in the last hour the nhs staff including nurses, paramedics, consultants and dentists in england will receive a 3% pay rise backdated to april. the government accepted the recommendations of the pay review body, saying the increase was in recognition of their extraordinary efforts during the pandemic. the welsh government has also offered nhs staff in wales 80% pay rise, whereas holyrood has given those in scotland a 1r% increase. chris hobson is chief executive of nhs providers. that is the body which represents hospital trusts in england and hejoins us now. thanks for being with us. your reaction first of all to this 3% pay offer. it is certainly a lot better than the original 1% that was put forward by the government that actually was received fairly widespread disappointment and condemnation in terms of inside the nhs. 3% was the
6:54 pm
minimum numberthat we terms of inside the nhs. 3% was the minimum number that we suggested to the paint review body was needed to recognise the efforts of nhs staff, so we are glad that that has recognised. but we know that it's really important nhs staff who are working so hard over the last 18 month period should be properly recognised and we need to keep our staff and recognise and reward their contribution. staff and recognise and reward their contribution-— contribution. how difficult do you think this might make _ contribution. how difficult do you think this might make it - contribution. how difficult do you think this might make it in - contribution. how difficult do you think this might make it in terms| contribution. how difficult do you i think this might make it in terms of both recruitment and retention? difficult to tell. we know that this pay is important and it is important to be part of this important thing. but there is a danger in saying that
6:55 pm
we really value your contribution but we are not recognising interns what we pay you. so i think as i said we are pleased that the government and the peer review bodies have listened to the fact that 1% was clearly inadequate. as i said, the present, talking to the trust leaders and the chief executives came surveyed them and they came back to us and they said somewhere between three and 1r% was the figure they were looking for. so at the bottom range of those expectations but as i said it's a lot better than 1%.— expectations but as i said it's a lot better than 1%. tricky because boris johnson _ lot better than 1%. tricky because boris johnson when that - lot better than 1%. tricky because boris johnson when that original i borisjohnson when that original 1% offer was made said it had been made on the basis of a for ability. he added we are in pretty tough times. and that is true. i added we are in pretty tough times. and that is true.— and that is true. i think there is really important _ and that is true. i think there is really important question - and that is true. i think there is really important question here, j really important question here, which is if you look at where we are in the nhs, even before we went into covid—19, there was a mismatch between the capacity we had available to treat the people who were coming forward and asking the
6:56 pm
nhs to treat them. so in this capacity demand mismatch and effectively what we now know is that there has been a whole load of extra demand placed on the nhs in terms of covid—19. so we are going to have to have a difficult discussion as a nation about how much the nhs actually needs in terms of its core funding. we must not get into the position of is effectively saying let's have a fantastic nhs and a really great treatment and world beating quality but not put the funding in. and that is the bit where we need a proper discussion. not just about pay, where we need a proper discussion. notjust about pay, is about the nhs as a whole as well. what is a level of funding that we need to give us the world—class service which we would all like to see as patients but wish to be frank nhs staff also want to be part of. band but wish to be frank nhs staff also want to be part of.— want to be part of. and is it your understanding that _ want to be part of. and is it your understanding that this 3% pay l want to be part of. and is it your i understanding that this 3% pay rise goes from the bottom to the top? so from the top consultants but also all the way back down to porters and
6:57 pm
kitchen staff. all the way back down to porters and kitchen staff-— kitchen staff. that's a bit we 'ust need to get fl kitchen staff. that's a bit we 'ust need to get to i kitchen staff. that's a bit we 'ust need to get to the i kitchen staff. that's a bit we 'ust need to get to the detail* kitchen staff. that's a bit we 'ust need to get to the detail and]. kitchen staff. that's a bit we just need to get to the detail and it's| need to get to the detail and it's been a bit of a confusing day because i think everybody was expecting the government which had tabled an nhs update to the house of commons early in the afternoon we would assume that would be to give us the details of this pay review but it did not come. so we are all a bit scrambled around at this point to really find out the detail but as i understand it, it will be to most but not all nhs staff. so in words for example junior doctors and run a multi—year pay deal that gave them 2% increases. they are not covered by this and that i'm sure will be something debated in the next couple of days because certainly trust leaders are clear there is an equity issue here which isjunior doctors making fantastic contributions over the pandemic period and there will be an argument that says this 3% pay rise should be extended to everybody but we recognise that that would mean having to update a multiyear deal. so we wanted to see what the
6:58 pm
detail is. i i, , deal. so we wanted to see what the detail is. i ii , i, deal. so we wanted to see what the detail is. i i, , i, i, detail is. chris, really great for our detail is. chris, really great for yourtime- _ detail is. chris, really great for your time. thanks. _ now the weather. here is been rich. good evening. it's been another day of hot sunshine for most parts of the uk, and in northern ireland, it looks like we have broken a record once again. 31.3 degrees at castlederg in county tyrone, provisionally the highest temperatures on record in northern ireland. the previous record was only sent last saturday. so, still a met office amber extreme heat warning in force here. also one for southern wales, parts of the midlands, down into the south west of england. and part of the reason for that heat warning is that temperatures really aren't falling far overnight. 11pm bringing temperatures still up into the 20s for some. as we head through the night, those temperatures won't fall an awful lot further. we will see some low cloud rolling in across northern and eastern scotland, parts of north east england. that'll retreat to the coasts through the day tomorrow. a few thunderstorms popping up, but for most, it's dry with hot sunshine. and in northern ireland tomorrow, well, we could be looking at temperatures up to 32 degrees. we may break that record once again.

stop hello, i'm nuala mcgovern, this is outside source. hello, i'm nuala mcgovern, this is outside source. the uk says it wants to redraw post—brexit trade arrangements regarding northern ireland. 110w now is the time to work to establish a new balance with the uk and eu can invest them to provide a platform for peace and prosperity in night in ireland. the european union immediately rejects any idea of re—negotiation. also in the programme: devastating floods in central china. in one city, the equivalent of a year's average rainfall has fallen in just three days.
