technologies that bring about big change also bring new problems. there is no point in denying that. but right now, ai is changing the world and opening up possibilities for huge medical breakthroughs. i mean, it helped us to develop highly effective vaccines in record time. so i know the pandemic is far from over, but i still feel kind of lucky that it happened now rather than even just a decade ago. and maybe it will mean the nhs is a bit more ready for the next one.

hello and welcome to sportsday — i'm chetan pathak, coming up on the programme... a games like no other — the tokyo olympics draws to a close. rain ruins the final day at trent bridge — the first test between england and india is abandoned — ending in a draw. and an emotional lionel messi says goodbye to barcelona.
7:47 pm
welcome along, thanks forjoining us. so the tokyo olympics have come to an end. the games like no other — held during a pandemic and delayed by a year — and marked by a fittingly unorthadox closing ceremony in the olympic stadium. no spectators as has been the case for all the events but it was still spectacular. the games' official sign—off featured music, football freestylers, breakdancers and bmx riders. the traditional athletes' parade was much more muted — 62 of the countries weren't represented by a flagbearer, because of the tight restrictions. but laura kenny was there for team gb — afterfinishing the games as her country's most successful female olympian as well as the most successful female olympic cyclist. well, laura kenny was involved in the action on the final day at the velodrome, as was her husband jason kenny, who has become the first briton to win seven olympic golds. our sports correspondent
7:48 pm
andy swiss reports. hold the front page! jason kenny a picture of delight after hurtling into the record books. the keirin is usually a slow burner of a race before a frantic late dash — but with three laps still to go kenny took his rivals completely by surprise. he sensed an opportunity and jason kenny will go for it for great britain... in a flash he was out of sight, charging clear and heading where no british athlete had ever been before. and they are not going to catch him. kenny comes to the finish here and we are watching british olympic history as jason kenny takes the title. his seventh gold, the most by any british olympian, a remarkable feat achieved and in remarkable fashion. i couldn't believe that no one came past. i felt like i was standing
7:49 pm
still at that last corner and i kept attacking way and i kept telling myself it is a medal even if one comes it isjust the middle. and even went across the gold line, it is the gold medal. i couldn't believe it butjust bizarre, amazing. but while there was history for one kenny, there was frustrated edition for another. laura could only finish the sixth in the omnium after finishing with a crash but disappointment was outweighed by pride for her husband. the amount of people who came up to me afterwards and was like... i was speaking to him last night and i told him ijust want to go home and when he went i was like, he has only gone and done it just typicaljason. a day of mixed family fortunes, but one that has brought britain a new record breaker. sir chris hoy is the manjason kenny has overtaken for most gold medals. and the six—time olympic champion says he couldn't be more pleased for his former teammate. his record speaks for himself.
7:50 pm
he is the most successful athelete we've seen. most successful not just in british history. he has not been a one hit wonder. four games from the moment we saw him come to the team in beijing in 2008 and as this freshfaced youngster, he has gained speed, power, strength but most importantly he has learned how to deal with pressure and you never count him out, you never count him off. it is one of these moments that almost the more pressure there is the better he performs. and i was so proud to see him performing and you know that your own records are going to get broken at some stage, they do not last forever so i am just so pleased it is a friend, it is a mate who has taken it away from me. britain's last medal of the games came in boxing — and it was gold for lauren price, who beat china's li qian to take the middleweight crown. price's is an incredible story — after excelling at a series of sports, she switched to boxing in 2014 and now she's an olympic champion. craig templeton reports.
7:51 pm
lauren price. european, commonwealth and world champion now olympic champion. lauren price has always done it all whether it was kickboxing, footballing or even driving a taxi but this was the one she wanted. that variety of sports creates a dangerous fighter, as china's li qian was finding out. there was no doubt who won round one. the following two were tighter, as qian kept at an arms length, the welsh woman waiting to strike. but soon the waiting would be over. lauren price is - the olympic champion! a moment of reflection, a moment to be thankful. thank you to everyone who supported me on this journey
7:52 pm
from starting off at eight years of age and just over the moon and thanks to everyone back home for the support. it means the world and it's got me through it. big shout out to my nan, can't wait to see her, and it is looking like we're going to go boxing right outside my house so happy days! price's medal is one of six from gb*s boxers equalling their best ever games. for the team, it was the icing on the cake. for price, it was priceless. craig templeton, bbc news. so here is the final medals table and the usajust made it to the top in the end. their golds in basketball, track cycling and volleyball took them above china. hosts japan had their best games and are third in the table with 27 golds, nine of them injudo. and two more golds for britain today — equals their medal haul from london 2012 and took them above the russian olympic committee.
7:53 pm
this team to deliver 65 medals is absolutely extraordinary and i would say that not only has the team made history but it has probably made history on the back of the most complex, the most challenging and most difficult of environments that we will ever face. winning medals across more sports than any other nation again, 18, winning sports across more disciplines than any other nation again. these are extraordinary statistics. away from the olympics... england and india have drawn the first test after rain washed out the whole of the final day at trent bridge. it had been set up for a potentially exciting finish as india needed 157 runs and england nine wickets for victory. but no play was possible and the match drawn. the two sides meet again at lord's on thursday for the second test. i think the weather's robbed us of a fantastic potential end to what's been an entertaining test match. we could've found ourselves
