the warmest day of the year so far and they are set to rise again tomorrow. it is attributed to this area of high pressure, across most of the country. this weather front is plaguing the north—west of scotland, bringing some very heavy and persistent rainfall here this evening and overnight, there is a continued risk of localised flooding. generally more cloud across northern areas, windy in the north, clearer skies in the south, chile in the south by the end of the night, a bit of mist and fog to greet us first thing tomorrow but that will clear very quickly. in england and wales, another dry, sunny day and as temperatures soar into the afternoon, again a bit more cloud over the north, perhaps northern ireland, southern and eastern scotland, away from the north—west that will be very wet continually. it will be a mild day wherever you are but very warm in central and eastern england, 22 a 23 celsius. on wednesday subtle changes, the weather front begins to sink southwards, a pretty wet day for scotland and northern ireland, some of the rain turning wintry over the higher ground as cold northerly winds dig in. in england and wales

after a cool start, another very warm one, the low 20s celsius, cold air making inroads across the northern half of scotland. unfortunately the cold air wins out towards the end of the week. it will be colder for all areas with overnight frost returning and it will stay cold as well as we head on into the easter week. but with high pressure largely dominating for the end of the week, although it will turn colder, particularly by friday it will stay largely dry with some spells of sunshine.— spells of sunshine. that is something. _ that's all from the bbc news at six —

and after breaking covid protocols, three wales players are thrown out of the squad. also coming up in the programme. a moving documentary about the world cup winnerjack charlton and in ireland manager is aired tonight. good evening, an important milestone has been reached on the path out of lockdown in england, we've seen golfers queueing up at the first tee, outdoor tennis courts in full swing, swimmers have been diving into those outdoor pools and many other organised sports have resumed. we've been here before of course and the government is still urging caution, but for now thousands have jumped at the chance to get back into their chosen sports. here's our correspondent andy swiss.

on the stroke of midnight it was back. and whether it was a spot of nocturnal golf or a moonlight cycle ride in derbyshire, they clearly couldn't wait. after months of lockdown, outdoor sport in england is finally up and running. this morning, the country was a hive of activity. in manchester, this walking football team hasn't been able to play since november, but after so long away, at last. it's amazing. it's brilliant because just boredom and just to get out and have the company, the exercise as well, it's really good for everybody. we are chatting on whatsapp all the time, we were on countdown, two weeks to go, one week to go, we stayed in contact which is a good thing for everybody*s wellbeing. and while it might still be march, at hillingdon lido they couldn't wait to take the plunge. i'm so excited about being here, i'm going back in again so see you in the pool.
6:35 pm
people have really, really missed it. it's so important for all—round health, both mentally and physically. with indoor pools staying shut actually being able to swim is still easier said than done. we can't lose sight of the fact we only have around 110 publicly accessible outdoor pools in this country and there is a massive north—south divide. there are only five lidos in the north of england. there's still a long way to go before we can get everybody back swimming. whatever your sport for the last year it's been challenging to say the least. while there is relief at finally being able to play again, there is concern about the damage that's been done. sadly, i think it's going to take a terrible toll on the nation's mental health and physical health, that's why it's so important people can get out again, can participate in grassroots sport, they seize the opportunity and it's all about forming a habit, so we've got out of the habit over the course of the winter and we are really soon going to be able to get out there, the weather is good, enjoy it.
6:36 pm
the hope is that indoor facilities like gymnasiums can open in england next month, but for now enjoying sport in the great outdoors is the only goal. andy swiss, bbc news. so england getting sporty again, you'll know that if you live in wales, scotland or northern ireland, there have been a few variations of those restrictions, but everything is moving in the right direction now, let's get more on this now and speak to greg whyte. a professor in applied sport and exercise science and former modern pentathlete evening greg, great to see people getting back out you are well qualified to talk about this. as we heard from that report, some people will not be motivated. they will have lost the enthusiasm, what damage do you think might have been done over the last 12 months? what we do know is there has been a huge damage of the past 12 months, we've actually seen a fall in

activity levels across the population. despite prior to the first lockdown there was an increasing amount of physical activity and i think during the first lockdown we were helped by good weather and long days. creating all sorts of problems during lockdown three, short days, poor weather. we are starting to see is a real decline in physical activity across the entire population. for a small percentage _ across the entire population. for a small percentage support - across the entire population. for a small percentage support is - across the entire population. for a small percentage support is more thanjust an exercise. small percentage support is more than just an exercise. getting out there. those who can potentially make careers out of their talents, we are talking future olympians and world champions. are we going to see a dip in talent in years to come? is this going to be a lost generation of sports stars we are seeing? i really think there could be. what matters is what we do now. sometimes what we do is conflate it and on rumour what's just happened but what we see is 12 months of no or disrupted training for the last

future olympians and future athletes. particularly in these formal years. an indoor training is not available until april 12 and senior athletes for later in may. there's no doubt about it is the loss of training and significant disruption is going to have a significant impact in the sweet action now to ensure that both athletes can reclaim that lost time. you had the year of the various government advisory groups of the last 12 months. you've been at odds i think of this blanket ban across various sports and outdoor ones. what could be done to make up for lost time if anything? i what could be done to make up for lost time if anything?— what could be done to make up for lost time if anything? i worked very closely with — lost time if anything? i worked very closely with number _ lost time if anything? i worked very closely with number ten _ lost time if anything? i worked very closely with number ten through i lost time if anything? i worked very| closely with number ten through uk active and creating a covid safe environment. and it's really

important, what you do have to remember is that the leisure and fitness sector is instrumental in not only physical activity of the nation but also the support of the nation. many of these facilities are what children use and what kids today use the facilities and the general public use. they are not elite centres and with that close kids can't access them. i think that what we have to think about is the damage that lockdown has done financially. it sits currently on the precipice of disaster. we have to think very carefully, in order to ensure that those facilities are still there for the kids is to move forward, for everybody. if you think about how we can keep them open and identify them as this essential service. and give them a break so that they can financially survive to ensure that those facilities are there to make sure that our future olympians are in place.— there to make sure that our future olympians are in place. many thanks indeed forjoining _ olympians are in place. many thanks indeed forjoining us _ olympians are in place. many thanks indeed forjoining us this _ olympians are in place. many thanks indeed forjoining us this evening. i this current international break in football, has seen the start of world cup qualifying
