well, looming above, those clouds turned to rain and play stopped with england 185 ahead. joe root*s 168 not out, and as these pictures reveal, when the captain's happy, the world smiles along, at least in that dressing room. joe wilson, bbc news. well, let's get some reaction from former middlesex captain, now cricketjournalist isabelle westbury. good to see you, hope you enjoy the cricket earlier on. let's start with joe root. had to face the questions before this series about how to turn 50s into centuries. he's done that, as he promised. how did he manage it? he came into the test speaking quite robustly about how he wanted to lead from the front. so i guess you could say he did not have much of an option. and hejust looked composed. he has recently turned 30. father of

new generation of england matters who don't look over coached. this is a moniker perhaps they suffered before and when it was all straight out of the coaching manual. but he sits really nicely alongside ali pope, sam curran, did not score the runs in this match but the future seems pretty bright for england. exciting to see some new names in there. sri lanka, batting was woeful. how has their bowling been, and is the test out of their reach? not quite as torrid as 135 not out in the bowling and they have the left on spinner getting three wickets. but really stringy. they could not get any strained pressure and he fell every time that one bowler bowled well and the batter would go after another one. bar the weather kind of intervening, it i think england 185 runs ahead were almost to be honest already enough. so a lot to do for sri lanka. they lost 2—0 against south africa and it

now, who is england's best ever player? it's one to debate with your pals on zoom this evening, and i'm sure wayne rooney would get a mention. england and manchester united's record goal—scorer has retired from playing today to take up the full—time position of manager at derby county. joe lynskey is here with more on what's been a remarkable career. i think on any other day this would be the lead story. definitely. he has given us so many memories through the years. after 18 years as a player, he become derby county's full—time manager today. but he goes to the dugout having made such an impact on the pitch. he arrived as england's fearless teenage striker at euro 2004,

scoring four times there, before going on to win the premier league with manchester united five times, as well as an fa cup and a champions league title. he left them with the ultimate personal accolade as their all—time record goal—scorer, surpassing the figure set by a united club icon, sir bobby charlton. that figure was 253 goals from more than 500 appearances. he also became england's record goal—scorer, with 53 goals from 120 caps. 0nly peter shilton appeared more times for his country. he broke that england goals record in 2015, but he never won the major titles he got with united for his country. instead, from 2017, his career drifted back to his boyhood club and then to the united states with dc united and as derby's player—coach from january.

6:52 pm
who've had mixed success so far. rooney said today he's spoken to steven gerrard, who may well be on the way to a breakthrough scottish premiership title with rangers this season. frank lampard is fighting to keep the chelsea job, phil and gary neville have both had their own spells had their own spells in management now, whilejohn terry and ledley king could join their former team—mates as bosses as they look to progress from coaching roles. rooney's also worked under some of the world's best managers, so how does one of them, david moyes, who gave rooney his debut, think he'll get on? if he has chosen to stop playing, i'm if he has chosen to stop playing, l'm sure — if he has chosen to stop playing, l'm sure it'll— if he has chosen to stop playing, i'm sure it'll be _ if he has chosen to stop playing, i'm sure it'll be for— if he has chosen to stop playing, i'm sure it'll be for the _ if he has chosen to stop playing, i'm sure it'll be for the right- i'm sure it'll be for the right reason _ i'm sure it'll be for the right reason because _ i'm sure it'll be for the right reason because he - i'm sure it'll be for the right reason because he wants i i'm sure it'll be for the right| reason because he wants his i'm sure it'll be for the right- reason because he wants his future to he _ reason because he wants his future to he in_ reason because he wants his future to be in management. _ reason because he wants his future to be in management. and - reason because he wants his future to be in management. and he - reason because he wants his future to be in management. and he is i reason because he wants his future i to be in management. and he is going to be in management. and he is going to be in management. and he is going to he in— to be in management. and he is going to he in a _ to be in management. and he is going to be in a different _ to be in management. and he is going to be in a different world _ to be in a different world

want and enjoy your friday night. that is all from us. bye—bye. hello. more rain and snow in the forecast overnight, and some of that snow is likely to be disruptive. it's rain we see initially, piling in from the west. as it bumps into the cold air, that's going to mean further snow across scotland and northern england. then, as the night wears on, seeing some snow developing through parts of the east midlands, but also through east anglia and then into south east england. where we've got the rain, it's falling onto saturated ground, so we have a number of flood warnings in place. also ice warnings ahead of that band of rain as temperatures fall below freezing, but temperatures actually starting to rise as the night wears on. but we have an amber warning for the snow across east anglia from 5am tomorrow morning through until 2pm in the afternoon. we could see 5—10 centimetres in places. some disruption is very likely. so, snow through the morning through parts of scotland, northern england, east anglia and south east england.
6:58 pm
that was slowly clear away south and eastwards. behind it, we've got some sunshine, but also further showers pushing into scotland, northern england and for a time across northern ireland. but for most, it won't be as cold a day tomorrow. goodbye.
