and clear and quite warm. cooler and cloudier and wetter weather on the way for the south west of england, showers could be heavy and sundry for a time, working westwards into wales, even the london area as well. more low cloud pegging the temperature back around the north sea coast but ahead of the developing storm is the highest temperatures from north west england down through the midlands. these areas will see showers probably by the evening and overnight with the weather front continuing to push them northwards. becoming fewer and lighter by thursday with showers clearing away from northern england and to scotland. for many parts of wales and northern ireland, after a fairly cloudy will brighten up with more in the way of sunshine. the temperature not as high on thursday, and by the end of the day, maybe some more showers are arriving across southern england, some could

contain the thunder as they develop in the midlands heading north into eastern england and eastern most parts of scotland first thing on friday. those should move through on the day, sunshine follows but out west a bit more cloud than the breeze picking up. the temperature not quite so high, 17—23, near normalfor not quite so high, 17—23, near normal for this not quite so high, 17—23, near normalfor this time of not quite so high, 17—23, near normal for this time of year. that's all from the bbc news at six, so it's goodbye from me, and on bbc one we nowjoin the bbc*s news teams where you are.

hello and welcome to sportsday. i'm chetan pathak, coming up on tonight's programme... gareth southgate names his 26 man england squad for euro 2020, as liverpool right—back trent alexander—arnold survives the cut. as naomi osaka pulls out of the french open to protect her mental health, we ask what it means for her and for tennis.
6:34 pm
and we hear from james anderson, as he targets another record ahead of england's first test against new zealand which starts at lord's tomorrow. welcome along, thanks forjoining us. it's ten days until the start of euro 2020. tonight, gareth southgate has named his 26—man england squad. seven players have been cut from the provisional list. there are four right backs, including trent alexander arnold who was dropped earlier this year. our reporter ben croucherjoins me now. you croucherjoins me now. could not leave trent alexander—arnold you could not leave trent alexander—arnold out after the way he finished the season at liverpool.

6:36 pm
jesse lingard and ollie watkins the other names to mess out. in the last few minutes, the england manager said bukayo saka played with character and skill in a very difficult situation for arsenal this season, not performing at their best but his versatility is probably going to be crucial for southgate because he can play out wide in front line but left—back if needed with luke shaw and ben chilwell included in the squad. lots of different combinations you can go wet and a very young and exciting squad. always hard for the players that miss out. we heard mason greenwood withdrew through injury earlier, but there are other frustrated players tonight. who do you think is most disappointed? jesse lingard, the west ham united, on loan from manchester united, he is probably going to be the most disappointed not to be included. he was in fine form at the world cup as we have seen in the world cup back in 2018, in fine form for west ham
6:37 pm
since he went on loan. he will probably feel most aggrieved. interestingly, because of the players involved in european finals for manchester united, manchester city and chelsea over the last week, he is going to start in england's friendly against austria tomorrow evening. seems backwards but it's just the way southgate has been able to get all the players together. ollie watkins had a fine season for aston villa but probably with calvert—lewin and harry kane to similar, james ward—prowse was probably a good set piece option to come off the bench and maybe change again, but southgate feeling with the midfield he has got, jordan henderson and kalvin phillips, look set to be fit from their injuries he doesn't have space for her. always interesting — doesn't have space for her. always interesting on _ doesn't have space for her. always interesting on the _ doesn't have space for her. always interesting on the comment - doesn't have space for her. always| interesting on the comment section of the bbc sport website. jordan henderson and harry maguire questioned in particular, not played a lot of football recently but does southgate think we need experience in the team? if southgate think we need experience in the team?—

and hope they can achieve the exciting opportunities they have in front of them. he says whilst i have enjoyed being at everton i have been provided with an opportunity i believe is the right move for me and my family at this time. everton finished tenth in the premier league, may be underachieving but angela lottie brings that stardust and he has mabel to attract james rodriguez to the club, maybe has not achieved what he wanted to but replacing zinedine zidane who left the club this time last week, it's an opportunity at this stage that he feels he could not turn down. won the champions league with them in 2014 and an exciting move. three—year deal we understand. exciting for him, frustrating for everton fans. next to scotland. like england, they have a couple of friendlies to play before the euros, but their preparations for the tournament have

been disrupted after midfielderjohn fleck tested positive for covid—19 at their training base in alicante. the 29—year—old's now self—isolating and won't travel for wednesday's friendly against the netherlands in portugal. i've been speaking to our scottish football correspondent chris maclaughlin. not a lot at the moment, details a bit sketchy, what we know is that john fleck returned a positive test yesterday. the players since arriving in southern spain have been tested daily, clearly this is disruptive in as much as he is going to miss the next couple of friendly games for scotland, but we also know this has the potential to be to hugely disruptive now, the other squad members have since tested negative. as i say, they are being tested daily but we know deuterium can patiently of this virus that that doesn't mean that in much of the moment. so the scotland backroom team, steve clarke keeping their fingers crossed this is not something that's going to be a

problem throughout their squad, taking all necessary precautions, to make sure that no other players are infected. they say at this stage there are no close contacts identified, but they will look at players who have been closest to john fleck and perhaps take some precautions in that sense. but we always knew that this was going to be potentially an issue for these games. given where we are globally with this virus, so it should not really come as too big of a shock but for scotland, for steve clarke, for everyone associated with the national team here, the absolute keeping their fingers crossed no more positive cases are identified. i should also point out thatjohn fleck is not showing any symptoms. more cricket in a moment but first to the french open where players

have been reacting to naomi osaka's decision to pull out. the 23—year—old says she's "suffered long bouts of depression" since winning her first grand slam title in 2018. following days of debate after she said she wouldn't do press conferences to protect her mental health... she's now taken the decision to leave, saying she never wanted to be a distraction. well, the latest reaction this afternoon has come in from the grand slam board, who oversee all the majors. interesting to see that statement compared to the first one from the grand slams which some said was too severe. tennis players have been giving their reaction to osaka's withdrawal across the last 24 hours, including serena williams after her first round win last night. we have different personalities

and people are different, not everyone is the same. i'm thick, you know? other people are thin, you know? everyone is different and everyone handles things differently, so you just have to let her handle it the way she wants to be in the best way she thinks she can. that's the only thing i can say. i think she is doing the best that she can. well, the former british number one annabel croft now of course works as a sports broadcaster. she's been telling us she'd be intereseted in teaming up with osaka to show her how the press pack operates. iremember being i remember being in floods of tears and some _ i remember being in floods of tears and some press conferences and i did not understand i was not mature, i did not— not understand i was not mature, i did not cope — not understand i was not mature, i did not cope with it very well, i felt enormous pressure and it did -et felt enormous pressure and it did get on _ felt enormous pressure and it did get on top — felt enormous pressure and it did get on top of me but is a much older woman, _ get on top of me but is a much older woman, life — get on top of me but is a much older woman, life is in a very different place. _ woman, life is in a very different place. i— woman, life is in a very different place, i have been able to put sport
