6:32 pm
good evening, welcome to sportsday. well, we are under way. after a year—long delay, the tokyo olympics are now in full swing, and we've had an action—packed first day from japan. 11 gold medals were up for grabs. the first of them went to china, in the women's ten—metre air rifle shooting, while ecuador*s richard carapaz took gold in the men's cycling road race. nick parrott rounds up some of the highlights from day one. fans won't be allowed inside olympic venues, but there was nothing stopping them lining the route of the men's road race. tens of thousands of them eager to catch a glimpse of the best riders in the world. less than a week after the tour de france, any of the big names were there, including yellowjersey winter. while he had high hopes,

thomas was fortunate to be injapan after dislocating his shoulder in a crash during the tour. his medal hopes were already slim, then they disappeared completely. a crash at the second olympics in a row forced him out with 37 miles to go, but if he can recover well, he'll ride in the time trial on wednesday. i he can recover well, he'll ride in the time trial on wednesday. i was 'ust the time trial on wednesday. i was just thinking. _ the time trial on wednesday. i was just thinking, not _ the time trial on wednesday. i was just thinking, not again, _ the time trial on wednesday. iii-“13 just thinking, not again, why? maybe i've done something bad in a previous life. but this month just isn't my month, that's for sure. but we still have wednesday, and i don't feel... ifeela we still have wednesday, and i don't feel... ifeel a bit beat up, like you do after a crash, so nothing serious. just rest up now and try and forget about cycling for at least this evening.— and forget about cycling for at least this evening. there was a small consolation _ least this evening. there was a small consolation for _ least this evening. there was a small consolation for thomas l least this evening. there was a i small consolation for thomas - least this evening. there was a - small consolation for thomas - his small consolation for thomas — his friend richard carapaz surged to victory. sheer delight for him at

the only the second ecuadorian to win a gold medal. the first gold was one by an olympic record score in the women's ten metre air rifle. china secured another two to end the day at the top of the table. the hosts were hopeful one of their most iconic sportsman, three—time olympic gold medallist and ten time world champion, would provide theirfirst success. this was supposed to be the fairy tale ending to the 32—year—old's career, but it slipped from his grasp on the high bar. fortunately forjapan, oconto was able to keep his grip as he held on to claim the country's first gold of their game. nick parrott, bbc news. an ideal start. well, lucy hockings is in tokyo for us, and says the japanese are delighted to have had something to cheer about.
6:35 pm
what a dream start for the host nation. it's what they would want, a gold medal on the first day, and they got it in the judo. it originated here injapan, so perhaps it's fitting. underscoring the huge strength of japan in this sport. it's fitting. underscoring the huge strength ofjapan in this sport. an incredibly a —— emotional, he was in tears. he came off the platform in tears, so was his coat. it was strange because the stadium was empty —— his coach. he was certainly very emotional and it was a big day forjapan. day one, and they already have a gold medal. so, for the first time of the games, let's bring you tokyo medals table after day one. and it's china that are top of the shop with three golds already, then italy, and hosts japan are tied second with one gold and one silver each. nothing as of yet for team gb,
6:36 pm
but there'll be plenty of opportunities to come. well, speaking of team gb, still to come on sportsday... more murray magic at the olympics. andy rolls back the years with a big upset in the men's doubles. i was iwasa i was a bit nervous today. yeah, we haven't _ i was a bit nervous today. yeah, we haven't played together before, but i think_ haven't played together before, but i think we _ haven't played together before, but i think we have the potential to do really— i think we have the potential to do really good. and away from the games, we'll have an update from cape town as the british and irish lions take on south africa in their first test. now to team gb, and who better to start with than adam peaty? the swimmer is one of britain's best hopes for gold in tokyo, and his games are under way. the world record holder and defending champion topped the timesheets on his way into the semi—finals of the ioo—metres breaststroke. fellow brit james wilby qualified in sixth place. well, peaty*s looking to become
6:37 pm
the first british swimmer to retain an olympic title, but admitted the lack of fans was hard to get used to. a bit weird. very weird. one of the weirdest competitions i've been to, but it doesn't really matter. it's not a final. for me, it's just getting out there and pressure doesn't really exist for me. i'm accountable for my own actions. training it's the job done, accountable for my own actions. training it's thejob done, so i'm looking forward to improving in the semifinal. and peaty*s semi—final is around 3.30am tomorrow morning. meanwhile, great britain's women comfortably made it through to the final of the a—by—ioo metre freestyle relay. the british team of lucy hope, anna hopkin, abbie wood and freya anderson won their heat ahead of the united states to qualify in fourth place overall. aimee willmott is another briton who's swum her way

through to a final. she was second in her heat in the women's aoo—metre individual medley, qualifying fifth fastest overall. max litchfield has also made it into the final of the men's event. now from the pool to the gymnastics centre, where britain's max whitlock made a solid start to the defence of his pommel horse title. he's safely into the final, along with the rest of the team. john watson has more from tokyo for us. hello from the arena, where there is huge relief here for max whitlock, who has booked his place. that was his intention, and after a five—year wait from the olympics in rio, he has to wait a little while longer. he duly performed and goes on to qualify for the final next week. he was doing his bit for the team.
6:39 pm
impressive performance on the parallel bars, just as there was for joe frazier, who qualifies for the final of the parallel bars. a former world champion. he set himself coming into this olympics, he wanted to try and contest a metal in both the all—around and individual and a team medal, and they certainly done that so far. into the team final and joe frazier will stand every chance once again of contending an olympic medal this time in that final of the parallel bars next week. it was a brilliant *s performance and shows the strength and depth in the squad when you consider that all three of those team gb gymnasts were in contention heading in that final rotation to make the all—around final. he's been in the squad seven years, a senior now. they all did their bit to put gb into the team
6:40 pm
final. a good start for the men's gymnasts. so, relief for max whitlock. here's what he had to say. it's been a long time, and that's why i feel surreal being here. year and a half ago, we didn't know if it was going ahead or not, but we're so relieved to be here. so far, the first competition has been amazing. i've been around for quite a few years, and people are still shocked when i get on. i was really pleased. that actually helps me and the team as a back—up, but also helps me keep that fitness level up and helped me prepare for pommel, so i'm happy. now, helen glover's return to another olympics was one of the standout stories from team gb ahead of the games. the two—time olympic rowing champion was back in the boat this morning,

just 14 months after having twins. she was competing alongside polly swann in the women's pairs, but asjim lumsden reports, it wasn't a typical start for helen glover. great britain's glover, defender of the title! ~ , ., ., ., , the title! when glover road to glory in 2016, it looked _ the title! when glover road to glory in 2016, it looked as _ the title! when glover road to glory in 2016, it looked as if— the title! when glover road to glory in 2016, it looked as if she'd - in 2016, it looked as if she'd reached the peak of her career. another olympic gold to add to her first in london. retiring on a high, she raised a family, a buoy and a twin girl and she raised a family, a buoy and a twin girland buoy she raised a family, a buoy and a twin girl and buoy followed. priorities have changed. it was announced that the tokyo games would be postponed. mum announced that the tokyo games would be postponed-— be postponed. mum is going to go to the olympics- _ be postponed. mum is going to go to the olympics- say — be postponed. mum is going to go to the olympics. say well _ be postponed. mum is going to go to the olympics. say well done, - be postponed. mum is going to go to i the olympics. say well done, mummy! a bit disappointing today, it was

6:43 pm
last night, and although numbers were low because of guidelines, i think everybody can appreciate that most from the sailing team, both world champions did fantasticjob. it's very hot, it's very humid, the marathon was pushed. but for the athletes down here that will be competing in the heat of the day, notjust competing in the heat of the day, not just our athletes, competing in the heat of the day, notjust our athletes, but also her horses as well, we have worked tirelessly with the specialist back in the uk, the technical specialists across the home country sports to make sure that our heat mitigation measures are of the absolute best. we know that they're good because our athletes perform well in the testaments, particularly triathlons —— test events. but we know that
6:44 pm
they're in good shape and we know our measures are good, but we're not resting on that. it is important and you can tell it's pretty warm and humid. the top two seeds in the men's tennis competition, novak djokovic and daniil medvedev, have both complained about the heat — djokovic saying the conditions in tokyo were the toughest he's ever faced on court. they both safely made it through, and the heat didn't seem to hamper andy murray either. the two—time olympic champion is in the men's singles tomorrow, but in the doubles today, he and partnerjoe salisbury managed to knock our the french number two seeds, nicolas mahut and pierre—hughes herbert, in straight sets to advance to the second round. it's going to be a really tough match — it's going to be a really tough match. they're one of the best teams in the _ match. they're one of the best teams in the world —

6:46 pm
so, a busy first day of action for team gb, and there's plenty more to let you know about, too. joe lynskey*s at the touchscreen with more for us. no medals for team gb on this first day of competition — that was also the case at london 2012 and rio 2016, where they went on to finish second in the medal table. but there has been progress for two gb sides in the team sports, because gb's women's football side are through to the knockout stages of their competition. they beat the hosts japan 1—0 to seal a second straight win and qualification from the group stage. gb weren't at their best in this match, but once again, ellen white stepped up to score her third goal of these games. but there's still a lot to play for in their final group match. that's against canada and the winner will finish top of the group. that's important, as it will almost certainly mean an easier
6:47 pm
match in the last eight. but this canada side are unbeaten since february and won against england back in april. you want to talk the group and play third—place rather than second—place in the dutch in brazil grew. the canadian manager knows a lot of these players very well. they need to play better as the permanent progresses. they've got three points on the board, six points. it's a big job for team on the board, six points. it's a big job forteam gb, on the board, six points. it's a big job for team gb, but they are good enough to win that game. kasey stoney there. and the hockey competition got under way as well today, joe. everyone remembers those brilliant scenes from rio. how did they start today? there are few more iconic moments for british hockey than that historic gold for the women's team in rio. they've had a much more difficult build up to this olympics, and they start their title defence against germany in the early
6:48 pm
hours of the morning. now, the men's team last won hockey gold at seoul in 88. they made a winning start to their tokyo campaign with a 3—1 win against south africa, and there was an opening goal from sam ward. he remarkably plays at this olympics despite being partially blind in one eye. he was struck by a ball in an olympic qualifier three years ago, suffered awful injuries which required 3! screws in surgery, but he returned to the gb set up last year. he's now helped them to an opening win which puts them in a good position to go through. well, not such good news in the first archery competition, where great britain were beaten by mexico in the mixed team event — south korea going on to win gold there. in the badminton, a winning start in the mixed doubles for marcus ellis and lauren smith, but the men's and women's doubles
6:49 pm
pairs lost their opening matches. and there was such disappointment for ashley mckenzie, who was knocked out in the opening round ofjudo's 60 kilogram event. he was totally devastated after that result. he said, "i had one fight — it didn't go the way i wanted. i just want to go home." all the best to ashley moving forward. all the best to ashley moving forward. before i go, a look at some of the images on the first day of what some are calling the ghost games — the 3x3 basketball court empty on this sport's first appearance at the olympics. beach volleyball, which was such a hit with the crowds at london 2012, silent in tokyo, too. now there were some crowds at the road race — that's because the route took the riders outside the tokyo metropolitan area — where some spectators are allowed.
6:50 pm
but, austin, we know these games are going to be different, they're going to be quiet. certainly a very different olympics. seems like we've never seen before. joe lynskey there. thanks very much. let's quickly take you through some of the day's other highlights. three on three basketball made its debut at the games. less than half a court, with just the one basket — ten minutes or the first to 21 points. it's the number one urban team sport according to a study by the ioc. kosovo's distria krasniqi won the first gold medal injudo, beating home favourite funa tonaki in the women's a8—kilogram final. it's just the second olympic medal for kosovo, who became independent only 13 years ago.
6:51 pm
and it was an early exit for the youngest competitor at the games. syria's hend zaza, atjust 12 years old, was competing in the table tennis singles — but she was beaten in the first round by opponent liu jia, who, at 39, is more than three times her age. so, a jam—packed first day from tokyo, but the action doesn't stop there because the british and irish lions are taking on south africa right now in the first test match in cape town. now, the home side completely dominated the first half — leading 12—3 at half time — but the lions improved after the break, luke cowan dickie going over to reduce the deficit to just two points. south africa soon extended their lead, though — faf de klerk with their first try. but three penalties from dan bigger put the lions in front, lions leading 19—17
6:52 pm
with less than ten minutes to go. about seven minutes to go in cape town. elsewhere, england's charley hull enjoyed an excellent third round at golf*s evian championship, the fourth women's major of the year, but she's got plenty left to do if she's to win the tournament in france. hull hit a five under par third round of 66 to move her to nine under for the tournament. but that still leaves her nine shots behind leaderjohng—un leesix, who went round in 68 — leaving her on 18 under overall heading into tomorrow's final round. so, here's the leader board after the third round. lee6 out at the top there on a brilliant 18 under par. american yealimi noh is her closest rival, five shots back on 15 under,
6:53 pm
with charley hull nine shots back in tied eighth. the matches are coming thick and fast now in the hundred. the northern supercharges are taking on the welsh fire in their first game right now. are taking on the welsh fire earlier, the trent rockets secured their first win of the new competition. they beat the southern brave by nine wickets. the rockets bowled first, restricting their opponents to 126 for eight, marchant de lange picking up five wickets. and the rockets chased down their target with 18 balls remaining, dawid malan top scoring with 62 for the home side. not such a good afternoon for the trent rockets women, though. they were beaten by the southern brave. the brave batted first, making 133—5 from their 100 balls. in reply, the rockets could only reach 110 for 7, as captain anya shrubshole finished with four wickets for just 13 runs. the northern supercharges beat welsh fire in today's other match.
6:54 pm
formula e rookiejake dennis won the first london e—prix of the weekend at the excel centre. he was ahead going into the final lap and crossed the line five seconds clear. that moved dennis up to second in the points table, with leader sam bird forced to retire with suspension damage. and after 16 months away, this morning was a special one for thousands of runners in england as they slipped back into their normal saturday morning routine as parkrun returned. there were a number of 5k runs across the country, ranging from west yorkshire to south west london. the free event has been going since 2004, and hadn't missed a weekend — until the pandemic forced the runs to be postponed. that's almost all we've got time for here on sportsday, but before we go, here's a look at what you've got to look forward to tomorrow from the olympics. natalie pirks has more from tokyo.
6:55 pm
great britain are traditionally low starters at the olympics, but tomorrow could be a good day. 18 goals of for grabs, and one of them in the winning road race with lizzie and contention. she is the silver medallist from london. but the dutch really are a force in that race. jones is bidding to become the first tae kwon do player in history to win a third olympic title. she was the london gold medallist and anything less than a gold she says will be a fail. a win will make her the first british woman to win gold at three separate games. plenty more up for grabs, but we will be our first look at a women's artistic gymnastics. that means our folks look at some own vials. she is the most decorated gymnast of all times and she has her own emojis on twitter 's —— simone biles. she has a new skill on hold,
6:56 pm
but if you landed here, it'll be named after her. that will be the fifth move name after her. that's how much of a legend she is. it's also worth waking up around 7am to watch out because of germany. they won't be in tiny leotards, they are in full length bodysuits and they say it's because they are taking a stand against the sexualisation in gymnast six. that has been a long time coming for many followers. natalie pirks there with some of the highlights of what's to come tomorrow. the action starts on bbc one at midnight. if you want more from day one though, today at the games is just starting over on bbc one. and of course the bbc sport website will have even more. have a very good evening. bye—bye.
6:57 pm
hello. for some of us, it's been another very warm and very sunny afternoon, particularly across parts of scotland, northern ireland and northern england. this is falkirk earlier on this afternoon, lots of blue skies and sunshine. for others, we had those thunderstorms through the first part of saturday morning. they've left in their wake a lot of cloud and further showers, and there's more thunderstorms to come in this forecast. so, here's the bigger picture — our area of high pressure bringing very warm, settled conditions starting to drift away north and eastwards, allowing this area of low pressure to tuck in behind. and it's going to generate more thunderstorms through this evening and into tomorrow. we have a met office warning, yellow warning, for these thunderstorms across parts of southern england, including the midlands and also wales. so, through this evening and overnight, the main focus of the thunderstorms will be across central and southern england, particularly later in the night across south east england, where they could become quite lively. more cloud pushing in from the north and the east, the clearer skies the further west you are. where we've got the cloud and any thunderstorms,
6:58 pm
very humid across the southern half of the uk. 14—16 celsius the overnight low here, more like 11—13 celsius further north, and we've still got this area of low pressure with us tomorrow. it's going nowhere fast — it's likely to stay with us through much of next week. so, the main focus for thunderstorms through tomorrow will initially be across parts of southeast england, maybe east anglia and then working their way slowly westwards through the day into parts of the midlands, wales, southwest england. always hit and miss, not everyone will see them. by and large, the further north and west you are, the drier and sunnier it will be once the morning cloud starts to break up. not quite as warm tomorrow across scotland and northern ireland, but for most, we'll still see temperatures in the low to mid 20s celsius. so, we start the new week with this area of low pressure. as i mentioned earlier, it's going to be with us for much of next week, so really quite a messy picture on monday. by this stage, it looks like the showers will push their way further northwards into parts of northern england, scotland and northern ireland. again, hit and miss. not everyone will see them, but where we do, they could bring
6:59 pm
a lot of rain injust a short amount of time. more in the way of sunshine across the southern half of the uk on monday, so here, temperatures rising again, whereas across scotland and northern ireland, they'll start to turn a little bit cooler. and that's really the theme for the week ahead. there'll be showers for most of us and those temperatures will be coming down both by day and by night. goodbye.
7:00 pm
this is bbc news, i'm lukwesa burak. these are the latest headlines in the uk and around the world. the olympic host nationjapan has picked up its first medals, winning a gold and a silver injudo. that was after ecuador*s richard carapaz won the gold in the men's olympic cycling road race, making it the country's second ever top medal at a summer olympics. coming up later in sport, we will round up the action on day one at the olympics where as you just heard the hosts japan have taken gold. the uk government attempts to tackle disruption to key services in england as hundreds of thousands
