and belarusian athletes from competition is figure skating — it's an event russia would've hoped to dominate at the world championships in france later this month. but skating's governing body the isu now says athletes from those two countries won't be invited. it comes just weeks after russia's kamila valieva competed at the winter olympics, despite failing a drugs test. yesterday, football suspended russia from all its international competitions, including the women's euros this summer and the men's world cup. fifa haven't yet announced how the knockout format for this month's qualification play—offs will change with russia now out of the competition. they were due to play poland in the semi—finals, which take place between the 24th and 28th of march. meanwhile, one of russia's best supported club sides has said they're upset by the decision to remove them from the europa league. spartak moscow have been kicked out of the tournament with their last 16 opponents rb leipzig given a bye to the next round. spartak say they hope for a speedy achievement of peace.

ukraine will still be in focus in at least one of the three fa cup fifth round ties taking place this evening. oleksandr zinchenko will start for manchester city in their match at peterborough united. the ukraine international was visibly upset on the pitch ahead of city's match with everton on saturday, but his manager says he's ready to play this evening. elsewhere, another premier league boss has been discussing how one of his ukrainian stars has been coping. david moyes manages andriy yarmalenko at west ham. it isa it is a really difficult situation for us as well. we would like to offer more help and support if we can. but we do not know really what we can do either. the players at the club were great with him yesterday. they tried to get back in and integrate and make sure he felt really welcome and we are all thinking about him. finally, some of ukraine's most high—profile athletes have signalled their intention to return to the country and fight. one of them is the recently retired tennis star sergiy stakhovsky, who reached a career best of number 31 in the world. he's been speaking to the today programme about his feelings

it is about to hit targets in the ukrainian capital kyiv. the russian defence ministry saying quote to prevent information attacks against russia, high precision strikes will be carried out against technological centres of the ukrainian security service and the 72nd main centre in kyiv. we urge ukrainian citizens who are being used by nationalists, this is according to the russian defence ministry, we urge ukrainian citizens used by nationalists to carry out provocations against russia, as well as residents residing near relay stations to leave their homes. the russian defence ministry urging people in the ukrainian capital to leave their homes because of an onslaught about to begin. earlier

the ukrainian president accused russia of committing a war crime by launching a missile strike on the country's second largest city kharkiv. officials say dozens of people died in the attack, many of them civilians. he stressed that the city was a key target for the russian president, vladimir putin, as was the capital, kyiv — which is being advanced on by a massive russian military convoy thought to be 40 miles long. from kyiv, lyse doucet, told us the latest. ukraine's president volodymyr zelensky speaking from kyiv has addressed the european parliament telling european leaders about the fast changing situation in ukraine. he was speaking in brussels, speaking from here as he is still leading the war against russia in ukraine. he told them he was glad they were supporting, united against the russian invasion.

he said he was sure ukraine would ultimately prevail. but the price was high. growing every day. every ukrainian city was blocked, he said, and ukraine was giving its best people to the cause. in other developments, russia's foreign minister sergei lavrov has insisted that russia will continue its invasion of ukraine until it achieves its goals. he called for all american nuclear weapons in europe to be returned to the united states. in other developments, a very ominous one, satellite images have shown a huge russian armoured convoy about 60 kilometres long massed outside the city. and then there is growing concern that it is inching forward. let's look at these pictures from the satellite company. you can see they appear to show armoured vehicles, tanks, artillery and logistical vehicles. the front of the convoy

is said to be less than 30 kilometres from here. in the past 12 hours, there have been attacks on the eastern city of kharkiv, the second largest city in ukraine. i should warn you the images we are about to show you are distressing. kharkiv is a bustling city close to the russian border with a population of 1.5 million people. this here is said to be the regional administrative building being hit close by by a russian cruise missile. ukraine's president zelensky said the heavy bombardment of kharkiv, in which dozens of people are said to have been killed, amounts to a war crime. well, the death toll continues to rise. the united nations says 536 civilians have died in this country so far, but warns there is uncertainty that in the instability of war, the real number is likely to be a much higher.

that was the prime minister answering a question from a ukrainian journalist. as we've heard, russia's foreign minister sergei lavrov has been speaking to the un conference on disarmament in switzerland. he had to address it virtually, due to travel sanctions, but even then a number of delegations walked out when he began. mr lavrov said that the west has been turning a blind eye to so—called injustices in eastern ukraine, where there's been fighting since 2014 in two separatist regions. he added that he hoped leaders would, as he put it, see sense. translation: the west have - shut their eyes, starting from 2013, when the radicals overthrew the legally elected president and started expelling everything russian from the country.
