6:33 pm
0liver dowden said that the ecb had gone "over the top" and prime minister borisjohnson is said to have been "supportive" of his comments. however, england head coach chris silverwood said it was impossible to dismiss the tweets, and former england batsman michael carberry said robinson shouldn't play test cricket again. let's take a look at how this story unfolded. the posts were made in 2012 and 2013 when robinson was aged 18 and i9. they were revealed last week when he was making his england debut during the first test against new zealand at lord's. robinson apologised, saying he was "embarassed and ashamed." the ecb suspended him, pending the outcome of a disciplinary investigation, but robinson will take no part in the second test at edgebaston. speaking after the ecb's decision england head coach said education was key to helping eradicate racism from sport.

it was a stark reminder to all of the responsibility. he showed a lot of remorse. i think it's been a really big learning for him. the big thing is education. we are all striving to be better. none of us are perfect. we work hard to make sure that this great game is inclusive for everybody. well, here is what the culture secretary 0liver dowden tweeted on the matter. he wrote... earlier, i spoke to dean wilson, the cricket correspondent for the mirror.
6:35 pm
i began by asking him if he agreed with the culture secretary, has the ecb gone too far? not at all. i think the ecb have so far had a thing isjust not at all. i think the ecb have so far had a thing is just about as well as they could have. it's a very difficult and awkward situation for them, bearing in mind that at the start of the test match they are all wearing anti discrimination t—shirts. they seem to be following through on that message. i don't think they have gone too far. they are holding an investigation, they are holding an investigation, they are giving themselves a chance not only to work out what exactly went only to work out what exactly went on but to give 0llie robinson a full chance to explain himself and the situation. and i think he should get that opportunity, and then once they got all the information that they need, they will be able to work out if any further action needs to be taken. and it makes sense, i think, to take him out of the england environment were that goes on. michael carberry has said he thinks
6:36 pm
robinson should never play test cricket again, that he felt this was not a one off. do you think that robinson is getting his comeuppance? i certainly do agree that in terms of reading what you sow, this is certainly what is happening to 0llie. a huge embarrassment for him for something that he did quite a while ago now. but he was an adult when he did that. and he has to take full responsibility for that, which is what he is doing. as to whether or not he should ever play for england again, look, i do think that that would be pretty severe and too harsh in this instance because i do think that there is opportunity for people to rehabilitate and to show that they have learned and grown. it would be a pretty dismal and sad situation if none of us could learn from our mistakes and improve as people. so i would like to think
