in the weather through the weekend with the heat replaced by thunderstorms and we'll all see something different in the week ahead as we turn to something much cooler. there'll be plenty of showers around as well and some of them heavy and thundery but also some spells of sunshine, especially later in the week. and this is what's happening at the moment. the jet stream, the winds high up in the atmosphere, fairly active in the atlantic and diving down to the south of the uk. that's allowed this area of low pressure to develop, which has brought some torrential rain and thunderstorms across parts of south—east england through sunday. most of those will fade away through the overnight period, so we start the new week fairly quiet for many and mostly dry. some morning sunshine developing as the cloud starts to pull away from parts of scotland, north—east england and northern ireland, but thunderstorms never too far away. somewhat hit or miss, not everyone will see them, but they could bring a lot of rain in a short amount of time when they do occur, equally where we've got the sunshine, a much warmer day across the southern half of the uk, compared to the weekend. but those showers never too far away and they'll be brewing across western areas through monday night and into tuesday, tied in with this feature here, which will be gradually working its way eastwards and of course, we've
7:56 pm
still got low pressure, it's going to stay with us for much of the week. so tuesday is quite a messy day. it's sunshine and showers, but, at this stage, trying to pinpoint where those showers will be is always going to be quite difficult. they could well merge to give a longer spell of rain and where we do see the showers, they're likely to be heavy and still possibly thundery. well, we had temperatures of 29 to 31 celsius on some days last week. for tuesday, we're back down closer to average, at around 18 to 21 celsius. now, through wednesday and thursday, we've still got this area of low pressure. it begins to deepen as well, so we're going to see quite frequent showers through the middle part of the week, especially across scotland, down through north—western england, into wales, south—west england and then gradually working their way eastwards. so nowhere immune from a heavy shower on wednesday. again, temperatures typically 17 to 21 celsius, but likely to see some heavy rain from those showers, but always hit and miss. as we head into wednesday and then through into thursday, then the isobars come closer together, so that's going to strengthen the wind. some gusty winds later on wednesday and into thursday. 40, 45mph particularly for exposed coasts and hills. again, plenty of showers, but at this stage, it looks
7:57 pm
like they may stay through parts of wales and then to the north of this. so, further south, potentially a dry day with some spells of sunshine, but we'll all notice the strength of the breeze. and temperatures, 17 to 20 celsius on thursday. looking ahead to friday, it's still a showery day. at this stage, the focus is perhaps across parts of southern scotland, down into northern england. this hand then weakening as it pushes its way southwards. to the north of this, cool, with a scattering of lighter showers. further south, perhaps again mainly dry with some sunshine helping temperatures up to around 20 or 21 celsius. more like the mid to high teens further north. further ahead, well, it's a battle, really, between this area of low pressure and high pressure here, so through the weekend, potentially fewer showers, but they'll never be too far away. some spells of sunshine, but as we head into next week, it still looks like low pressure is going to be the dominant feature. so there will be some welcome rain in places next week.
7:58 pm
because it's coming in the form of showers, it will always be slightly unreliable. what we will notice, it is going to be much cooler, both by day and by night. that's all from me. goodbye.
