joe wilson, bbc news. time for a look at the weather. here's tomas schafernaker. good evening. the weather is fairly quiet out there at the moment and thatis quiet out there at the moment and that is how it's going to stay over the next few days. for most of us fairly chilly. having said that, today in scotland it was the warmest day of the year so far in edinburgh with temperatures reaching 19 celsius. thanks to this high pressure which sent the clouds from the north, they went over the mountains, they dry out and we had sunshine across the lowlands, whereas the vast majority of the rest of the country were underneath the cloud. there has been some rain around too, that will continue this evening and overnight, particularly across eastern areas, quite damp

here, whereas in central and western scotland there will be clearer skies tonight so a little bit colder in the morning, around three degrees. so start off fairly overcast for the majority of the uk tomorrow, but the thinking is that as we go into the afternoon the skies will clear after afternoon the skies will clear after a damp start in east anglia and the south—east, so there will be some sunshine for places like norwich, london, possibly southampton too, and also it may be 15 in glasgow. but for many of us it will remain fairly cloudy. saturday is the spring equinox, so the first day of astronomical spring. spring equinox, so the first day of astronomicalspring. high spring equinox, so the first day of astronomical spring. high pressure still very close by and that will hang around for quite a while. if you look at the outlook into next week, not a lot of change at all. fairly cloudy with that high pressure and temperature is around 11 to 13 degrees for most of us. thank you very much. that's all from the bbc news at six, so it's goodbye from me, and on bbc one, we nowjoin

there is a lot more reaction to that on the bbc sport website. the way from the cricket, the winds keep coming at cheltenham. for rachael blackmore. the trailblazing jockey had double success today, on day three of the festival. her fourth grade one win of the week came on board alla—ho in the ryanair chase. and the 31—year—old irish rider won won again in the mares* novices hurdle. nick parrott reports. all overwhelming and unbelievable it was how rachel blackmore described her continuing success. she had already made history by becoming the first woman to win the champion hurdle. but st patrick's day wasn't enjoyable for the irish woman come as she fell three times. today blackmore came back in style, she dominated the ryan air chase, taking the lead after the third jump. pulling away from her rivals of two to go, and coming home 12 lengths ahead of the rest of the field.

is tomorrow morning, where these eight teams will find out their potential route to a final in istanbul. but after last night chelsea's manager says they're the team the rest want to avoid. that's after they were so convincing in beating atletico 2—0 at stamford bridge, 3—0 over the two legs. hakim ziyech and emerson got the goals for chelsea against a side who not only beat liverpool at this stage of the competition last season, but who are also currently top of the spanish league. that shows just how good chelsea were over these two legs, and reflects their improvement, particularly in defence, since they sacked frank lampard and appointed thomas tuchel. in 13 games they've kept 11 clean sheets and still haven't lost a match in any competition. this is the furthest chelsea have been in the champions league in seven years. they may be the outsiders historically — but their coach is confident.

fixes like this in results like this give you the certain edge in the certain clue to achieve a special thing. you can only do this with a special atmosphere right now we are in the draw. and we are pretty sure nobody wants to play against us. no need to be afraid. we take what we get it and we will prepare the best way possible. manchester city in the hat — and really interesting those quotes from pep guradiola on tuesday saying, "the first year i arrived here i was told we had to win the champions league," quite an omission when they try to take the pressure away from them in terms of winning that. that's quite a statement. they've been looking to win it since they first qualified for the modern version of the tournament ten years ago. their record though is so disappointing. the best they've done is reach the semi—finals in 2016

in what manuel pellegrini knew was his last season as manager. since pep guardiola's come in they've not gone past the last eight, losing to liverpool, spurs and that big shock against lyon after the lockdown last summer. city though are 1a points clear at the top of the premier league and are undoubtedly a side no one else wants to play. well domestically liverpool are in a much trickier spell, struggling just to qualify for this tournament for next season, and jurgen klopp says... there aren't really any weak links in this draw — we've seen porto knockjuventus out with ten men and psg beat barcelona. and there'll always be the threat from the defending

champions bayern munich, and their striker robert lewandowski who england will face in a world cup qualifier against poland next month. sarah — he has 32 goals from 2a bundesliga games this season — that's 13 more than anyone else in that league. and he is by some distance the most prolific player in europe right now. really the force behind bayern munich as of late. interesting article on him on the bbc sport website as to who they were still continue to compete whenever he is gone. thank you, joe. gareth southgate has recalled jesse lingard, luke shaw and john stones to his squad for 2022 world cup qualifiers later this month. aston villa striker ollie watkins and west brom keeper sam johnstone have also been called up for the first time. england play san marino at home on 25 march, are away in albania on 28 march and then host poland on 31 march.

well the england manager was also asked about the sheldon report into historical sexual abuse released yesterday that strongly criticised the fa over significant instiutional failings that left some children unsafe. everybody has got to reflect on a period of history where things were different and were done differently and not what the level of care that every child that play sport desires. so i think there is recognition of errors that have been made in the past, which is important to acknowledge, and i think we are in a different place now but we must never be complacent about that area because unfortunately events or activities that involve children sometimes attract the wrong sort of people and we have to make sure that not only are game but society is safe for young people.

well following that review, a support organisation set up by survivors of childhood sexual abuse in football has asked the cabinet office to strip dario gradi of his mbe. the review found that the former crewe manager "should have done more" to investigate concerns about paedophile barry bennell when he worked at the club as a youth coach, but that he was not involved in a cover—up. let's take a quick look at some other stories making the news. wimbledon is likely to go ahead this summer with reduced crowds. it's due to start a week after covid restrictions are set to end. there won't be any scenes like this, because there'll be no ticket resales within the grounds. all tickets will be sold on—line, although there's no word on how many will be available. another member of the tokyo olympics organising team has resigned after making derogatory comments about women. creative director, hiroshi sasaki, suggested
