for the fa, atmosphere, though, but for the fa, i think if they want to keep having games here at wembley, they will certainly want to attract a bigger crowd. but on the pitch, things went to plan. next up, lioness is on tuesday night to travel to latvia, and northern ireland host austria. they will look to put this defeat behind them as they continue with their world cup campaign. thank you very much for that. let's turn to the start of the t20 world cup now, and england were absolutely ruthless today against west indies. they bowled their opponents out for just 55 runs, crushing the current champions in dubai in a six—wicket win. a huge turnaround for england, given they lost in the final of the last t20 tournament to today's opponents back in 2016. jess softley has more. it may be five years since a dramatic final, since that dramatic final, but england haven't forgotten. this was a chance at redemption. the west indies aren't afraid to go big from the start. evan lewis set the scene early on. chris gayle may be the oldest cricketer in the tournament, but at 42, he is still a force
7:46 pm
to be reckoned with. but england had the answer, in the form of david miller's catch. 31 for 4, and it quickly turned into catching practice. the west indies all out forjust 55 in 14 overs. over to you, england. jason roy understood the assignment. roy goes over extra cover. excellent batting! the west indies needed something special. akil hussain provided it. jos buttler snuffed out any thoughts of a comeback, steering his side home. the best possible start for england. a day to forget for west indies. earlier, australia beat south africa by five wickets in the opening match of the super 12 round of the tournament in abu dhabi. neither of the sides has won this competition and south africa didn't get off to the best of starts when quinton de kock dismissed himself in bizarre fashion forjust seven runs.
7:47 pm
aiden markram top scored with a0 as south africa set australia a target of 119. it ended up being a tight contest with marcus stoinis clinching the victory with just two balls to spare. so, wins for both australia and england, then, eoin morgan's side getting the campaign going in the best possible way. former west indies head coach stuart law told me the confidence boost could set england up well as the tournament progresses. their bowling and fielding was outstanding. they took brilliant catches. the way they started, moeen ali brought his ipl form into the first game here, taking the two wickets, bowling his first four overs right through. great to see mills back as well, playing his first international for a long time and bowling well, and adil rashid, of his two and adil rashid, off his two point whatever it was! they should take a lot of confidence.
7:48 pm
and as an opener as well, a real statement of intent from england. it was. these tournaments, you have got to start fast. the 50—over world cup, you can build into it. you've just got to make sure you can get through to the next round. now, you've got to win every game you possibly can to make it easy for yourself at the end, and look at that net run rate that england have created now with that massive win. if it's a tight points table towards the end, they are well on top. so, as a former coach of the west indies, how would you assess how they respond to this now? knowing the mindset of the players, they will be embarrassed for a start. they will be out to prove a point. they are better than what they have shown today. they will go away and have a good talk about it tonight and possibly again address it tomorrow. they have a bit of time before the next game. by the time they come to wednesday's game, they should be ready to go. i don't think they need to press the panic buttons at this stage. they have got matchwinners all over the park, so theyjust need to get into the competition, play with a bit more positivity.
7:49 pm
i mean, they are very positive anyway. they need a bit more intent. and with that comes better stroke play, better choices. if they do that, they are tough to beat. stuart law talking to me there. in the premier league, it was a demolition job at stamford bridge as chelsea cemented their place at the top of the premier league with a 7—0 hammering of norwich, the league's bottom side. the league leaders just too much for them today — joe lynsky was watching the action. between chelsea and norwich city, 20 premier league places and several hundred million pounds. on paper, the home side would have it easy, and on the pitch they were extraordinary. mason mount started the rout. good shot, good goal! before today he had not scored in 25 games, and like him, callum hudson—odoi came through the youth ranks, and this clinical start had been made in chelsea. the blues scored a third before half—time and for norwich their top—flight dream
7:50 pm
is a miserable reality. they have two points and no wins, while chelsea now were going clear at the top. now it was a case of how many more to cheer. mason mount would make sure the score would be remembered. first with a penalty and then a tap in. it made it 7—0, chelsea's biggest victory in nine years, and a day that showed the mountain between the bottom of the top. between the bottom and the top. elsewhere, there were draws between leeds and wolves and southampton and burnley. but what a way for claudio ranieri to get off the mark as watford boss. after last week's 5—0 hammering at the hands of liverpool, they stuck five of their own past everton today. in his second game since taking charge, ranieri saw his watford side come from behind twice to win 5—2 at goodison park. the hornets packing a real sting, josh king with a hat—trick. watford are up to 14th. i told the players,
7:51 pm
never, never give up. it is not important, the result. we have to try to do our way, but when we lose the ball, we have to stay very, very carefully, because five goals against liverpool is too much. and then, i'm very happy, because we played quickly forward when i was to do this, and the other side, we keep position. it was a very good match for us. elsewhere, newcastle have earned their first point since the sacking of manager steve bruce. they fought from a goal down to draw 1—all with crystal palace. christian benteke scored for the hosts, before callum wilson equalised with a brilliant overhead kick. so was it a special moment for caretaker boss graemejones to lead the team for the first time? at the end, it was, because i do consider myself one of them. i've obviouslyjust had a football education in the process! at the end, i was pleased i gave them something. the boys were... the boys give everything they've got.
7:52 pm
i told them that was the only measurement today, if they give everything they've got. i said a win would come, so i've let them down, but we will take the positive points and try to improve next week and move forward. it was third versus fourth at kick off when manchester city travelled to brighton for the evening premier league game. but there proved to be big gap between the sides as city ran out 4—1winners at the amez. lydia campbell reports. this is the home of the high—flying seagulls, fourth in the table going into this game. but city are the defending champions, and they were ahead 12 minutes in. undogan able to capitalise on a rare robert sanchez mistake. and soon it was two. —— gundogan. a rare city break, and a phil foden finish. but brighton have here before. last season they came from 2— zero down to beat city here.
7:53 pm
could it happen again? not like this. foden getting his second, deflecting a gabrieljesus effort beyond sanchez. in the second half, brighton did give themselves a glimmer of hope. their player brought down by edison inside the box. penalty given in penalty scored. alexis mcallister pulling one back. but city re—established their 3—goal lead soon after. mahrez rounding up the scoring and ending all hopes of a brighton turnaround. on to scottish football now. hearts failed to take advantage of rangers not playing today, but their draw with dundee was still enough to send them top of the scottish premiership. john souttar gave them the lead, but poor defending punished byjason cummings for dundee made the score 1—1. hearts are top on goal difference with rangers in action tomorrow. celtic are nowjust a point behind, after beating stjohnstone 2—0. elsewhere wins for aberdeen, dundee united, and livingston. now to rugby league, and there was a clean sweep for england in their international double header with france. the men's team had to work
7:54 pm
harder than their 30. harder than their 30—10 scoreline suggested in perpignan, but things were much more comfortable for the women's side. they thrashed france by a0 points to 4. austin halewood rounds up the action. this should have been the day that england got their world cup campaign under way in newcastle. the stakes may not quite have been as high in perpignan, but the weather was certainly better, and england made the best of the warm conditions with some brilliant running rugby, and with two tries in the opening ten minutes, the pick of them from tom davis, the catalans winger one of eight debutants for england, scoring at his home ground. not a bad finish in your first international. england continued to cut the french open with four tries in the first 20 minutes. john bateman with another comfortable score for the visitors. but france are enjoying something of a revolution in the domestic game right now. with two teams in super league for the first time, they are riding the crest of a wave, and finally found their rhythm.
7:55 pm
they continued to disrupt england, but later the second half, but late in the second half, the visitors finally put the game to bed. bateman in again for their sixth try. a first win for new head coach shaun wayne, but not exactly the performance he was after. we have got three sessions in the field as a team, and i thought we did some good stuff. there will be lots of lessons what we can learn. there is some good video, what the lads will improve on, but a couple of games against australia and new zealand, but we did some good things. earlier, on the same pitch, england's women were comfortable winners, running in seven tries, with recently crowned woman of steeljody cunningham scoring the pick of them. with all of the women's team only semi—professional, the players only travelled to the south of france this morning, and that was after a covid test at 5am. but the early start didn't hold them back. caitlin beaver*s
7:56 pm
rounding off a 40—4 win. not a bad day all round in the french sun. unbeaten leicester tigers are six points clear at the top of rugby union's premiership table after a 19—11 win over sale sharks. and london irish caused an upset as they claimed their first win of the season, by beating last year's premiership runners up exeter chiefs. winger ollie hassell—collins went over for their fifth try as irish recorded their biggest win at sandy park beating exeter by 33 points to 21. elsewhere, there were wins for gloucester and harlequins. that's all from sportsday. see you again next time. hello. sunshine in short supply today, but turning milder slowly with this air flow coming up from the south—west. for part two of the weekend, we should see some more sunshine
