this is bbc news — welcome if you're watching here in the uk or around the globe. our top stories: russia says it's hit a weapons factory in kyiv that produces anti—ship and air—defence missiles. it comes after ukraine's claim that its missiles hit a russian flagship — which sank yesterday. ukraine says not all of the 500 crew were successfully rescued. more than 150 palestinians are injured in clashes with israeli police atjerusalem's holy site. almost 400 people are confirmed to have died in floods in kwazulu—natal province in south africa. authorities say it's the wost flooding in decades, and they have warned that weather is due to deteriorate again.

from the sands of nevada to england's greenest hill, sculptures from the burning man festival find a temporary new home. hello and welcome if you have just joined us. the russian defence ministry has warned it will intensify attacks around the ukraine capital, kyiv, after accusing ukraine of targeting russian border towns. moscow says its sea—based cruise missiles have struck a factory outside kyiv which produces anti—ship missiles, including the type which, according to ukraine, hit russia's flagship, the moskva. the ship eventually sunk. ukraine's coastguard now says the russians did not, after all, manage to evacuate all 500 crew. from lviv in western ukraine,
5:02 pm
danjohnson, sent this report. once again, ukrainians shelter in fear of aerial attack and this in fear of aerial attack. russia says it targeted a military facility. a russian defence spokesman warned there would be more strikes on kyiv and released these pictures of missile launches from the black sea. russia presumably wants to show its firepower is not diminished despite the sinking of its black sea flagship. it says moskva went down in rough seas, being towed to port after a fire on board. there has been no comment on ukrainian claims of a successful missile strike. this is a tremendous victory for ukraine, even if they did not directly contribute to the sinking, and it is an enormous defeat for russia because it indicates the russian armed forces simply aren't up to snuff in terms of modern military capabilities. the ship was seen in the black sea only a few days ago. a presidential visit on deck a few years back shows russia's pride in the missile cruiser and the embarrassment of its loss.
5:03 pm
ukraine's president referred to it in his address on the 50th night of the war. translation: ukraine is defended by our people, all our people, - those who stop the advance of endless columns of russian equipment, those who rebuff constant attacks in donbas, those who have shown that russian ships can go only to the bottom. the moskva already appears on stamps as a symbol of ukrainian defiance. it has become a popular resistance image after ukrainian soldiers on a black sea island refused to surrender and told the ship firmly to go away. now its propaganda value is even greater. translation: it is a symbol of this war for people who are suffering - and fighting in the battle zones. for them, it is inspiring. it is the motto of the war. it is kind of a symbol of ukrainian resistance. russia's biggest military warship and it has the name, moskva, i
5:04 pm
very symbolic, right? it is a boost to ukrainian morale, but there are fears the sinking will have rattled russia and may mean even more aggression. let's go live now to anna foster who's in kozarovychi, north of kyiv. shejoins us now. what do she joins us now. what do we know about this attack on what the russian claim was a missile production facility? we russian claim was a missile production facility? we have seen throu~hout production facility? we have seen throughout this _ production facility? we have seen throughout this conflict _ production facility? we have seen throughout this conflict russia - throughout this conflict russia attack areas and facilities that it says are being used by the ukrainian military, so with this case, they have said it was a building where missiles were being produced, anti—aircraft and anti—ship missiles. we believe that there were three strokes overnight on this particular facility. three strokes overnight on this particularfacility. it three strokes overnight on this particular facility. it would seem to tally with the idea that russia wanted to perhaps strike back after its flag ship was sunk yesterday.
5:05 pm
there is something of course symbolic of the sim mixing of that ship, but also something symbolic about targeting key. remember, the russians are targeting various areas across the east of the country, mariupol, continually, this like kharkiv, the donbas region. he knows if it targets kyiv, then it does get a set amount of attention, so people have focused on that. i have been out here in kyiv today, and even though it is still a city which is only getting back to normal very slowly, still a city of checkpoints, many, many places here closed after the inhabitants fled, there are people out here on the streets today, it has been a beautiful sunny day, i have seen some restaurants, some cafe is open, so even though we saw this perhaps new aggression from russia overnight, people here do seemed the mac seem to want to try and get their lives back to normal or some normality.— and get their lives back to normal or some normality. orthodox easter falls next weekend, _ or some normality. orthodox easter falls next weekend, but _ or some normality. orthodox easter falls next weekend, but the - or some normality. orthodox easter| falls next weekend, but the western churches are celebrating this weekend. to get a sense that people
5:06 pm
are trying to, as far as they can, to look ahead, at a time when because a living in the middle of a war, merely day—to—day survival is often the best one can hope for? mentally or you can prepare yourself for? 0r mentally or you can prepare yourself for? or it is. whether you are in this country, whether you are in kyiv, across in the west, you see what is happening to your countrymen and women. people every day, the hearing president zelenskyy make his nightly address, they are seeing images of devastation from the east of the country. images of devastation from the east of the country-— of the country. even though the war miaht not of the country. even though the war might not physically _ of the country. even though the war might not physically be _ of the country. even though the war might not physically be on - of the country. even though the war might not physically be on their - might not physically be on their doorstep, it is something that they are constantly living with. those stories that we hear from those places under constant bombardment, the places that people are still trying to escape from, flee from, in those humanitarian corridors, which are being set up on quite a small scale, every day, you hear stories that the people are telling and in some cases, they have tried to stay
5:07 pm
where they are. they have given it a few weeks, they have been sheltering, been under bombardment, and finally, they decide that the only thing they can do for the safety of them and their children is to move. i think you're right. is that people are always reassessing. always reconsidering what situation is, in what would be the best and safest course of action for them. there is talk about the russian aspect of this. —— lets us talk. distress obviously for the families of those men who may not have got off the moskva, but there must be pride in the military capacity in russia to lose in this way. a lot of attention has been focused on the idea that president putin wants something to celebrate on victory day. in moscow, next month. 0ur day. in moscow, next month. our people getting anxious in kyiv that may be in the next couple of weeks, they could become particularly difficult for ukraine? i
5:08 pm
they could become particularly difficult for ukraine?— difficult for ukraine? i think in k iv, it difficult for ukraine? i think in kyiv. it is _ difficult for ukraine? i think in kyiv. it is a — difficult for ukraine? i think in kyiv, it is a different - difficult for ukraine? i think in kyiv, it is a different sort - difficult for ukraine? i think in kyiv, it is a different sort of. kyiv, it is a different sort of situation to the rest of the country because this place has remained, certainly the centre of kyiv, remained relatively unscathed. yes in the towns and villages around here that have been under russian occupation, those names that we now know so well, places where i have been over the last week or so. and the devastation is, in some places total. people's lives have been destroyed. i think here in the centre of kyiv, it is easy to see that, to feel perhaps, to a degree, removed from it, but people who live in the city, they know that there is that symbolic importance attached to a capital. certainly, you're right when you see russia will really have been seriously displeased with what happened with the moskva, it is theirflagship, ukraine is not known for its might, at sea, that is
5:09 pm
something that russia really feel that it something that russia really feel thatitis something that russia really feel that it is and should be dominant at. to do something like this and to have succeeded in taking out the russian flagship, have succeeded in taking out the russianflagship, rememberthat have succeeded in taking out the russian flagship, remember that it's a ship which is famous, here in ukraine, after it approached snake island and asking it inhabitants to surrender and was told where to go. there is even a stamp, people have been queueing here in kyiv to buy the stamp of the russian warship that was sunk yesterday. 0ur the stamp of the russian warship that was sunk yesterday. our long queues just down at the post office, people wanting to buy these emotive stamps, so all of that wraps up at this symbolism. if you are president putin, looking at this from moscow, you can imagine how it would make him very angry, the way that this has been, in many ways, a small ukrainian victory. i has been, in many ways, a small ukrainian victory.— has been, in many ways, a small ukrainian victory. i wonder if they are putting _ ukrainian victory. i wonder if they are putting on — ukrainian victory. i wonder if they are putting on any _ ukrainian victory. i wonder if they are putting on any of _ ukrainian victory. i wonder if they are putting on any of the - are putting on any of the happy easter because they will send to friends and relatives in russia. anna foster in kyiv, i know you get around a lot, sorry that i got the
5:10 pm
place wrong. thank you for reporting live from the capital today. just on what we were saying about the moskva flagship, was remembering that 20 odd years ago president peter went through a sticky patch over the sinking of another russian submarine, it was felt that he had not done enough, he had been on holiday and ignored the office set offers from britain and norway to rescue the submariners. 109 submariners died then. it might become a little bit, therefore, of a patriotic environment —— apartment perhaps will present putin. —— patriotic embarrassment. russia is reported to have warned the united states of unpredictable consequences, if washington and its nato allies continue to arm ukraine. the washington post says it's seen a diplomatic note in which moscow complains that the deployment of the most sensitive weapons systems is fuelling the conflict.
5:11 pm
0ur correspondentjenny hill in moscow was asked whether she could confirm the report. there is nothing there that i can confirm for you from here, i'm afraid, but it is certainly true that moscow is very unhappy about the amount of weapons being supplied by the west to ukraine and i have been watching some state television talk shows today and presenters and pundits there are raging about that particular issue and i think it's also worth pointing out that ukraine, of course, is cast as the aggressor in this conflict here in moscow by vladimir putin, who insists he has only gone itself against the aggression of ukraine but the us and nato is quite clearly the other enemy too here and we hear frequently from the kremlin and from officials throughout this government about the danger which the us represents to russia, so for example, a very common narrative here is the us is trying to help ukraine develop biological weapons for use against russia
5:12 pm
or that it is trying to help ukraine to require nuclear weapons. we heard just a few days ago from the foreign minister, sergei lavrov, who actually said that one of the aims of this so—called special military operation was to prevent america from gaining world dominance, so set in that context, it doesn't surprise me at all that we are hearing this report, although as i say, it's not something that we can confirm here. andrii 0sadchuk is a member of the ukrainian parliament under the pro—european holos party. he believes ukraine cannot manage without support from the west. the question is very simple. if the west. providing that, the russian side will start burning ukraine. if you think that they will stop at ukraine, it is a big mistake. everyone in the west will now understand that they will move further, so that is why all western leaders, the majority, will agree that it can be a long war, and this
5:13 pm
war shall be finished in ukrainian soil, so that's why, as we see now, the west is ready to help us, as long as it will be needed, and this increasing support is very much welcome. south african authorities say almost 400 people are now known to have died during severe floods in kwazulu—natal province — described as the worst in decades. the provincial premier said almost 41 thousand people have been affected around the city of durban. the police, army and volunteer rescuers are widening their search for those still missing. south african ministers and officials have been inspecting 0ur correspondent has been following the convoy and has the latest from durban. government ministers have been shown the utter devastation that has befallen this particular province. i was following the minister of transport, who took a helicopter ride around durban, and he basically witnessed a lot of the devastation
5:14 pm
on the south of durban, which is a township over there, and it was quite actually disconcerting to see a number of containers strewed along the road and that is just part of the damage that we saw in that particular township. quite relieving though for some people who live here, the minister for human settlements to did announce the people that lost their houses and had their houses damaged will receive some form of financial assistance from the state, so some people have been rather pleased with that particular development but the rebuilding process in general is going to be monumental now. as you can see behind me, this is an informal settlement that was essentially washed away. parts of it was washed away. i was speaking to residents here, who were distraught. one woman was showing me her particular house, which is just down over there, and she was standing there just looking quite destitute and not knowing what she is going to be
5:15 pm
doing next and that is just a number of the harrowing stories that i have been hearing today. and there are searches still going on around durban for people who have been reported missing? presumably, the longer it goes without anyone being found, the more fear that that death toll figure isjust going to keep rising? yes, absolutely. the numbers are climbing towards 400s right now and i was speaking to residents of this very community and they were saying that a gentleman, whose house was nearby here as well is still missing and they don't know where he is. another woman was telling me that a couple of bodies were found earlier today down this particular river, so these stories are coming out and it is just an indication of the loss of life that took place over here in durban, and quite worryingly, the weather is not improving. the south african weather service has announced that there is going to be a significant amount of rain overnight and from tomorrow as well, so it is more bad news for the people of durban.
5:16 pm
it certainly is. there was a correspondent talking to me a little bit earlier. china is beginning military exercises around taiwan. an army spokesman said they were directed at what he called the "wrong signal" being sent about the island by the united states. the exercises coincide with a bipartisan visit by six us lawmakers to taipei. the biden administration has repeatedly talked of its "rock—solid" commitment to taiwan. but china regards the self—governing island as an integral part of its territory and a foreign ministry spokesman has condemned the us support for taiwan. democrat senator bob menendez is among those visiting taipei — he spoke about the international importance of taiwan. we are here to support taiwan, our relationship is rock—solid, and when a country like taiwan has 90% of the high end semiconductor industry, it is a country of global significance,
