hello and welcome. a joint session of the us congress has reconvened after protestors stormed the capitol hill building earlier in the day. the process of counting of the electoral college votes, confirming joe biden as the next president, is expected to be completed soon. at least one senator, kelly loeffler of georgia, has rescinded her objection to the certification of presidential electors. she was one of two republicans at the centre of a dramatic night before, when her party lost two senate seats in georgia, and with it contro of the senate. on wednesday, hundreds of trump supporters stormed congress, breaking into the senate chamber and the office of the house speaker. one woman was shot as they

stormed the building and later died. three others died from medical emergencies. two pipe bombs were found. 52 arrests were made. all this after president trump addressed his supporters near the white house, repeating his claims that he'd won the presidency by a landslide, that the election had been stolen by fraud and telling them to march on capitol hill. twitter has now locked mr trump out of his account for twelve hours and threatened a permanent suspension. speaking as he reconvened the congressional session to certify america's november election result, the us vice—president mike pence condemned those who stormed the capitol building. today was a dark day in the history of the us capitol. but thanks to the swift efforts of us capitol police, the violence was quelled.

the capitol is secured and the people's work continues. we condemn the violence that took place here in the strongest possible terms. we grieve the loss of life in these hallowed halls. as well as the injuries suffered by those who defended our capitol today. and we will always be grateful to the men and women who stayed at their post to defend this historic place. to those who wreaked havoc in our capitol today, you did not win. violence never wins. freedom wins. and this is still the people's house. and as we reconvene in this chamber, the world will again

interesting, we had been, at the beginning of the day, expecting certain senators to join with members of the house of representatives and bring these objections, but certainly after the lawmakers came back, after the lawmakers came back, after the lawmakers came back, after the events of today, the violence that we've seen, there has been one woman who has died asa has been one woman who has died as a result of gunshot, a further three people died in the grounds of the capitol building, several members of the republican party speaking out saying it is just unacceptable, the scenes that we saw. so a number of senators, for example kelly leffler, who had been saying she was going to back objections in her state of georgia, had withdrawn their support for these objections, so it is quite a surprise to seejosh so it is quite a surprise to see josh hawley, so it is quite a surprise to seejosh hawley, senatorfor pennsylvania, decided he was still going to back members of the house of representatives in bringing this objection. the next stage of the process is they will discuss this, they will debate for another two

hours, they will then take a vote on whether the objections will stand. it's unlikely that the objections will stand. they will need to pass in both houses and it would take emma kratz in the lower chamber, the house of representatives saying no, joe biden didn't win in pennsylvania, which is unlikely to happen in the extreme. there isa to happen in the extreme. there is a heavy police presence where you are now. there is a cu rfew where you are now. there is a curfew in place. just describe the atmosphere now. the curfew has just been extended. the mayor of dc, muriel bowser, said she is extending itjust past the inauguration, that kinda goes to show the of concern she has about the situation here. there are lots of questions being asked about how people manage to overpower the police, we started out our day standing in front of the senate side of the capital that we we re senate side of the capital that we were outside. i can tell you, when the police tell you to move or don't stand here, you do what they say. so how

protesters and writers were really a ble protesters and writers were really able to overpower them and reach the perimeters of the capitol building is something that lots of people are asking about. the lawmaker that heads up about. the lawmaker that heads up the committee that funds the police that look after this area, capitol hill, saying there was clearly a lack of planning in terms of the security when it came to this building. i was going to say there will be huge discussion and analysis as to why this could also be happen, how this could also be happen, how this could happen in capitol hill with the security police overpowered. and the police encouraging protesters to do what they did. it's difficult to imagine how the respond to that. well, i think, interestingly, maybe the thing to do is look at members or look at what members of donald trump's own party have said. many of them saying he incited

a very bad mood. what will president trump do next, do you think? he is president until the 20th of. he is. president trump has proven himself to be very unpredictable —— 20 january. i do no this evening there is talk in the american media about indication of the 25th amendment of the us constitution, which contains a provision which allows a majority of the cabinet, with the vice president, to say that the vice president, to say that the president is unable to discharge his duties and be at least temporarily removed. the president's megaphone, which is twitter, has been taken from him and that's very concerning. i think right now he is a very unhappy person and he has certainly said and done things today, and over the last few weeks, which i suspect, once this is studied and investigated, many will

conclude helped lead to the horrible violent events of today. some have resigned from the trump administration, will others do that in the next few days? the debate, as they understand it, on the inside is is it better to stay there and try to contain risk and manage damage, or is it appropriate to leave. a number of white house officials, at least one high—profile, have resigned tonight. they know there has been talk of others resigning. i don't know what they will do. i think the focus right now is on making sure this peaceful transition of power, again, historically interrupted in a truly awful day that really, i can't impress enough, how dark and black a day this is for america. i think that the focus right now for many in government is on moving on this and ensuring there is a safe inauguration. and there is no

question there will be many investigations of the shortcomings that allowed for the insurrection, the domestic terrorists, the criminal element, whatever you want to call them, to make their way into the capitol and to make their way through the layers of security that should have been protecting the capitol. and i think what looking for during inauguration, which is already the highest category of security invent, something we would call in america a national security special event, so if there were an olympics, the un general assembly, a g8 meeting, things like that. it already receives the highest possible security treatment and is the product of months of planning that has started, it started months ago. we will see that security for this unusual virtual inauguration in these horrible covid times have even more stringent security. what that would look like for us, our

course, the other issues surrounding this extraordinary day and night in washington in the united states. stay with us on bbc news. hello there. there was some welcome sunshine in many areas on wednesday, but there's a definite wintry feel and look to the weather at the moment. not only do we have a widespread frost, but there will be some icy stretches around, and we have a spell of snow moving down from scotland and northern ireland ahead of that, some patches of freezing fog, as well. let's have a look at more detail then into the morning. and whilst there will be some patchy fog in the southeast of england, most of it will be through the midlands and towards merseyside. some icy patches in eastern england with those showers coming in off the north sea. and quite icy in scotland and northern ireland with that band of rain, sleet and snow moving down across the country, leaving a few centimetres of lying snow by the morning in many areas. now gradually that rain, sleet, and increasingly snow to high ground moves down into northern england. brightening up in scotland and northern ireland, more snow for

northern scotland. further south, most of that fog will tend to lift, although it could be quite great in a few places and feel particularly cold, some sunshine to come especially in wales and the southwest — another cold day wherever you are. and it will stay cold as we move into friday. the threat of more ice and also frost, as well, and maybe some more wintry showers coming into eastern scotland and northern england. a spell of light snow expected through the midlands and wales before that tends to peter out, also some damp weather in the southwest. but away from here, many places i think we'll see some sunshine. again, it's a cold day, temperatures struggling to 1—2 celsius, for example, in glasgow and also birmingham. now let's head into the weekend — slow changes to come, widespread frost on saturday morning, sunshine for england and wales, a cold day here, turning more cloudy for scotland and northern ireland, but a dampness around as well, especially in northern scotland as the breeze picks up. temperatures start to rise in the northwest of scotland, it stays cold elsewhere with temperatures at 3—4 celsius. we got a week weather front for northern areas, still around for the second

half of the weekend. high pressure starting to nudge in, and we are starting to change in the wind direction, picking up some milder air slowly but surely that'll come in from the atlantic. but that does mean the weather will turn more unsettled. we start to see the milder air coming in towards northwestern areas, wind picking up and rain moving in early next week, and eventually that milder air moves further south and also further east.
