but the real test is in the senate or the house will now move forward and recognise that the only way we get through this in the next 15 days and beyond is for the hill, the folks are in this capital right now to get in basements or wherever they may be to come together and lead from the capital. which is very different, different tests but recognise that the white house of these for the next 15 days is not going to be there and in fact will harm efforts to unify. so, it is on the congress, on the senate to move forward. i have no doubt the republican leadership would very much like all of these challenges to joe biden certification to go away. they have said that in the past. what are you watching for. republican leadership in democratic leadership and from those who had
11:48 pm
opposed the certification ofjoe biden over the next few days to see if there can be some moving on from this moment? that is exactly what i'm watching for, what is ted cruz do, what does representative holly do, what does representative holly do and all those leaders that signed on to this, how did they react to this very moment? to the stand back and actually let him lead in the way they do strengthens morning? or did they do strengthens morning? or did they go directly to the people and say continue to march? we will see that in the coming days and certainly, everyone should understand that it doesn't seem like the white house will be coming around to follow the lead of what is happened in the capital. in that pa rt happened in the capital. in that part will be interesting because for many of us to follow donald trump, they're going to have to decide which way to go. ron, when you look at the republican leadership, do you see mitch mcconnell, who seems to have lost some control over some members of his party of the past few
11:49 pm
days, can he corral and give them, not just what happened days, can he corral and give them, notjust what happened today, but the republican losses in georgia, now the senate is going to be a republican control. as power shifted do you think i'm away from the more extreme wing of the republican party? has it shifted more towards the centre? i think it has, mitch mcconnell has been a master of playing the long game, being able to corral his members in the united states in it and frankly those in the united states house of representatives to bend his will. i think he feels emboldened tonight. he never would have been this publicly, but he once said the donald trump did not win in georgia, it did not prevail in this 2020 election cycle. this is been the most divisive election we seen since 1876, with this, he is going to try to come out of the ashes and try to re—emerge by republican centrism is all about and try to quell this,
11:50 pm
like senator holly and many others who are flying the donald trump banner and i think that should be assailed and mcconnell may be the one who rebuilds the party of the dates to come. it is been a very contentious for years is politics here in america in the last 48 hours have been dramatic and unprecedented. things have happened, power has shifted and things have moved very fast and it looks like donald trump presidency is going to end ina donald trump presidency is going to end in a tumultuous way, no different, more extreme even than the last four years. there is the capital building and it looks calm at the moment and security forces have moved in and we have seen riot police moving in there, clearing the protesters away from the capitol building, they have not entirely dispersed in the other is a curfew here in washington at the moment. but they have moved away and the capital building is secured and members are safe and they say they
11:51 pm
will resume their deliberations and lots of reactions notjust from here in america, but from around the world as well. we'll be back with the team in washington at the top of the team in washington at the top of the hour but none of spring you're the hour but none of spring you're the condemnation of these protests from around the world because they have been very, very clear. the german foreign minister, heiko maas said president trump and his supporters must accept the decision of the american people at last. he tweeted: the enemies of democracy will find out about these incredible images #washingtondc looking forward. insurgent words turn into violent acts — on the steps of the reichstag, and now in the capitol. the disdain for democratic institutions is devastating. canadian prime ministerjustin trudeau on has also expressed concern about the violent scenes in washington. speaking on a vancouver radio station, he said:
11:52 pm
"obviously we're concerned and we're following the situation minute by minute. i think the american democratic institutions arestrong, and hopefully everything will return to normal shortly." in the uk, the uk — the pm borisjohnson has tweeted: disgraceful scenes in us congress. the united states stands for democracy around the world and it is now vital that there should be a peaceful and orderly transfer of power. our chief international correspondent, lyse doucet explained more about the international reaction to the shocking scenes a little earlier i think they were watching for quite a while in disbelief, stunned at what they're seeing in washington because it took a while before we started seeing on social media one of the first we saw was the secretary general about and earned a half ago, use the word shocking to the scenes of the united states and
11:53 pm
called for the result of the democratic election to be respected. and then there were some strange reaction of the prime minister saying that he was concerned about the events in the united states but as the situation deteriorated on capitol hill, so too did the language, it became more and more stronger. we heard from the first minister of scotland, nicholas sturgeon that she was utterly horrified. borisjohnson, the british prime minister who took a little bit longer to respond describe the scene as shameful. it was interesting and the responses, there was his condemnation with increasingly strong language of what was happening. it also an affirmation of the strength of the american institutions, the european foreign policy, started his social media post by saying, this is not the america that we know. the

president of the commission about half an hour ago said that she still had belief in the strength of american institutions and also democracy. outlining some of the international reaction coming in. our specialist disinformation & social media reporter marianna spring explained the role that online conspiracy theories may have played in today's action. extreme groups have been radicalised by my conspiracies during and after the election have been making threats of violence for civil unrest. they have been circulating online and for those of been investigating on my disinformation, what happened today didn't necessarily come so much of a surprise. there's lots of evidence to suggest those that believe these conspiracies were present and have been present today. the qanon conspiracy, outside congress, they
