6:32 pm
hello and welcome to sportsday. good evening. it's been a vintage us open, hasn't it? especially for british tennis fans — we've had british winners in the men's wheelchair doubles, mens doubles, mixed doubles, and of course, the women's singles — emma raducanu with that improbable run through qualifying, right through to the title. joe wilson has been reflecting on what is surely one of the biggest moments in british sport. emma raducanu! stand by for the most fearless exuberant execution of sporting ability you may ever witness. for emma raducanu, standard practice. there were two teenagers in the us open final, canadian leylah fernandez at the top of the screen. as early as the second game we saw intense rallies and we saw emma raducanu prevailing here.
6:33 pm
both players settled immediately to display a full range of their abilities. points were hard earned and skilfully won. nerves — no sign. two things were clear — we had a final worthy of the occasion and raducanu had the first set 6—4. she was broken early in the second set, broke back like that. now fernandez was struggling to hold her serve. did you see this shot coming? oh, my god! did we see any of this coming? 44 years of waiting, one hour 51 on court and one more serve. it is right to realise what this means for british tennis but also for world tennis. it was an outstanding match and an astounding champion. really, it's yours, it's all yours. we rest, recover and then we go again. that's what we do. i feel like i'm still very hungry and i've got a lot of

aspects in my game that ifeel i can improve. if sport exists to uplift and to amaze, emma raducanu is already at the pinnacle. joe wilson, bbc news. you can barely believe it, can you? and other british players were making history too — gordon reid and alfie hewett have become the first men to win all four wheelchair slam double titles in the same year. they beat gustavo fernandez and shingo kunieda 6—2 6—1 in the us open final, whilejoe salisbury has become the first briton to win two doubles titles at a grand slam in the open era, after winning the mixed doubles title at the us open, a day after winning the men's doubles. salisbury and american partner desirae krawczyk beat mexico's giuliana 0lmos and el salvador*s marcelo arevalo 7—5 6—2 at flushing meadows. it wasjust pure emotion, i guess. just joy and excitement. yeah, a bit of disbelief.
6:35 pm
but yeah, i walked away and said i wasn't really thinking anything, i was just enjoying the moment. and there could be more record breaking in new york later when novak djokovic takes on russia's danil medvedev in the men's final — aiming to become the first man in 52 years to complete the calendar grand slam. thejob is not done. excitement is there, motivation is there, without a doubt. probably more than ever. but i have one more to go. it is going to be a battle against another guy who has been in tremendous form, medvedev. he has won a lot of matches on hard court so far. he has already got a couple of grand slam finals behind him, so i think experience—wise it is different for him now. i am sure he is going to give it all to win it. max verstappen has been given a three—place grid penalty for the next grand prix after a dramatic crash between him and his championship

throughout the evening. but now on bbc news, it's time for the film review. hello, and welcome to the film review on bbc news. look who's here! he's real — it's mark kermode really here in the studio, not an avatar! it is fabulous to be back in the studio with you, jane. how lovely to see you again. so, we have a packed show coming up. so, we've got reviews of the collini case, which is a german crime thriller. we have respect, which is the biopic of aretha franklin, withjennifer hudson. and we have herself, which is the new film by phyllida lloyd, which i think you and i have different opinions about. to be discussed.
6:44 pm
we start with the collini case. yes, so, german crime thriller, based on a book by ferdinand von schirach — which i confess i have not read, although it's apparently a very famous book. story is a young lawyer is assigned to a case in which he has to defend a man, fabricio collini — played by the great franco niro — who is accused of murder. the case seems fairly hopeless, not least because shortly after the murder, fabricio collini presented himself, covered in blood, and now refuses to speak in his own defence. here's a clip.
6:45 pm
hmm. so it then transpires that the lawyer actually knew the victim. in fact, the victim was something of a mentor to him, took him under his wing, you know, almost fathered him. the question is why on earth would anybody want to kill this man, who was a respected industrialist and, as far as the lawyer knows was somebody who was a very good person? the author of the book, his grandfather was a very high—ranking nazi who was tried at nuremberg and one of the things the book is about is coming to terms with, you know, the past and the ghosts of your own past and accepting the fact that people who seem like one thing may actually be something completely different, so a lot of the story is to do with confronting guilt. it's also a pretty good drama in terms of —
