tomorrow blue skies overnight means tomorrow again will start on a chilly note, with temperatures in rural areas close to freezing, and we could start with some pockets of mist and fog in northern ireland. they won't last long. more cloud in the far north of scotland but otherwise a day like today with lots of sunshine, light winds, some fair weather cloud here and there, not spoiling things, and typical temperatures will be 17 or 18, so warm for the time of year. a reminder, saturday night, sunday morning, the clocks spring forward an hour and we move into british summertime, and we start with high pressure keeping it quiet and dry. there is more cloud in the north sea, and that's getting dragged into the high pressure for the second half of the weekend. four eastern parts of england it might start rather dull and misty on sunday, and that cloud could extent through the midlands into east wales, and a lot of uncertainty about the extent of the club to top it could hang around in areas of the eastern coast of

to the russian invasion of ukraine. former scotland striker ally mccoist thinks there should be no rush in scheduling the fixture. ukraine should be given absolutely every opportunity possible to field a team and play in the game, whenever, wherever they want. really, it's one of the things that clearly it's just scotland playing ukraine in the vast majority, if not all the world will want ukraine to win, even part of me wants ukraine to qualify for the world cup finals but however i think it is said to say it should be corrected they should be given every opportunity as we are all very aware, there are far greater issues in a world cup qualifier going on in the world right now but in all our thoughts are with people of ukraine. that goes without saying. well, another huge result from the qualifiers saw the european champions italy lose to north macedonia, a massive upset by all accounts as the italians fail to make the world cup for the second time running.

italy beating england on penalties to conquer the continent. no—one foresaw this plummet from the summit. it happened because of a series of slips, missed chances across the qualifying campaign and right through last night's playoff. italy didn't lose a game in their qualifying group, but drew four. back home in rome, sympathy is short. at the european championship. there's got to be an overhaul in players, notjust_ as punishment for this failure, but because the cycle - reached an end. i think it's time tojust rip things up and start from scratch. - there's a lot of good there. italy win the world cup for the first time! believe it or not, that was the last time the italians won a knockout tie in a world cup, 2006. how soon they can return to the top is unclear. for this team of extremes, predictions are pointless. patrick gearey, bbc news. so, devastation, then, for the italians, but on the other side of the coin, elation for north macedonia, who are on the verge of history. they're ranked 67th in the world and have been rewarded with a playoff final against portugal. north macedonian football journalist igor aleksandrovich was at the game and thinks his country can now win that crucial tie on tuesday in porto and make a finals for the first time. ican i can say to him that igor is saying

that macedonia will... i already say on my show with the national coach three days before the game, my country, i say, three days before the game, my country, isay, i three days before the game, my country, i say, i already see the world papers and tv stations that he is retiring rinaldo up from the national team. is retiring rinaldo up from the nationalteam. so is retiring rinaldo up from the national team. so i am very close on that. we have now the game, 90 minutes. and you can catch up with more of today's football stories on the football news show, which is available on the bbc iplayer right now. well, england, thankfully perhaps for some fans, aren't involved in any playoff dramas. gareth southgate's side have already sealed their spot in qatar. they face switzerland tomorrow, who've also already qualified, in their first match of the year at wembley.
6:41 pm
it's a friendly it's not too much riding on it. alex howelljoins me in the studio. southgate's been speaking today ahead of the game, and the question of how to handle qatar has come up again. it is come up again and again and all the way through the build—up of the qualifying campaign for england. this week, gareth southgate gave a briefing to the players about 30 minutes in length and gave them information they can pass around a research themselves about the pivotal issues and questions they might be asked about the cut heart world cup in the human rights record there. harry kane also spoke today and said this week he said he will speak to leaders in the changing room and other leaders at international level, so other captains across europe and in his own changing room, and jordan henderson actually said that today. i asked him during a press conference and he said he was going to speak to those leaders at liverpool, so virgil van dijk and andy robertson. and gareth southgate always said he would address this but once the team were qualified for qatar and now they are. these

conversations have been going on a lot longer than we might think. there is power with us being able to do things together or even with some of the other european nations or whatever that might look like. there are conversations going on in the background, so it would be wrong to say that we are pushing thanks to one side. frankly we're talking more about it than many other things, so i agree. i think the players have got a good voice and we should allow them to come up with their ideas, and if we can support that and help shape that, then we should also do that. interesting game with switzerland as they think you're around and look who will be playing where come the world cup at the end of the year but going forward, and glenn have a lot of questions answered but at the back it's not so straightforward. it's not so straightforward in this game is the first international break of this year, a world cup year. so although they are friendly, they are actually important build—up

matches. at the back, he has got trent alexander—arnold pulled out and reese james and luke shaw has not been playing for united. so he has brought us some new players but one of the biggest questions about this english squad is at centre back and it is talking about a lot with harry maguire not playing that well for united. i actually asked eric southgate in the press comes when he announced a squat about harry maguire and whether he had done enough to be in the squad and he said there was no question that he was not going to be in this england squad because he is one of the best in your backs that england half. however that have not stopped him inquiring on other players, he is called in ben white from arsenal who is on the euro squad last year and also the england u21 captain so there is lots going on. it's a world cup year but the one exciting thing for these players, he said anyone who is in the squad is in with a chance in being on the plane to qatar and at those world cup finals.

sunshine and warmth just lately, hasn't it? but all that is set to change over the next few days. i've taken york as an example, but we are going to start to see the temperature trend from above average temperatures to below average temperatures for the time of year through the middle part of the week. so, you really will notice the difference. hopefully you can get out and enjoy the spring sunshine over the weekend. there'll be plenty of it on saturday. as you can see, some of us will see sunshine from dawn till dusk, with some thicker cloud in the far north of scotland, maybe the odd spot or two of light rain into the northern isles. there will be a little bit more of a brisk breeze, particularly running down through channel coasts, but also coming in off the north sea. so, here, those temperatures may be a little bit subdued in comparison to the last few days. sheltered western areas will see the best of the warmth, highs of 18 degrees. and don't forget, when you're off to bed saturday night into the early hours of sunday morning, we put the clocks forward. yes, it's the start of british summer time on sunday. so, we lose an hour in bed,

but hopefully we'll gain some daylight hours. as you can see, the high pressure is still with us. there could be a little bit of stubborn cloud drifting in off the north sea, though, on sunday, and that could be a bit of a nuisance across england and wales. a level of uncertainty how far west that cloud is going to feed in, but it could just suppress the temperatures a little bit here. so, the best of any warmth and sunshine is likely to be further west. underneath that cloud, we're likely to see temperatures down a degree or so in comparison to of late. but the high pressure still stays with us. we have got this little front on monday starting to move in from the far north—east, and that's just going to enhance the risk of some showers. so, first thing on monday, there's perhaps a greater chance of seeing more low cloud, some stubborn mist and fog in the morning. a few showers across north wales and northern england as well. to the north of that, it's going to start to turn a little bit cooler, 6—11 degrees. to the south of that, with some sunshine, we still keep some warmth. but the trend for this cooler feel arrives really from tuesday onwards
