western parts of wales and could bring some snow to the hills of temperature, probably not really making inroads. maybe a few flakes for the moors in the south—west, particularly bodmin. otherwise, showers across eastern england turning back to snow overnight, some localised accumulations under widespread frost are setting us up for an icy start on saturday. saturday is another day where we will see plenty of showers building as the day goes by. again, some of them starting off wintry but tending to reign as the day goes by. the wind is not quite as strong as it has been in the last couple of days so temperatures are still below par for the time of year but probably won't feel quite as bitter as it has donein won't feel quite as bitter as it has done in recent days. on sunday, we are looking at a frosty start but it should be a lovely morning with plenty of april sunshine. however, cloud will develop and tend to spread across the sky and then we have a weather front moving into the north—west which will bring some rain to scotland and northern ireland before the end of the day with strengthening winds as well. temperatures will be coming up a bit, highs of around ten or ii, and

then a quick look ahead to next week. for many of us, we will see some milder air push in but the cold air has not entirely gone away, nor the risk of snow. we could still see some snow into next week across particularly the hills of scotland but often for the rest of the uk we are looking at a lot of cloud and outbreaks of rain and temperatures coming back into double figures so no where near as cold as it has been over the last couple of days. that's it, so goodbye from me. now on bbc one, time for the news where you are, have a very good evening. hello, and welcome to sportsday — i'm sarah mulkerrins. coming up... the driver for bob's biggest prize has been made in qatar the driver for bob's biggest prize has been made in qatar with

the driver for bob's biggest prize has been made in qatar with england and gareth southgate finding out their fate. and gareth southgate finding out theirfate. it may well include facing either wales or scotland. that is if either of those teams make it to the final edition of the world cup qualifier. we'll be live in doha to react to the draw and talk about the issues that have mired this world cup since qatar was awarded the hosting rights 12 years ago. also coming up in the programme... we'll look ahead to one of the most siginificant old firm derbies for years — rangers host celtic at ibrox with the visitors three points clear at the top. and international cricket will return to yorkshire, that's following changes at the club in the aftermath of the azeem rafiq racism scandal. you're very welcome along

to sportsday this evening. there's only one place to start — and that's with the draw for football's world cup in qatar. the balls have been drawn from the pots in doha in the last hour, and the teams competing now know their opponents and potential pathway to success. let's go live to doha, the bbc*s sports editor dan roan is there for us. this is how it sounds at the moment for england. this will be their group. group b. they are going to face iran, usa and then tantalizingly we have this ua for playoff spot, which could potentially include wales, who we know have qualified for the player final and will face either scotland or ukraine. we know that that semi has been postponed with the events in ukraine. so we will wait and see what that could be wales or scotland there in the world cup later this year. let's get all the reaction i live from doha. because our sports

editor is there for us. dan, let's talk about this potential matchup of england possibly facing wales or scotland. ~ , ,., , , england possibly facing wales or scotland. ~ , , , *, scotland. absolutely. yes. it's the headfine scotland. absolutely. yes. it's the headline news _ scotland. absolutely. yes. it's the headline news to _ scotland. absolutely. yes. it's the headline news to emerge - scotland. absolutely. yes. it's the headline news to emerge here - scotland. absolutely. yes. it's the| headline news to emerge here this evening at doha after all of the usual wits and grandma that tend to accompany these occasions. i think that's the big news, that we could have a tantalising prospect of an all british affair at the world cup, which kicked off of course for the first time later this year because, as you have been saying in group b, not on the england, but also the winner of this european playoff, and we know that if scotland can prevail against ukraine when they play later this year, a match of course that has been delayed because of russia's invasion of ukraine, there will be that british match on november 29, i think it is, but of course, we wouldn't know yet until later
6:35 pm
whether it will be wales or scotland, who knows? maybe ukraine will prevail and they will have huge amounts of support for obvious reasons as well. it wouldn't be fascinating if gareth southgate two men come up against their counterparts from either wales or scotland for what would be the very first time at a world cup finals, it really would be a huge occasion, but also alongside england and whoever comes to that playoff system would be iran and the united states of america, so intriguing group, really, of countries are all kinds of reasons and you have to say, sarah, it is a really kind dry as well for england. they were quite fortunate in the last world cup i seem to recall and gareth southgate's luck seems to continue, because it could've been a lot worse, big teams like germany and the netherlands were lurking in the second group, england could've had them and they avoided them. instead they got the united states of america who are ranked 16th in the
6:36 pm
world, on the croatia ranks lower than them and that second part of seeds, and iran who england have never played in a world cup final, but this is a team who have never actually qualified from the group stage of a world cup, so i'm sure southgate will be breathing a huge sigh of relief. he spoken about his belief that this could be england's year after reaching the semi finals last time in russia and then the final of course of the euros last summer. i don't think that draw could've been much betterfor england. could've been much better for encland. , , *, england. absolutely. let's get some reaction now — england. absolutely. let's get some reaction now from _ england. absolutely. let's get some reaction now from the _ england. absolutely. let's get some reaction now from the wales - england. absolutely. let's get some reaction now from the wales and - reaction now from the wales and scotland camps. this hasjust come into the bbc in the last few minutes stopping no disrespect to anyone, all the teams are good, especially with england in the group. it especially with england in the u-rou. u, * especially with england in the u-rou. * , .,, especially with england in the ”rou, * , .,, ., group. it could've been a bit more dauntin: group. it could've been a bit more daunting than _ group. it could've been a bit more daunting than the _ group. it could've been a bit more daunting than the one _ group. it could've been a bit more daunting than the one that - group. it could've been a bit more daunting than the one that we - daunting than the one that we potentially would go into, so, yeah, quite _ potentially would go into, so, yeah, quite happy. but a lot of work to do before _ quite happy. but a lot of work to do before then. we quite happy. but a lot of work to do

tantalising, a fascinating draw more broadly as well if you look at the likes of group e for example, where spain, germany and japan are all in. that's a really tough group. france, they are in group d, brazil have a tough group as well. it will be interesting to see if they can emerge from that. the opening match, we should mention as well, it will be ecuador on november the 21st, and that's the opening match day, and i think also the day that england play their opening game against iran. really interesting to talk about the draw and how that will go. i know we are going to bring up a graphic in a moment which will show up the groups. we will talk through that. but obviously a big talking point of this world cup since qatar was awarded the hosting rights back in 2010 where all the controversies of this tournament has been and will be mired in. ~ ,,., , ~' mired in. absolutely. i think the organisers _ mired in. absolutely. i think the organisers are _ mired in. absolutely. i think the organisers are really _ mired in. absolutely. i think the organisers are really hoping - mired in. absolutely. i think the| organisers are really hoping that they significant moment, this

milestone finally helps shift the focus towards the competition and the football. now teams can see their potential route to the final and get excited as we are about the potential fixtures. there's and get excited as we are about the potentialfixtures. there's no getting away from the fact that that controversy continues to this event. i don't really see that the ending anytime soon. the scrutiny is going to continue, we have seen that play out in recent days, for example, yesterday, here, the new president of the norwegian football association stood up and spoke out saying that the consequences of what she called an unacceptable decision to stage the world cup here are also unacceptable as she put it, forcing some defensive comments from the organisers and from fee five act. there will be continued pressure on them both —— fee five. when it comes to the treatment of migrant workers, more transparency over workers staff, compensation for bereaved families, guarantees that the role changes and reforms will in fact to be implemented after the world cup

is over. and we come to the other big area of controversy, discrimination, women's rights, and the fact that homosexuality is illegal here. i will some fans be treated? will they feel ready to come close a number of action groups and pressure groups have been speaking out about the fact that they don't think enough has been done when it comes to equality, inclusivity, so i think the next few months will be interesting to see if there will be any more done. no doubt over the last 12 years since that incredible vote back in 2010 to give this country the world cup has been continuing with controversy and i think despite today's draw, as they say, that will continue in the coming weeks and months. joining us five from the — coming weeks and months. joining us five from the bbc _ coming weeks and months. joining us five from the bbc sports _ editor there. let's have a quick look at this draw in fall. all the groups outlined there. some very interesting groups. group c, argentina, mexico, poland. and

hello, there. it will get cold again tonight, as most of today's showers fade away. we've got some wetter weather moving away from western scotland, still some showers for northern ireland into the night, and some wetter weather comes into wales and the far southwest, with some snow over the hills. but a more widespread frost, i think, across scotland and for much of england, a few icy patches, as well — nowhere near as cold as last night, though, for northern ireland, nor indeed for wales. and here, we'll see the back of that wet weather fairly quickly in the morning, and then, a fair bit of sunshine for a while. the cloud will bubble up again, we'll see a few more scattered showers developing — not as heavy, not as many as today, most of them for england and wales. much of scotland, northern ireland likely to be dry, temperatures a degree or two higher than they were this afternoon. second half the weekend, again, starts cold and frosty, increasing cloud for scotland and northern ireland, rain from the north.
