so that is one strand of the story. in another strand another character is trying to excavate a mass grave in her hometown from the civil war so there are two stories. parallel mothers, parallel stories, personal and political which sounds like a fascinating combination. if you think of the films of guillermo del toro or pans labyrinth, he's managed to do exactly that with the spanish civil war. to do exactly that with the spanish civilwar. it to do exactly that with the spanish civil war. it beautifully designed and beautifully played and a well—written script with great performances and a wonderful score. and it sounds like a perfect match. the problem for me if it is not so much parallel stories, it is tangential stories. you have the spanish civil war story which appears and gets sidelined and you have the personal story which is full of my led genetic contrivance which i meant to buy into because hey it serves the story and then we move back to the spanish civil war so now i have to say i am in the

minority here. most people i have spoken to think this is great. and i am a big fan and love his films but it felt to me like this is not one of his best work. it has some great elements in it and it has some things i will cherish but it did feel like to films and that i said not so much parallels as kind of tangential. not so much parallels as kind of tangential-— not so much parallels as kind of tangential. not so much parallels as kind of tanuential. . ,. ., ., , ., tangential. fascinating. he does not usuall the tangential. fascinating. he does not usually the politics _ tangential. fascinating. he does not usually the politics does _ tangential. fascinating. he does not usually the politics does he? - tangential. fascinating. he does not usually the politics does he? he - tangential. fascinating. he does not usually the politics does he? he hasi usually the politics does he? he has done political _ usually the politics does he? he has done political committee _ usually the politics does he? he has done political committee before - usually the politics does he? he has done political committee before but| done political committee before but it's never really lie in bed for me. but this is a serious work. it is serious and it's very personal and heartfelt. i wish i liked it more than i did. which brings me onto amulet which is a british hurry movie written and directed by mcgarry and this is her directorial debut and the story is an ex soldier from an unnamed european conflict finds himself destitute in london and taken in by a non—in a horror movie which is never a good sign and she says i can give you a house to

stay in but you have to do the house up stay in but you have to do the house up and incidentally in the house is mapped out who is looking after her mother who is a lead in the attic and presence is heard through screaming and banging and there is something deeply, deeply disturbing going on. the film starts with this slow burn atmosphere and then there are a couple of creepy moments with what's going on upstairs and there's a couple of pretty good jump scares and then in the third act goes absolutely full on altered state weird. and i loved it. i thought the performances were great and i thought it was very funny. it's very grounded and it's about gender politics and it's very grounded and they gender wire playing out in the house. you never know what the character's motives really are. radiant soundtrack and is the first film that she has scored. a fantastic soundtrack using human voices and i don't know whether you

nothing to lose! so the boys cast, everyone reese witherspoon, scarlett johansson, jennifer saunders, and bono as a retired rock star who promises that he knows and says he will get him out of retirement to put on the show which he has pitched which he has not written and does not exist which is a sci—fi extravaganza out of this world featuring this retired rock star. so there's a lot of stuff and lots of names and lots of spectacular stuff on screen and it's from elimination and the people that gave us the minions movies. the thing is the first film had a weirdly old—fashioned judy garland mickey rooney lets do they show in a barn kind of feeling and that's what i like about it. this feels like we had a huge success we need to do it bigger and we need to do it out of there and we need to do it more spectacular and as a result it's

kind of lost some of the oddball charm of the original. and ifound myself watching it thinking i was surprised by how much i liked the original because the idea did not sound great at all because it's garthjennings who was an interesting film—maker but in the case of this it's when you say no wonder we have another one it did feel like a numbers game and it's not to say i don't think kids won't enjoy it because there's lots to distract you but what there is not if any of that sense of timelessness or that sense of old—fashioned charm and solid storytelling. it sounds like a weird thing to say about film which features an offence in space but it does not make much emotional sense. it'sjust but it does not make much emotional sense. it's just stuff and a lot of stuff. sense. it's 'ust stuff and a lot of stuff. * , ., . , stuff. bigger is not necessarily better. stuff. bigger is not necessarily better- bigger— stuff. bigger is not necessarily better. bigger and _ stuff. bigger is not necessarily better. bigger and louder - stuff. bigger is not necessarily better. bigger and louder is i stuff. bigger is not necessarilyl better. bigger and louder is not necessarily _ better. bigger and louder is not necessarily better. _ better. bigger and louder is not necessarily better. you - better. bigger and louder is not i necessarily better. you mentioned guillermo del— necessarily better. you mentioned guillermo del toro _ necessarily better. you mentioned guillermo del toro when _ necessarily better. you mentioned guillermo del toro when talking i guillermo del toro when talking about parallel mothers and very

filmed with all these films that were illegal but now they were available but also its about the way which horror cinema and her affection is a place in which you can thank yourself and which is weirdly redeeming and i say this as somebody i'm a big horrorfrom all my life it's lovely to see a film about horror made by somebody who loves horror rather than a film made about her but somebody thinks it's it's disgusting and nasty. it's a smart movie. the performance is great. there is a brilliant performance by michael smiley and i think anybody could find something in this but if you are a age and if you go up with a great nostalgia for a time when things were available in your local video story this will hit the nail on the head.— the nail on the head. thank you for all of that- —

have through the day. it's a mild start for central and southern areas for high pressure into the weekend and low pressure brings gales and for their gills across the north of scotland. the met office had issued an amber warning for scotland all the way down into the edinboro area and and could cause some disruption with the wind gusts in excess of 80 mph across the northeast of scotland. the later finds will sink south and bring a band of cloud but behind it the skies will brighten up and it will be mild in the south but turning colder across the north and the west with sunshine and showers moving in as the area of low pressure sleeps across the north of the uk and it will clear with high pressure on sunday but a new area of pressure on sunday but a new area of pressure will push into scotland later on sunday it's a cold day with a nice quiet start with a touch of frost in rural places but some good spells of sunshine and turn cloudy and wet and windy across the northwest of scotland later in the day and they will be snow over the
