6:32 pm
a good day, too, for the formula one championship leader — max verstappen will start the british grand prix from pole after winning the new trial sprint race at silverstone. and all smiles for st helens, who fightback to beat castleford in a thrilling challenge cup final at wembley. welcome along, thanks forjoining us. they don*t call it moving day for no reason — plenty of drama at the open golf today, where louis 0osthuizen began his third round with a two—shot lead. but is that still the case? ben croucher is at royal st george*s for us and has been following the action. it*s getting tight at the top. yes, really tense here and you call it moving day, but there is no movement at the top of the
6:33 pm
leaderboard for now. it is all quiet behind me because most of the action is taking place on the far side of the course at the moment. it is louis 0osthuizen you had a two shot lead at the start of the day, that has been reduced to one. he has been playing some calm and consistent golf for the most part, a birdie at seven and nine to —13 he has dropped back to —12. the man chasing him is the 2017 championjordan speed. his game fell apart the 2017 championjordan speed. his game fellapart in the 2017 championjordan speed. his game fell apart in recent years dropped and the world top 50 but he has been producing some of that golf we know all too well, and he isjust a shot behind the south african. huge crowds following them on the far side of the course and it is starting to get very tense. andy sullivan*s still the best of the british hopefuls, isn*t he, ben? and ireland*s shane lowry — defending his title of course — is doing ok after that
6:34 pm
disappointing first round. yes, pretty safe to say that we won*t have a british winner of the open championship this time around. darren clarke one of course in 2011, but andy sullivan is the best placed of the brits at the moment. he started the day at —6, made a bogey but has since picked up a shot on the back nine and moved back —6. not quite clicking into gear. neither too is the defending champion shane lowry from northern ireland. he picked up a fine birdie on the 16th, the par three, and seem to enjoy it following up with a birdie at 17. another one of the contingent not looking like they will be challenging at the top of the leaderboard. rory mcilroy is having a disappointing open again and is stuck down at —1.

a disappointing open again and is stuck down at -1. disappointment fou~ht stuck down at -1. disappointment fought rory _ stuck down at -1. disappointment fought rory mcilroy _ stuck down at -1. disappointment fought rory mcilroy again. - disappointment fought rory mcilroy again. heading into the late evening there, ben, still a chance for somebody to get momentum going into the final day? absolutely, because the conditions here at royal st georges, we build this as a difficult course, one that had teeth and has bite but it is not biting that hard at the moment. the wind that normally swirls around these links is rather hushed at the moment and the rain we had in the build—up to this tournament really helping the players. if you take a look at leaderboard, we can see louis 0osthuizen with a one—shot lead overjordan speith at the moment. he has been unable to click it in gear and the world number two has had a decent day and andy sullivan sitting on —6. we have about five or six holes left for those leading groups to get through in the next hour also. it is
6:36 pm
starting to get, rather like the weather, busy. tadej pogacar is set to win the tour de france again, after making it through the last time trial with a lead of five minutes 20 seconds. with the tradition that no—one attacks the yellow jersey on the final day, he*ll be confirmed as champion in paris tomorrow. the other parisian tradition is a sprint finish on the champs—elysees, and mark cavendish will be wearing the green jersey to contest that. drew savage reports. starting with such a big lead, tadej pogacarjust had to make it to the finish. no chance of any penultimate stage drama this year. the young slovenian has been in stellarform. in contrast to chris froome, who must have been relieved to get this far after crashing on day one of his comeback from injury. while mark cavendish has exceeded all expectations after his surprise late call up.
6:37 pm
while most can take it easy in paris tomorrow, he has every chance of a record—breaking 35th sprint victory, and winning the green jersey. but it*s been tough for geraint thomas — another crash and a dislocated shoulder ended his challenge for yellow. he*s done his best to help ecuadorian team—mate richard carapaz, who did enough today to hold on to third place overall for britain*s ineos grenadiers. belgium*s wout van aert was fastest around the 19—mile course — another impressive ride to claim his second stage win this year. but the undoubted star of 2021 has been pogacar. he*s earned that second yellow jersey, and he*ll be drinking champagne on the streets of paris tomorrow. max verstappen will start tomorrow*s british grand prix from pole position after winning formula 1*s new trial sprint race this afternoon at silverstone. the red bull driver got thejump on lewis hamilton off the line, and led comfortably to the end, extending his championship lead by a point to 33. imran sidat was watching.
6:38 pm
they say the formula 1 season is a marathon and not a sprint. but with an expectant crowd of around 100,000 packed into silverstone, all eyes were on lewis hamilton as the inaugural sprint race to disciple position made its bow. after topping qualifying on friday, hamilton was at the front of the grid, but as has been the case for much of the season, the red bull of max verstappen has been that little bit quicker. the dutchman stormed out of the blocks as he seized the early advantage. how crucial would that prove to be? 17 fast and furious lapsley ahead, with sergio perez first to feel the frantic nature. after spinning out of control, he somehow stayed in contention. hamilton has enjoyed a difficult campaign so far, but the 17 times world champion couldn*t catches nearest rival. the new experiment to bring more excitement to race weekends ends in familiar fashion,

this is a huge deal not only for sail gp, but sports all around the world to be able to take a leading role in what is undoubtedly the biggest issue, or certainly one of the biggest issues, globally at the moment, which is climate change. so we take it very seriously in our sport. i think it is a really exciting initiative, and we are racing out there on the water for the podium spots and we want to be the podium spots and we want to be the top team, but we also now are racing between each of our teams against one another to be the most sustainable and most impactful in our own league. i think through that, to separate example of an hour own sport throughout the different communities that we are racing in around the world and to pass on that
6:44 pm
message to other sports, because we know sport has such a powerful impact, particularly on young people, and those are the generations that will be the key to solving this issue in the future. we are out there racing on the water and harbours around the world and thatis and harbours around the world and that is our racetrack, if you like. and of course, the impact on the environment and on our oceans that we are seeing, you know, we want... it is in our own interest to protect that so we can raise, but it is the impact we can have on that global message we can have for protecting the environment and tackling the issues around climate change. it is very, very powerful. it is very, very powerful. that*s all from sportsday. stay with us on bbc news, now it*s time for ros atkins on the north american heatwave.
