here's ben rich. not quite antarctic called here! but it has been pretty chilly today, some of us has seen some snow, which is featured on the weekend weather menu particularly across parts of scotland, some ice as well but for most it is all about rain, and some brisk winds. the wintry showers we had today will tend to fade through the evening, one or two continuing overnight. much of england and wales will be dry but northern ireland and scotland, cloud working from the west, outbreaks of rain, briefly some snow in scotland, many will see a touch frost. the weekend weather make it as this front which you can follow all the way across the atlantic. a ready source of moisture, lots of rain to come. the front divide in the cold air which will cling on towards the north, from the milder air which will attempt to stage something of a comeback in the south. that front will bring outbreaks of rain

so it's goodbye from me, and on bbc one, we nowjoin the bbc*s news teams where you are. hello and welcome to friday night's sportsday — i'm chetan pathak, coming up on the programme the games begin in beijing — team gb go into the 2022 winter olympics with medal hopes higher than ever: and they say every winter and they say every winter olympics, we've got a huge talent we might have a small team, but we have mighty team. the old rivals meet again but who'll come out on top this time — as scotland face england on the opening weekend of rugby union's six nations can lightning strike twice? as loughborough look to retain their title — we look ahead to the start of the new netball superleague season

and also coming up on the programme before seven. they've won trophies together — but which one of them will be smiling on sunday — when mo salah's egypt take on sadio mane*s senegal and as key figures leave their roles — are more changes needed at the top of england cricket welcome along, thanks forjoining us. as you've been hearing the wait is over, amid a pandemic, continuing criticism of china's alleged human rights abuses and diplomatic boycotts, the 2022 winter olympics are under way in beijing. it was a more restrained opening ceremony but the birds nest stadium, first built for the 2008 summer games, still brought plenty of light and colour.

just a few days into the start of the chinese new year and heralding a new season. almost 3,000 athletes from 91 nations will compete across the winter olympics. beijing is the first city to host both editions of an olympic games with organsiers saying they want it to unite humankind in all its diversity. uk sport believes great britain can win between three to seven medals at these winter olympics — five is the record up until now. the sporting action actually began a couple of days ago and one man that's following everything out there for us is our sports correspondent andy swiss: the olympics might just the olympics mightjust be officially under way, but britain has already seen plenty of action and earlier on, they made it three winds out of four with the mixed event with entry over australia's. it was a real nailbiter. let 6—i

event with entry over australia's. it was a real nailbiter. let 6—1 of the halfway stage but australia limited up at eight on the final end. that meant the match went to an extra end and the british pair held their nerve to win the match 9—8 and they'll be breathing a heavy sigh of relief because i would've been a huge upset but as things stand with three victories out of four, in good shape for a place in the semifinals. tomorrow sees the first full day of competition and brings best hope of the metal in the first weekend with katie in the snowboard slope style, he was due to compete in the last games four years ago but agonisingly on the eve of the games, she broke her heel. she has bounced back in style, winning the overall world cup title 2020 and she will be hoping her 0lympic debut is worth the wait. qualifying takes place tomorrow with the final on sunday. britain's
