the taliban are back, hours after arriving in cobble, sitting at the president's desk. earlier, cling to power but the man down in the streets is gone. afghanistan has new masters. 20 years after their first experiment in power came to a shattering end the taliban are back. hours after arriving in kabul, they were sitting at the president's desk. earlier, president ashraf ghani clinging to the last vestige of power. he has fled to uzbekistan, saying he left to avoid bloodshed. as the taliban moves in, the west moves out. helicopters ferrying diplomats to the airport. this disorderly end was not planned. hundreds of british troops have now arrived in kabul to help with the evacuation of thousands of british and afghan civilians. the operation is well under way. these troops may not be on the ground for long. kabul is in chaos.

people desperate to leave, taking what they can, fearing a bloody assault. there is little violence so far, but a lot of panic. crowds descended on banks, trying to take out their savings. as police officers and security officials abandoned their positions, the taliban urged people to stay calm. but the streets are full of dread. tens of thousands of civilians, displaced by fighting elsewhere, living out in the open. stories of abuses at the hands of the taliban. a translation: the taliban came into our village in the night. after a few days we managed to escape. they were murdering men and boys. they accused them of being in the army or police. they were taken out of their homes and murdered. outside the capital the taliban are tightening their grip. their success has government ministers reeling. in major cities. i did not expect this, but now i might face consequences that i've never even dreamt of. i guess that is the price that we pay for trying to make

an islamic government. there is a lot of concern from women in afghanistan. they have been writing to me and texting me, they are concerned that you will reimpose that regime of the 1990s where girls could not go to school, they could not work. can you give us clarity on what your plans are for that? there are hundreds of schools for girls, universities. girl students are studying. they are continuing their studies. in herat women are telling me that when they arrived at the gates of the university yesterday taliban fighters told them to leave. i am telling you the policy. the policy is that women can have access to education

and to work, and of course they will observe hijab, and that is it. running for their lives, frantically trying to escape afghanistan, this military plane, this is how desperate some afghans are to leave the country. a handful tragically clinging on even after take—off before falling to their deaths. foreign nationals and some afghans are being evacuated. huge crowds gathered after rumours even those without visas could travel. outside the airport, even more chaos. taliban members firing in the air to assert

women are already taking to the streets. we exist, they shout. work, education, political participation is our right. women make up half of afghan society, do not upset us, they tell the taliban, hear our voice. today the taliban also focused on that fear. translation: there will be nothing against women. - our people accept women are muslims, they accept islamic rules. if they continue to live according to sharia, they will be happy, we will be happy. they have said that so many times before. i would not trust them. if they were so keen on women's rights, they would not stop girls going to university, they would not stop women working. fighting finished, time for fun also, taliban—style. an unusual image. it may be but a brief pause before new rules

outside the airport thousands of people desperate to leave. this is the road anyone being evacuated has to travel along. the taliban repeatedly stopped us filming. they do not like the images of so many afghans fleeing their rule. they have denied claims they are at times preventing some afghans with valid documents from entering the airport. but many of those here do not have a visa. they are still hoping somehow to leave. i want to go anywhere else other than here, says this man. all the embassies and offices are closed, what can i do? then taliban fighters bring the interview to an end. the taliban are everywhere you go in kabul. they are heavily armed, but for the most part in the city they are friendly. today saw more protests, expressing defiance to their rule, rallying around the afghan flag.

more chaos outside this embassy, people frantically scribbling their names on pieces of paper, hoping this will somehow lead to a visa. these people have no real information about what they can do to leave afghanistan. they are desperate. they are coming to us, asking us will the canadians give us a visa? the fact is, most of these people will never get one. this family has not spoken to anybody, but heard rumours if they turn up they will find help. there is misery, i cannot even buy bread for my children, says this man. footage of even more chaotic
