the first is this very strongly worded headline from one of the country's biggest daiy newspapers. the asahi shimbun published this editorial today explicitly telling the prime minister ofjapan to call off the games. they say... they also say in a poll they've conducted only 14% of japanese people want the olympics to go ahead, and they also question the sporting integrity of the games with the disruption of so many qualifying and preparation events this year. well the japanese public opinion is one concern for the organisers,

another now has come from a team of scientists and athletes who've put together the rings of fire report published yesterday, looking into how heat could affect the tokyo games. they say the japanese capital is one of the cities most affected by climate change, with a rise in temperature of nearly three degrees in the last century. that*s led to heatwaves in the last three years, of which one in 2019 caused 5,000 people to go to hospital injust one week. the heatwave in 2018 saw so many people suffer that it was classified a natural disaster. this report's been put together by researchers from around the world, including here in britain, who looked at how the heat will affect the athletes. be fairly confident to say that performances will be impaired across a lot of sports. as we deal with warmer climates and have the increased likelihood of heat waves, then the sport as a spectacle will be impacted. these guys will push

themselves to the point where they will collapse and the likelihood of that happening is much higher in the kind of conditions we are talking about in tokyo. well one event specifically referred to in the rings of fire report is the marathon at the world athletics championships in doha two years ago. you might remember it started at midnight to avoid the hottest parts of the day, but even then, in the women's race 28 out of the 68 who started couldn't finish it because of the extreme conditions. the tokyo marathon has been moved away from the capital to sapporo in the north, where it's much cooler, but still athletes and former athletes across events are concerned. in the hall, i believe it was 32 32.7 degrees come i think once you get to sa, 35 and beyond, you get into territory where you will see a lot more serious heat impacts. it is

0rganisers there nor the only ones facing a challenge at the moment, giro d'italia leader egan bernal is still in the leader's pink jersey, but for the first time in the race he's lost time to one of his rivals in the top five. a resurgent simon yates left bernal trailing by almost a minute moving up from fifth to third. drew savage reports on stage 17, won by ireland's dan martin. a change in the weather in the italian alps and the first of three mountain stages to test them he looked pretty secure in pink with an overall lead in more than two minutes. but there may yet be a twist in the plot. stage 17 provided two separate spectacles. first, a breakaway, from riders who were no threat to bernal or the overall leaders. ireland's dan martin squeezed out the competition and rode away for an impressive stage win — he's now taken grand tour victories in france, spain and italy. behind him, britian*s simon yates, who'd slipped to fifth place, forced the pace on the final climb. and we saw something that hadn't happened on the first 16 stages — egan bernal struggling to keep up and losing time. hugh carthy, too —

the englishman dropped from third overall to fifth. yates was the big winner on the day, gaining almost a minute on bernal and third place with it. still three minutes 23 seconds behind the colombian, who's two minutes 21 ahead of damiano caruso. but maybe, just maybe, there's something still to race for. a lot can happen. surrey wicketkeeper ben foakes has been ruled out of england's upcomming test series with new zeland, after tearing his hamstring. he was set to make his home test debut but now looks like he'll be out for three months. it means that gloucestershire wicketkeeper james bracey is now set to make his england debut in place of foakes. nottinghamshire batsman haseeb hameed has been brought back into the squad, as cover, for the first time since 2016. wicketkeeper batsman sam billings of kent, who's an established member of the white ball side, has also been called up.
