at the moment, we are not seeing very high rates in terms of transmission, but it is early days yet. what is important is to continue to observe and monitor, and hopefully in the next couple of weeks we will have a much better picture. the emergence of the omicron variant has prompted big changes to the uk's vaccination programme. as well as offering boosters to more people, the time between second dose and booster has been slashed from six to three months, so the encouraging news on how effective they are is welcome. the data on the boosters is fantastic because it is suggesting that if you have had your first and second shot, followed by the booster, you have got supercharged immunity, and this will help us to at least deal with some of the effects of omicron when it really takes off here. there have been some problems — delays in changing the legal framework to accommodate the new plans have seen some people turned away from walk—in clinics or unable to book appointments.

now millions of people are being urged to wait to be called for their jab rather than try and contact the nhs. little wonder that health officials describe the uk's vaccine roll—out programme as the greatest logistical exercise the health service has faced since the war. dominic hughes, bbc news. the headlines on bbc news. the couple who killed arthur labinjo—hughes have beenjailed, his father for 21 years and his partnerfor life in prison for a minimum of 29 years. thejudge said arthur was subjected to the *most unimaginable suffering'. a review of the disorder that marred the euro 2020 final between england and italy injuly has painted a picture of "ticketless, drunken and drugged up thugs" storming wembley and endangering life. the energy regulator ofgem launches a review into the response to storm arwen — as repair works continue, one week on.

we're looking at a packed weekend with the packed fa cup with plenty of other fa cup action on the way too. we're also reflecting on the findings of baroness casey's review into the disturbances at the final of euro 2020 which found a collective failing almost lead to fatalities on the day of the final at wembley. it has been labelled a day of national shame. that is all to come and sports day at 630. next up to come and sports day at 630. next up on bbc news, it is time forfilm review. hello and welcome to the film
5:48 pm
review on bbc news. to take us through this week's cinema releases is mark kermode. so mark, what do we have this week? we have the new film starring joaquin phoenix and we have encountered in which he struggles to save his kids from alien invaders. and silent night, a very unhappy christmas. let's start with kaman. joaquin phoenix has been estranged from the mother, they have to deal with mental health problems and he has a young son named jesse who was very demanding, loves to role—play, which is something he has done packed with his mum. something which is uncle is not yet use to. here's a clip. so, should i call you, like, papa, or dad, orjustjohnny? you can call me whatever
5:49 pm
feels comfortable to you. i don't know, it'sjust, i'm not use to being able to choose. maybe we can just take this process slowly and see how it feels. yeah. and i'm just really sorry that your children died. you know, i don't think i can do that part. yeah, i told you, that's how me and mum do it. yeah, it makes sense for your mum to do that, that's cool. but it doesn't make sense for me. that's what i was explaining to you. why doesn't it make sense for you? because it's ridiculous. is it? it's sad. the question is why do you want to do it? you are just terrible at this. the whole film have that slightly low—key, slightly mumble core field.
5:50 pm
it feels and provides. absolutely. beautifully shot but unintrusive. what happens is at the beginning of the shots, over the course of the movie, they will find a bond, a relationship. he takes them to new york and is quite a lot of them walking around new york that is a similarfeel to walking around new york that is a similar feel to something like manhattan, talking about everything but talking about nothing. and the weird thing about the film is got this cumulative effect, these incidental scenes, this cumulative effect, these incidentalscenes, none this cumulative effect, these incidental scenes, none of which seem to be about very much, all add to something which feels kind of profound. it is a lovely performance byjoaquin phoenix and very recently, he was winning awards for joker, very big performance. but this is completely the other way. everything very low key, everything feels very naturalistic. lovely use of music. an original score and they have things like the san francisco saxophone quartet playing which sounds like it should not work and
5:51 pm
yet somehow, when used in the right context, it's rather beautiful. it is very touching. it feels very incidental. but you come away from it feeling that humanity is basically good. which is a good thing. i liked ita basically good. which is a good thing. i liked it a lot. i was very happy with it. people will say why the black and white was white it was a aesthetic decision that makes things like distance, i know some people have said, does look or i think it looks quite well. why not black and white was? why should be the default? it looks lovely. your second choice for this week. it is a decorated film, turns up in the middle of the night and is taking them on a road trip and since it is not a road trip, it is a rescue mission. he is a decorated marine was now working on this because the earth has been invaded by
5:52 pm
extraterrestrial spores. they take over the host and turn people into basically, it's like invasion of the body stretches. it is a cross between invasion of the body snatchers and a psychological film about father and sons and there's also a family road trip in their and it's an adventure movie. it is written by, michael pearson made beast, work with them and directed it. the really smart thing about it is it starts off in about half an hour through, you think this is a movie about family, this is a movie but a relationship of the sons, his own relationship with the world and there is a film which i'm sure you haven't seen called bold because no one has seen it because it is brilliant. and it would pose a great debt to that film because id is getting under your skin and the whole idea of an extraterrestrial invasion that gets into your bloodstream and the paranoia that would induce, ithink bloodstream and the paranoia that
5:53 pm
would induce, i think it is really remarkable and he is great in this film. he is so tempted. i don't know if it's worthy of his talents. absolutely. that short film, the long goodbye which is eligible for an oscar. very soon, he is great. i think he is very good and it's a great film an encounter is well worth seeing. do not find out too much about it before you see it. the christmas film. it is december you have to have a christmas film. it is a christmas film and a bunch of polish folks arriving in a country house with her own point of christmas together they have their kids. but something is out of whack. the kids are swearing in a way the kids wouldn't do. they're all telling each of the stores that you and expect them to and is starting to behave like there is no tomorrow. here's a clip. simon? sure. where to start? god. god, yes, dear god.

dinner party. fun, everything is there because the end of the world is coming. he was the thing. the writer and director said they were inspired by when the wind blows but also because her kids came back from seeing warhorse and said what would we do that circumstance was back so comment starts out like a christmas movie but the christmas movie goes to hell. and it sounds like an interesting idea but it didn't work it doesn't work for two reasons. the first one is for the first part of it, when it it's a comedy with the irritating posh people, i did not find him funny and i did not believe in them. the second part of it comes apocalypse movie when you're dealing with a lot of very dark material, it did not feel earned. it felt like because we don't believe in these characters you're still doing the knock—about comedy stuff, none of this is earned. that said, i know some people thought this was great. it is an acerbic christmas film, i
5:56 pm
like silent night deadly night, i like silent night deadly night, i like gremlins, as a joke about christmas late, he knows if you've been bad or good and he has an axe. all of that is fine but this does not know how to do the balance between the comp and the horrific. — comic. for me, it doesn't work. 0thers comic. for me, it doesn't work. others think differently but i have watched it twice now and both times it did not work. twice is enough. i gaveit it did not work. twice is enough. i gave it a fair run. best out. please tell me you love and above all things. i love it. and it's light, and i don't mean that in a demeaning way. it is so short and actually, i wanted a demeaning way. it is so short and actually, iwanted more. when actually, i wanted more. when it ended, no, iwanted actually, i wanted more. when it ended, no, i wanted to be a little bit longer. but the reason why it is perfect is because it leaves you wanting more, 72 minutes more i think about life, the world, parents, children. 0n think about life, the world,
5:57 pm
parents, children. on one hand, it is a fairy tale, what actually happened. is it time travelling movie? a ghost story? but it is also a child dealing with grief. i thought, ijust love. ithink a child dealing with grief. i thought, ijust love. i think this is my favourite form of this year and i think he is my favourite director. you're going to work your way through the back catalogue? i am absolutely determined now. it is beautifully determined in these two girls are extraordinary. genius. so clever with child actors and it looks beautiful, wistful but in a very gentle way. i think it is about children dealing with grief and as the main thing that took away from it. but i notice, everyone in the cinema just sat and watched all the credits roll and because we are all just thinking and thinking about that and absorbing it all. and the wonderful use of that tune, the kids and them, which isjust as overwhelmingly great. there is nothing wrong with this film. it is as near to a perfect film as i have ever seen and i am so glad that you loved it. quick final thought about

that. candy man. the new version of candyman reboots the short story, this was co—written byjordan peel and it takes something really new and inventive of the story and i in the good news is we will be back together next week. see you next time. goodbye. hello. the sunniest weather may have beenin hello. the sunniest weather may have been in scotland but it is already turning white or from the west and that rain moving across scotland over the next few hours to northern ireland and that is an area of rain that will push across parts of southern england of the next few hours before clearing the way. showers follow the rain to the northwestern temptress dipping down to mid to low single figures as saturday begins. with an area of
