potions and drinks. they don't do black friday, but they do need to conjure up more stock. the huge headache right now is not having the products we want on the shelves to sell. stock being stuck all over the place, from here in the uk where we can't get manufacturers to make what we need, to as far as stuck in a port in china somewhere, our giftware not being able to get onto boats because the boats aren't there. it's frustrating and it's sad. there are fewer deals this year, and some aren't all they're cracked up to be, but shoppers are spending. i always love a good deal. and especially on black friday, yeah. we didn't plan on spending as much money as we have, but we've got some. we saved a lot of money. this could turn out to be the biggest black friday yet if retailers can deliver the goods. emma simpson, bbc news, newark.

implemented travel bans on southern africa. england's chief medical officer chris whitty thinks the delta variant is of greater concern than the new "omicron" covid mutation. that's according to the telegraph. the financial times reports that stock markets across the world have fallen sharply, after the discovery of the new covid variant raised fears over the economic recovery. a different story on the front page of the times. it leads with the english channel crisis — with the uk warning france of more deaths, unless talks between the two reopen. the breaking news that has come too late for the newspaper, the death of the hollywood composer who has died at the age of 91. outlets that will feature and some of the later editions and certainly some of the online additions. let's begin with cobit. he to start us off on mirror, please? cobit. he to start us off on mirror, lease? ., ,., please? 50, the mirror reporting that the please? so, the mirror reporting that the com _ please? so, the mirror reporting that the cobit vaccine, - please? so, the mirror reporting that the cobit vaccine, there - please? so, the mirror reporting| that the cobit vaccine, there are fears that co— that very end is already in the uk. we know that there has been reports that there is

already the variant identified in belgium, and i think rightly so, there has been fears that it could already be here, from what i understand, the variant that has been found in an individual in belgium is actually somebody who arrived in belgium about two weeks ago. scientists are already fearing that this could be the case here, and with this new variant, i think it's a massive concern for people at the moment because it seems to be a lot more severe than the delta variant from what we know so far. obviously there is a lot of things that still need to be identified, which we expect to happen in the next two weeks. there are already fears that it could potentially be a given that it's already in europe. just in terms of that story, it is hugely concerning for people, this latest development. we have got on the front of the telegraph a bit of balance, if you like, from chris whitty saying, well, yeah, this is
10:34 pm
worrying, but set against how worrying, but set against how worrying delta was when it first appeared, we shouldn't get too quickly. iii appeared, we shouldn't get too cuickl . , ., appeared, we shouldn't get too cuickl . ,, ., appeared, we shouldn't get too cuickl. ., ., quickly. if you go back to the mirror, quickly. if you go back to the mirror. by — quickly. if you go back to the mirror, by the _ quickly. if you go back to the mirror, by the way, - quickly. if you go back to the mirror, by the way, already i quickly. if you go back to the | mirror, by the way, already in quickly. if you go back to the - mirror, by the way, already in the uk, it's_ mirror, by the way, already in the uk, it's an — mirror, by the way, already in the uk, it's an inverted, comments about the newspaper term for its acclaim, not a _ the newspaper term for its acclaim, not a fact — the newspaper term for its acclaim, not a fact. , ,., ., ., ~ not a fact. very important, thank ou not a fact. very important, thank you stapley _ not a fact. very important, thank you stapley said _ not a fact. very important, thank you stapley said just _ not a fact. very important, thank you stapley said just for - not a fact. very important, thank you stapley said just for the - you stapley said just for the viewers there. it also, yes, i think there's a degree to which the papers coverage tonight, a degree to which the coverage is angled a little bit on what you want it to be, and i think the telegraph clearly, of course, what chris whitty has said is that course, what chris whitty has said is tha . course, what chris whitty has said is than , ., ., , is that the delta, not 'ust when it arrived also * is that the delta, not 'ust when it arrived also now, _ is that the delta, not just when it arrived also now, 50,000 - is that the delta, not just when it arrived also now, 50,000 new. arrived also now, 50,000 new infections, _ arrived also now, 50,000 new infections, which are edging back upwards— infections, which are edging back upwards again. quite a large number, when _ upwards again. quite a large number, when you _ upwards again. quite a large number, when you look at what's happening in euroue, _ when you look at what's happening in europe, infections are going up very rapidly— europe, infections are going up very rapidly in _ europe, infections are going up very rapidly in many countries, lockdowns going _ rapidly in many countries, lockdowns going on. _ rapidly in many countries, lockdowns going on. so— rapidly in many countries, lockdowns going on, so immediate problem is the delta _ going on, so immediate problem is the delta variant and then the spread — the delta variant and then the spread of what is already with us. the looming problem is this new

10:36 pm
that we should be kind of getting too panicky, but i suppose it's understandable that people are going to be feeling a bit nervous given all the ups and downs that we have had in dealing with this farce over the last 20 months.— the last 20 months. absolutely. and i think it is the last 20 months. absolutely. and i think it is right — the last 20 months. absolutely. and | think it is right that _ the last 20 months. absolutely. and i think it is right that people - the last 20 months. absolutely. and i think it is right that people are - i think it is right that people are really keeping an eye on this and are quite cautious about it. when we were looking at the delta variant before and when that was identified as a variant of concern that government didn't act quickly enough and it's a bit odd but i'm hearing some people kind of we don't know what it is yet but it's being identified as a concern of the world health organisation, and i think this is the time exactly that we should be having these travel restrictions in place, and we should be taking it seriously. i think it's a little bit counterproductive in a sense, given that, you know, we are getting information rapidly, and we know more about exactly how serious this variant could potentially be in
10:37 pm
a matter of weeks. if we find out that it a matter of weeks. if we find out thatitis a matter of weeks. if we find out that it is a lot more severe than the delta variant, we have to put these restrictions in place and it's going to be very difficult for some of these officials to kind of backtrack on that, so i kind of thing, you know, being cautious to begin with now is definitely the best approach. this begin with now is definitely the best approach.— begin with now is definitely the best approach. as he said, try not to send out _ best approach. as he said, try not to send out to _ best approach. as he said, try not to send out to mixed _ best approach. as he said, try not to send out to mixed messages. | best approach. as he said, try not. to send out to mixed messages. of course, as he said commit will be a few weeks yet, which takes us neatly to the front of the mail. keep calm and don't let coalbed ruin christmas, joanna.- and don't let coalbed ruin christmas, joanna. . ., ., christmas, joanna. yeah, i mean that doesnt christmas, joanna. yeah, i mean that doesn't surprise _ christmas, joanna. yeah, i mean that doesn't surprise me _ christmas, joanna. yeah, i mean that doesn't surprise me from _ christmas, joanna. yeah, i mean that doesn't surprise me from the - doesn't surprise me from the newspaper like the mail to kind of say, keep calm, carry on committee of the newspaper that usually has the front page, you know calling things freedom day when we are coming out of lockdown and it's usually very, the language is usually very, the language is usually in that kind of direction, i do think that it's the wrong approach to have because, you know, when we have been a bit more relaxed
10:38 pm
in these situations, we kind of, you know, condemned the government for that and we say people and taking things seriously, you know, it's right to not necessarily scare people, seeing as we don't have enough information at hand at the moment, but i don't think that, you know, we should be talking about it ruining christmas. it's a lot more serious than what they are making out, in my opinion.— serious than what they are making out, in my opinion.- well, | serious than what they are making | out, in my opinion.- well, i out, in my opinion. martin? well, i mean, of course, _ out, in my opinion. martin? well, i mean, of course, they _ out, in my opinion. martin? well, i mean, of course, they are - out, in my opinion. martin? well, i mean, of course, they are right - out, in my opinion. martin? well, i mean, of course, they are right in l mean, of course, they are right in the sense — mean, of course, they are right in the sense that of christ the mail and the — the sense that of christ the mail and the telegraph and the mail both are anti- _ and the telegraph and the mail both are anti— restrictions broadly speaking _ are anti— restrictions broadly speaking would rather they didn't happen, — speaking would rather they didn't happen, so their coverage is going to be _ happen, so their coverage is going to be focusing a bit more on that tone _ to be focusing a bit more on that tone of— to be focusing a bit more on that tone of what chris whitty in particular has said against getting too concerned too quickly. on the other— too concerned too quickly. on the other hand. — too concerned too quickly. on the other hand, so in the other hand it's quite — other hand, so in the other hand it's quite sensible to take some precautions. i think the point as it goes _ precautions. i think the point as it goes back— precautions. i think the point as it goes back to let chris whitty has said that — goes back to let chris whitty has said that the immediate concern is sonrething — said that the immediate concern is something else. we need to
10:39 pm
understand a little bit more what this variant actually is without thinking — this variant actually is without thinking it's automatically doing the bulk— thinking it's automatically doing the bulk command of christ is quite sensible _ the bulk command of christ is quite sensible in— the bulk command of christ is quite sensible in the government has done this bringing in this travel ban and other— this bringing in this travel ban and other people as well that is obviously a great sense and some safety _ obviously a great sense and some safety first — obviously a great sense and some safety first approach, and in particular trying to slow down the arrival _ particular trying to slow down the arrival of — particular trying to slow down the arrival of this vaccine. it's obviously— arrival of this vaccine. it's obviously certain, i would've thought. _ obviously certain, i would've thought, that it will arrive yet some — thought, that it will arrive yet some point, history has shown it's impossible — some point, history has shown it's impossible to shut variance out in the long _ impossible to shut variance out in the long term, because of the nature of travel— the long term, because of the nature of travel movements, even with travel— of travel movements, even with travel restrictions, because clearly there _ travel restrictions, because clearly there is— travel restrictions, because clearly there is trade and all sorts of things— there is trade and all sorts of things that go on. so it's not a nratter of— things that go on. so it's not a matter of whether it does arrive here, _ matter of whether it does arrive here, it's — matter of whether it does arrive here, it's when it arrives and how quickly— here, it's when it arrives and how quickly it— here, it's when it arrives and how quickly it spreads. that's the crucial— quickly it spreads. that's the crucial thing. then obviously what the potency of it is in terms of overcoming vaccines and so on, and all of— overcoming vaccines and so on, and all of those — overcoming vaccines and so on, and all of those things are slightly unclear— all of those things are slightly unclear at the moment, but clearly if we _ unclear at the moment, but clearly if we can— unclear at the moment, but clearly if we can manage to slow down the arrival of—
10:40 pm
if we can manage to slow down the arrival of it. — if we can manage to slow down the arrival of it, we find out asjoanna was saying. — arrival of it, we find out asjoanna was saying, the degree of potency of this variant — was saying, the degree of potency of this variant. at all makes sense. at the sanre _ this variant. at all makes sense. at the same time, it's right to not panic— the same time, it's right to not panic and — the same time, it's right to not panic and tend to think the world will end — panic and tend to think the world will end immediately.— panic and tend to think the world will end immediately. although, as the ft demonstrates, _ will end immediately. although, as the ft demonstrates, that's - will end immediately. although, as the ft demonstrates, that's not. the ft demonstrates, that's not necessarily the approach adopted on the markets. riff necessarily the approach adopted on the markets-— the markets. of course. and if you are in the travel— the markets. of course. and if you are in the travel sector, _ the markets. of course. and if you are in the travel sector, for - are in the travel sector, for instance. _ are in the travel sector, for instance, the big airlines about taking — instance, the big airlines about taking a — instance, the big airlines about taking a hit, understandably, and one feels— taking a hit, understandably, and one feels very sorry for south african — one feels very sorry for south african terrorism, and as for example. _ african terrorism, and as for example, you feel sorry for her country. — example, you feel sorry for her country, they have done the right thing _ country, they have done the right thing in — country, they have done the right thing i'm actually in terms of being very quick— thing i'm actually in terms of being very quick off the mark to alert people — very quick off the mark to alert peopte to — very quick off the mark to alert people to this variant and what they have discovered coming they will cover— have discovered coming they will cover economic consequences, but unfortunately, there is no real alternative to that, and of course, all the _ alternative to that, and of course, all the industries that are affected by any— all the industries that are affected by any sort of increased restriction, increased lockdowns and

so on, _ restriction, increased lockdowns and so on. are _ restriction, increased lockdowns and so on, are going to suffer economically, the other hand, stock markets _ economically, the other hand, stock nrarkets go — economically, the other hand, stock markets go up and down very rapidly, so it nray— markets go up and down very rapidly, so it may turn out that in a week's tinre, if— so it may turn out that in a week's tinre, if it— so it may turn out that in a week's time, if it turns out that two or three _ time, if it turns out that two or three weeks' time, the potency of this is— three weeks' time, the potency of this is not— three weeks' time, the potency of this is not quite so serious and that— this is not quite so serious and that some _ this is not quite so serious and that some of the suggestions about the vaccines being tweak of all, if that is— the vaccines being tweak of all, if that is the — the vaccines being tweak of all, if that is the correct where it, to counter this, that is the correct where it, to counterthis, it that is the correct where it, to counter this, it may not be, as devastating as the fears are that it could _ devastating as the fears are that it could be — devastating as the fears are that it could be. it*s devastating as the fears are that it could be. * , , devastating as the fears are that it could be. h , ,., could be. it's interesting. the dow jones in new _ could be. it's interesting. the dow jones in new york _ could be. it's interesting. the dow jones in new york filed _ could be. it's interesting. the dow jones in new york filed two - could be. it's interesting. the dow jones in new york filed two and i jones in new york filed two and half points. it's the largest file in more than a year. itjust underlines again the volatility of so many stocks in the light of all the uncertainty that cobit has left us as a legacy, even as its less than it was because of vaccines, but we will obviously see how that develops. it's interesting something else they were talking about, joanna, talking about the point that
10:42 pm
they have developed their own vaccine production because, frankly, all the vaccines have been kind of hoover adopted by the wealthier countries, particularly in the northern european countries, north america and so on, and various other countries, and they had warned us, hadn't taken at that if we didn't get the world vaccinated, the virus would have the breathing space, as it were, to keep on evolving. absolutely. this is one of the things i've been saying since near the start of the pandemic. being someone who it's from africa and knowing the situation they're in hearing from family members as well, i know the severity of things in that sense. i think something like 2% of africa have been fully vaccinated at this point, which in my opinion is absolutely unacceptable. when we got to the point of vaccinating children and younger people and less vulnerable people, i did think at that point that there should also be a concentration of a more global approach to make sure that things
10:43 pm
like this don't happen. i don't really think that anybody in the west can complain about things like the affects on the stock market when new variance in marriage because theyjust new variance in marriage because they just simply haven't new variance in marriage because theyjust simply haven't done enough to counteract that and they haven't done enough in terms of, you know, the patents and staff are the vaccines. so, you know, they can only really blame themselves in that situation, but also, even morality, i would be astounded at how selfish some areas of the world had been in terms of vaccine equity overall. joanna, let's go to the front of the times, untilthis joanna, let's go to the front of the times, until this new variant story and marriage to commit a kind of singular story that everyone had been talking about the last three days, and i hope we will continue to talk about it, the problem certainly destination. for a lot of these peo about u know, the reason destination. for a lot of these isn't going away, that is the death peo about it, now, the reason destination. for a lot of these of the 27 people who drowned off the peo going it, now, the reason coast of france on wednesday on evening, trying to get to the uk. it

is poignant photograph... on her wedding day, and it says, which is really more disturbing when you look when at the caption, given that we have that en that we been talking about illegal migration in all the rest of it, this is a it, that we woman travelling from kurdistan to join her husband in britain, a husband to i assume would be here i it, that we legitimately. we don't know that, but clearly, it is part of it. i i is it, thatwe think a lot of people forget when we i is it, forget*e talk about the situations that there are actual legitimate reasons that there people want to come to the uk, obviously there is legitimate reasons and the fact that they were in danger, but also it i hear a lot of arguments about how they should stay in france are the first country should are should that they kind of land and because of land there essentially a safety, but realistically, under international law from my understanding, you are allowed to pass through several countries to get to your final
