i remember the day before the interview came out i had panic attack. and i was like, i did not think this through, what if i'm giving up all of my sponsorship opportunities? what if i'm never going to come and you know, get any sport contracts because now everybody knows i'm gay? that momentum carried me, that decision. the success i was having on the ice lent itself to me feeling comfortable to be able to talk about that, my personal life. i had a mini freak out before and then the article came out and right away my phone started ringing, it was all positive. i got so many messages online from people around the world. right after i get the first when i thought it was worth it. totally

worth it to come out. if you look it's like this for everybody can when you reveal something about yourself and you have a secret you feel lighter. it was like someone had taken these invisible bricks of my shoulders. and when it came to expressing myself and even expressing myself and even expressing myself and even expressing myself with meghan i felt even more free than i did before. i think standing on top of the podium is going to be one of the highlights of my life. i did not realise i was the first openly gay athlete to get a gold medal until after. like going and i was not thinking this is the possibility to make history, i opened up my twitter and saw that and i was like! itjust made me explode with pride. it was just so cool and very unexpected. i thought
6:56 pm
that if i came out it would, my story would just be lost in that wave, in that deluge of other stories that i did not think it would be the most effective time, and i very much wanted a fertile epic story to be about my athletic story and everything i've had to overcome just to get there. i did not want to be about my sexuality which in a way has nothing to do with my sporting ability anyway. when people ask me what the, you know, how was russia compared to pyeongchang there such a different air, and different air in the air. i remember still feeling that

controlling of myself. because i was not completely out and i was not as comfortable with myself, and ijust felt like i did not care. i could be myself 100%. and with adam and with gus it felt like there was a change, there was a shift happening in athletes sexuality, those were big stories and dishes more commonplace. a kind of see this all going. which of the time when athletes feel comfortable you still need athletes to break through that barrier and push that barrier along. so that there's more space for everybody to feel comfortable. much more on the bbc sport website, just one premier league game to bring you up—to—date with,.
