and finally it's back to football. in the 1930s, they arrived in southampton on a boat carrying 4,000 child refugees fleeing the spanish civil war. little did they know, but for two teenage boys, the tragedy of war would set them on their way to a career as professional footballers — first at southampton and later in spain with the likes of athletic club bilbao and real madrid. lewis coombes has the remarkable story of the children of 37. behind these happy pictures i of the spanish refugee children arriving in southampton lies the grim tragedy of nearly. a year of civil war. 4,000 basque children separated from theirfamilies. sent to southampton as german and italian forces bombed their homes at the invitation of general franco. they would become as the children of war. these children have found safety.

among the children, was sabino baranaga and raimundo lezama, both 1a at the time. after the camp, where did the children go next? the children were sent to colonies. this man was part of the child basque association. this is now a block of flats, but it was the sight of nazareth house, which was an orphanage. no coincidence. it's about half a mile. sabino baranaga and raimundo lezama found solace in football, and it was not long until they were integrated into saints' youth system. the gates opened and the players were training under the manager tom parker. before you knew it, they had been reserves, and one was a goalkeeper, the other was a centre forward to scored lots of goals.

sabino baranaga caught the eye, scoring before returning to the basque country at the end of the spanish civil war. but a football star had been born. sabino went on to score nearly 100 goals for real madrid, including the very first at the famous stadium. a fact his family continue to be proud of. translation: sabino loved england. it is where he was taught to play football. everything would have been completely different. he may not have survived. and if he had stayed in spain, he wouldn't have been able to concentrate on his football as he would have had to look after his family. and it was the fact that someone saw him at southampton and recommended him to real madrid that his life changed again. raimundo lezama played in goal

for saints on three occasions before joining athletic club. he played a key role in winning the spanish cup final against sabino's madrid side, just three years after they had left the southampton orphanage. more than a dozen young boys who arrived in 1937 went on to play football professionally, and achievement is now remembered in an exhibition at athletic club's stadium that ensures that the children of 37 continues to be told. while in southampton, a plaque marks the part of the city played in the lives of the children of war. all the more important with the recent refugee crisis and war is going on at the moment to remember how children and how refugees in general can be perceived, and the role that football can play in that as well. sabino baranaga and raimundo lezama proving that we all have a chance to write our own history, no matter what party
