barricade. before you head towards the capitol. in terms of public access to this building, how important has it been for the americans to always have access and why this is such a desirable target for people who want that attention? so, the fencing around the capitol has been distressing to many americans. it's been proposed after the insurrection of the capitol there should be premiered fencing around the us capitol, and this is opposed by some congressmen and senators on both sides. bipartisan opposition to locking up the capitol permanently. what we see on the screen is this layer of fencing which would lock out and keep out most traffic, most people coming in unless you had a badge, and the barricade is the next level of that. this individual graced the outer fencing and deliberately drove into the barricade, where the officers were. that's why it's concerning. in ordinary times, this outside fencing

the failings of security around the capitol. there's been a proposal to put permanent fencing around the us capitol, opposed by both republicans and democrats because they feel it would lock out americans from their democracy. these are all things that have happened since january the 6th, and this incident which has transfixed the nation, we have a lot of people worried about how it will happen. of people worried about how it will ha en. ~ * , , of people worried about how it will ha 0 en, . * , , ., happen. we're 'ust getting news that we should happen. we're just getting news that we should have _ happen. we're just getting news that we should have a _ happen. we're just getting news that we should have a capitol— happen. we're just getting news that we should have a capitol police - we should have a capitol police briefing in around 20 minutes' time, so we're going to keep an eye out for that. we haven't so far had a response from the white house itself, but certainly, leader mcconnell has responded and has said that he's praying for the united states capitol police officers who were attacked. that was the two officers taken to hospital. we're still learning what's taking place.

lockdown. nothing compared to what happened on january the 6th, lockdown. nothing compared to what happened onjanuary the 6th, because there are hundreds of people from all angles coming into the us capitol. they got inside the actual floor of the us senate, where just moments ago, the vice president mike pence and a sitting of congress was at the election ofjoe biden at the time, and the vice president we have since seen footage of him being removed from inside that senate and briefly missing some of the insurrectionists, if you want to call them that. and we saw at least one senator, mitt romney, who was headed in the direction of the people who were attacking the capitol and was quickly diverted by capitol and was quickly diverted by capitol police officers. it was just in time before he came into direct contact. this bring back memories of that day, the day american democracy was attacked. one individual who we do not know a lot about. but we do

7:52 pm
exited his vehicle. it was a blue saloon, he exited the vehicle with a knife. we understand he did not appear to wrestle with the police officers around that barricade area but he was then fired upon and his death was later confirmed in hospital. our correspondence is in washington and you can see just behind the capital building. just remind us a bit more of what we have just been told. aside from what you just been told. aside from what you just said, the officers were asked about this man in particular, was he known it to the security forces, was he targeting anybody in particular perhaps they basically said no in answer to that question, he did not appear on any list so they could not
7:53 pm
say whether he was targeting somebody in particular. they said that this is not being called a terrorist attack at this point. they also said he was not an ongoing threat or it did not appear to be. they are still investigating and trying to understand his motivation and that he said they news about the officer who has succumbed to injuries who has died, the acting head of the capital police really frames that in terms of the difficulties the forces had. the pace that capital insurrection on january six and one of the officers was killed and now the situation and repeatedly said remember them and theirfamilies and remember our their families and remember our officers theirfamilies and remember our officers and families because this is a very difficult time and of course it's a limited incidents and it's one man who tried to —— you

crashed into a barrier and and according to the officers here got out of the car and lunged at the officer has a knife but it was one man and one attack as opposed to the insurrection or the riots a couple of months ago but stare at the camp itself was really on edge and the security around showed that to be the case. even with the security of these kinds of things happening which is another question that the officers were asked. the underlying the point that this is just the preliminary stages of the investigation. i wonder if you picked up how many security bodies will be involved in the investigation like this? we know the national guard was there. we just heard from the capital police and the metropolitan police. who is likely to be involved in the investigation of the incident? the investigation of the incident? tie: metropolitan police
7:55 pm
investigation of the incident? ti9 metropolitan police yes, as you said, the fbi also responded initially to help out after the incident took place and presumed be investigating as well. the national guard as i an emergency response units because of the incidentals that it seems unlikely they will be taking part in the investigation by the fbi and the metropolitan police department will be looking into it. you are outside the capitol and i can see members of the press behind you. what are people saying, what is the atmosphere like? this is coming so soon afterjanuary six. what is the feeling?— the feeling? there is only media here i the feeling? there is only media here i have _ the feeling? there is only media here i have to _ the feeling? there is only media here i have to say. _ the feeling? there is only media here i have to say. this - the feeling? there is only media here i have to say. this area - the feeling? there is only media here i have to say. this area is l here i have to say. this area is difficult to get to because of the security barriers. so the media can get here but the general public cannot. congress buildings are empty because congress is in recess so

there weren't that many lawmakers around. some of the staff are in the buildings and they were giving a security alert and told that they had to stay in position and stay away from the windows and the doors and their president has also left the capital. he has gone to camp david for the weekend so there aren't many people around in terms of their sites. but i think what he choseis of their sites. but i think what he chose is that the capital building is there a target. there had been a lot of warnings about possible attempts for another attack by extremists, right—wing extremists, perhaps the parties of president trump. he did not know who this man was and we do not know what his motivation was or what his condition was but at the very least what this shows is that that capital here is still seen as a target.— still seen as a target. have we heard anything _ still seen as a target. have we heard anything from _ still seen as a target. have we heard anything from the - still seen as a target. have we heard anything from the white still seen as a target. have we - heard anything from the white house? is there an official statement that you are aware of? i is there an official statement that you are aware of?— is there an official statement that

was like an armed camp. i should say in the last few weeks they began to take away some of the outer perimeter of the fencing began to be removed because it was deemed the threats had decreased. we don't know what would happen now as a result of the incident today. but that is something that i started —— i started to happen in the weeks prior to this. : , .. :, started to happen in the weeks prior to this. : , :, :, :, to this. any indication how long this knock— to this. any indication how long this knock that _ to this. any indication how long this knock that last? _ to this. any indication how long this knock that last? have - to this. any indication how long this knock that last? have you | to this. any indication how long - this knock that last? have you heard anything from security? thea;r this knock that last? have you heard anything from security?— anything from security? they have not said how _ anything from security? they have not said how long _ anything from security? they have not said how long it's _ anything from security? they have not said how long it's going - anything from security? they have not said how long it's going to - not said how long it's going to last. but all of this people who were involved, the attacker and the two police officers have been removed from the scene and the metropolitan police chief said they did not deem it to be an ongoing threat. so, presumably it would be lifted in the next hours.—

shot. he has died but two of the officers that were also injured of those, one has died. this is bbc news. i'm lukwesa burak with the headlines. one police office was killed after a car rammed the sercurity barricade at the us capitol — another officer is being treated at hospital. the suspect emerged from the car with knife and ran at officers — police say he is now deceased. the suspect did to start lunging towards us capitol police officers, at which time us capitol police officers fired upon the suspect. the us national guard has been deployed in the area — the us capitol was put on lockdown.
