11:30 pm
hello, i'm lukwesa burak. this is bbc news. we'll be taking a look at tomorrow mornings papers in a moment — first the headlines.
11:31 pm
the government announces new restrictions to be introduced next week in england — as 2 cases of omicron — a new variant of covid—19 — are discovered in the uk. people in england will now once again have to wear face masks on public transport and in shops. all contacts of suspected omicron cases must self—isolate for 10 days — regardless of their vaccination status. all travellers entering the uk from abroad will have to take a pcr test and self—isolate until they get a negative result. hello and welcome to our look ahead to what the the papers will be bringing us tomorrow. with me are broadcasterjo phillips and nigel nelson —
11:32 pm
political editor at people & sunday mirror. tomorrow's front pages, starting with... the sunday express*s headline is "masks back to fight variant" as the paper reports on the no ten press conference where borisjohnson said, face coverings must be worn in shops and on public transport. it's the same lead in the sunday telegraph, which says there are fears for christmas as the first omicron variant cases are found in brentwood in essex and nottingham. "christmas plans thrown into doubt as new covid variant arrives in the uk" is the sunday times*s take. the prime minister is the picture lead on the front page of the digital independent which also focuses on all people arriving in the uk having to take a pcr test while the travel red list is expanded. the sunday people proclaims
11:33 pm
beat mutant virus to save christmas. the sunday mirror takes a swipe at the prime minister with "mask up! even you, boris" saying it hopes the pm will hopefully follow his own rules as a raft of restrictions are announced. above the omicron coverage in the observer is a photo of a family from iraqi kurdistan who all drowned in the english channel while making that perilous trip from france to britain to claim asylum. and the mail claims an exclusive that civil servants have blocked the word "christmas" from efforts to avert a winter covid crisis for fear of offending minority religions. that's a little flavour of those front pages that you be waking up to on sunday morning. hello both. nigel, you're going to kick us off. front page of the express. mass to fiuht front page of the express. mass to fi . ht the front page of the express. mass to fight the very _ front page of the express. mass to fight the very end. _ front page of the express. mass to fight the very end. that's - front page of the express. mass to fight the very end. that's right. - fight the very end. that's right.
11:34 pm
this is a team that's running through many of the papers tomorrow morning. what the expresses making the point is that masks are being brought back principally to save christmas. which all feels a bit like deja vu, really from what happened last share. borisjohnson saying ho ho ho, but christmas is safe and look what happened last year. of course we don't know how save christmas will be this year. also, we don't know whether or not there is any sort of vaccine escape from the new omicron variant. this is our problem that at the moment you are bringing in a load of measures in the hope you can mitigate just in case this virus can actually get through current vaccines. so what we really could hope for is that they can develop a new vaccine if it does very quickly. apparently the makers say they can.
11:35 pm
joe, the sunday mirror also talking about the mass but squarely pointing the finger at the prime minister. yes, he's being seen on trains, and a theatre. _ yes, he's being seen on trains, and a theatre. out— yes, he's being seen on trains, and a theatre, out and about not wearing a theatre, out and about not wearing a mask, _ a theatre, out and about not wearing a mask, even— a theatre, out and about not wearing a mask, even at a hospital a couple of weeks _ a mask, even at a hospital a couple of weeks ago. if you want people to do this and — of weeks ago. if you want people to do this and we need to do this that you have _ do this and we need to do this that you have to— do this and we need to do this that you have to lead by example. it would _ you have to lead by example. it would be — you have to lead by example. it would be quite a good idea if boris johnson _ would be quite a good idea if boris johnson did it. i think what's interesting is that this is actually how we — interesting is that this is actually how we deal with this, how the country— how we deal with this, how the country deals with this. it's probably— country deals with this. it's probably a good indicator of what lies ahead in the future. because as nigel— lies ahead in the future. because as nigel said. — lies ahead in the future. because as nigel said, this is about buying time, — nigel said, this is about buying time, it's— nigel said, this is about buying time, it's time to get the data analysed _ time, it's time to get the data analysed of its time for the scientists to have a look at what this new — scientists to have a look at what this new variant means. whether it is highly_ this new variant means. whether it is highly infectious but not highly lethal _ is highly infectious but not highly lethal. and all of that stuff because there will be another one after—
11:36 pm
because there will be another one after this— because there will be another one after this and you can bet your bottom — after this and you can bet your bottom dollar on it. so how we handle — bottom dollar on it. so how we handle this without going back into a full— handle this without going back into a full lockdown or without collapsing the travel and hospitality industry again will be very interesting. i think the governments got to walk a very, very fine line _ governments got to walk a very, very fine line on— governments got to walk a very, very fine line on being safe. and is hugh pam said _ fine line on being safe. and is hugh pam said earlier, is three weeks' time _ pam said earlier, is three weeks' time we — pam said earlier, is three weeks' time we might all be sitting well, you should've clamped down sooner. we will _ you should've clamped down sooner. we will have to wait and see. it's interesting, we've learned so much about our economy. because hospitality... let's turn to the sunday times, hospitality has been exempt on the mask wearing restriction was up you start to see how important different aspects of the economy are.— the economy are. yes, this is one of those things — the economy are. yes, this is one of those things that _ the economy are. yes, this is one of those things that boris _ the economy are. yes, this is one of those things that boris johnson - the economy are. yes, this is one of those things that boris johnson is i those things that borisjohnson is already been criticised for by labour. one of the things that he really should've done was bring in plant beat much earlier. as the
11:37 pm
booster programme was taken off. we should already have been wearing face masks in shops and on public transport. and we should already have covid passes to get into pubs, restaurants and up and the advice would be out there to work from home where you can. it seems that we are a bit behind the curve on this one wasn't one of the other things he sunday times is talking about which is actually quite interesting is what's going to happen with the future of the boosterjobs. because what the paper suggesting is that it's going to be extended even further to the 18 to 39 age range. obviously that's got to be approved byjc*s obviously that's got to be approved by jcs evi obviously that's got to be approved byjc*s evi the vaccination regulator. if they do that it's going to mean having the time between second and third doses. — cutting. those who had boosters told we couldn't possibly have those

11:40 pm
an event in the calendar. at the idea of trying to ban the word christmas would be like banning santa or christmas shopping. it does seem to be ridiculous but it seems to also be the way that whitehall is going. to also be the way that whitehall is ttoin _ , to also be the way that whitehall is ttoin_ , i. going. sounds as if they are sli . htl going. sounds as if they are slightly out _ going. sounds as if they are slightly out of _ going. sounds as if they are slightly out of touch. - going. sounds as if they are slightly out of touch. the i going. sounds as if they are - slightly out of touch. the americans have always — slightly out of touch. the americans have always had _ slightly out of touch. the americans have always had this _ slightly out of touch. the americans have always had this happy - slightly out of touch. the americans have always had this happy holidays| have always had this happy holidays thing _ have always had this happy holidays thing. that's something that we have resisted _ thing. that's something that we have resisted in _ thing. that's something that we have resisted in art rather smoothly british— resisted in art rather smoothly british way, that's totally american to do— british way, that's totally american to do that — british way, that's totally american to do that. but christmas for a huge and number— to do that. but christmas for a huge and number of people is about eating. — and number of people is about eating, drinking and shopping. it's -ot eating, drinking and shopping. it's got absolutely nothing to do with christianity. in fact, on this very paper, _ christianity. in fact, on this very paper, above the headline about the woke blob _ paper, above the headline about the woke blob tries to ban christmas there's a 16 page pull out about foolproof— there's a 16 page pull out about foolproof christmas recipes. if you want _ foolproof christmas recipes. if you want to _ foolproof christmas recipes. if you want to get a message across to people _ want to get a message across to people and you are targeting a group

11:42 pm
actually having these kinds of sessions is to expand the experience of civil servants. they can question his people, they can talk about policy. but apparently they're being banned to the point that their social media is being trolled to find out what they've been saying about day, the prime minister or the chancellor or whoever. it seems astonishing from an administration which seems to always be against this. borisjohnson is a libertarian. and the tories have been banging on about what's been happening in universities where professors are hounded out for their views, there is a cancelled culture stopping people coming in and saying things that students don't like. now the tories seem to oppose this but not in their own back yard. itjust seems to be absolutely gross hypocrisy. it seems to be absolutely gross hypocrisy-— seems to be absolutely gross h ocris. ., , ., hypocrisy. it does make you wonder what was going _ hypocrisy. it does make you wonder what was going to _ hypocrisy. it does make you wonder what was going to read _ hypocrisy. it does make you wonder what was going to read when - hypocrisy. it does make you wonder what was going to read when the i what was going to read when the strategy, the civil service

11:45 pm
president emmanuel macron heads together at the moment on the basis they seem to be arguing over the sending of the letter when what we should be doing is trying to come up with proper solutions to this crisis. and that doesn't seem to be happening. i think it's going to be an international problem and it may be the only way of getting say fruit will be to go through as we did with the 20,000 syrians who came here, go through filing applications in refugee camps. where at least i don't have to come to the coast of france and trying get the channel. unfortunately, we run out of time. i think you covered everything there for us at nigel on that particular story. to enjoy the rest of your weekend. thank you forjoining us here on bbc news for our look at the papers. from myself and the team, cheerio.
