position, despite the club going into administration, but that he still hadn't had a phone call from the owner about the situation. business adviser firm quantuma were put in charge on wednesday, which triggered an automatic 12—point deduction from the english football league. rooney said he found the lack of communication from the owner mel morris disrespectful. one—on—one conversation no phone call, no message. i put a lot of effort into getting these players ready to play for club and i just found it a little bitjust reese back full, if i'm being honest. and that's why it's so important as i'm speaking in terms of the administrators, the communication is so important for the players, for the staff here. and you know the information, know what were looking at and if that's good news or bad news you have to know that so we can

deal with it. if if you know in ten months ago what you know now would you ever taken hisjob? i doubt it. if i'm being honest. i think i took thejob and are not if i'm being honest. i think i took the job and are not prepared to walk away from it, i'm here to fight for this club and for the staff to work this club and for the staff to work this club, her work so hard over the years, they need someone who can lead them, who understands what the going through and that's me. i wouldn't leave them in the lurch and i would fight for the staff, i want to fight for the man's and we will get through this. i don't think there's anybody the club will go into liquidation, we will get through this. and i believe we will come out of this better. let's take a look at some of the other sports news stories making the headlines.

uefa has doubled the prize money for the women's european championship next year, to be hosted in england. the 16 qualified teams will now share 16 million euros. the total prize money for the men's euro tournament last year was 371 million euros between 2a teams. us athletes have been told they must be vaccinated against covid—i9 if they are to compete at the beijing 2022 winter olympics and paralympics. united states olympic and paralympic committee guidelines say the "health and well—being" of all athletes is "top priority". and british—born gary hunt, has retained his world series cliff diving title with victory in italy. hunt nailed a difficult back three somersaults and four twists. he now competes for france, and this effort secured his ninth world crown. now, there's been a great deal of attention on the lasting effects of heading the ball in football,

or on heavy tackles in rugby. with that in mind, world rugby has announced new guidelines to reduce contact training to fifteen minutes a week to try to prevent injuries. it's been welcomed by former players like steve thompson, who won the rugby world cup with england in 2003. he was diagnosed with early onset dementia at the age ofjust 42 and has decided to donate his brain to scientists researching brain trauma. laura scott has this report. he was one of the heroes of england's world cup winning rugby team in 2003 but steve thompson's memories of that time have vanished. since being diagnosed with dementia last year at the age of 42, he has decided to do whatever he can to protect future players. this is just a very tiny part of what i can do, pledging my brain so that when i do pass away for them to be able to do research on it is massive, you know, for the massive big picture going forward looking after my children and other people's children.
6:49 pm
he is the first athlete to pledge his brain through the concussion legacy foundation, just launched in the uk, and urged others to do the same to help the foundation achieve ambitions to create a world without cte. it is our goal to prevent all future cte cases by 2026, in the next five years. which is actually the time the world cup will be taking place in north america. the only way we know how to prevent cte today is to limit your exposure to repeated head impacts. thompson is part of a group of former players taking legal action against the game's authorities for the permanent damage they claim was caused by their playing careers. they have led calls for a reduction in the physicality of the sport away from match days. today, world rugby announced that contact in training will be reduced across rugby union in an attempt to prevent injuries and protect player welfare. the new guidance includes limiting full contact training to 15 minutes a week.
6:50 pm
thompson stressed the importance of monitoring these limits and questioned whether they go far enough. how much do you need to be ready for the game at the weekend and how much do you need? it is good they are talking about it, good they have brought those guidelines in because it can always be changed, it can always be lowered, do they need those 15 minutes sometimes? i don't believe they do at times. experts describe the issue of brain injuries in sport as a hidden epidemic and said it is vital that players, governing bodies and scientists work together to fight what they called a common enemy. laura scott, bbc news, 0xford. there's more details on esther on the bbc sport website. there's more details on esther on the bbc sport website. we're building up to a huge fight on saturday — anthonyjoshua will take on 0leksandr usyk at the tottenham hotspur stadium where the brit is putting his ibf, wba and wbo belts on the line. the two faced off against each other in a tense first meeting
