i'm viktoria zhuhan, i work as a journalist for bbc in ukraine. i don't normally cover eurovision, especially when there is a war raging in my country. but kalush orchestra isn't an ordinary, typical eurovision contestant. but after following the kalush orchestra for ten days, i've learned that, for them, this is much more than a singing competition. it's a way to tell the world about the war that's destroying ukraine. we are on our way to a rehearsal in the north of the country. oleh, in the pink hat, the group's front man finds it hard to take in what he sees.

the song has taken on a whole new meaning, a war cry for the motherland. she sings in ukrainian soldiers on the front line have been recording their own versions.
9:41 pm
before we left kalush, oleh took me to the easter service. even the local priest gave his support. oleh's roots are the key to understanding the lyrics of the song, but it's tima's connection with the ukrainian folk music that inspired the tune. tima and his mum svitlana show me their family heirlooms.
9:42 pm
traditional clothes like these have been part of ukraine's identity for hundreds of years. it is something the russian invasion has been trying to wipe out and something the band say they want to protect.

hello and welcome to a look at weather for the week ahead as we approach the end of may, the end of the meteorological spring. march was dry for the whole of the uk, aprilfor england and wales, but may at the moment has been around average rainfall—wise. mind you, we could do with some more, and we will see some rain in the forecast this week, particularly the first half of the week, with a particularly windy spell — for this time of year, at least — on wednesday. and from monday,
9:54 pm
it's a two—pronged attack. the low pressure that's been with us throughout the weekend is drifting into the north sea, so providing showers, and another area of low pressure is drifting up from france, bringing some outbreaks of rain. so an unsettled—looking picture, really. the uncertainty lies in how far north and west the rain will come as it drifts up from france. there will be some heavy bursts in there as well. some of the showers in the north during the day could be accompanied by the odd rumble of thunder as well. but one thing we'll notice is it will be cooler because of the changing wind direction, coming down from the west or the northwest, several degrees down on those of sunday, particularly in the south. now, that area of low pressure, then, is expected to drift northwards, so bringing rain with it across eastern areas through the night monday and into tuesday as well, just hanging around, giving another showery day in these areas, the northwesterly breeze keeping things cool. and there will be showers further west as well, with a fairly unstable atmosphere around here. 16—18, so around the average for the time of year. it will still feel warm outside the breeze and outside those
9:55 pm
showers, because it is late may. then into wednesday, when i said we are going to have probably the windiest spell of the week, as this next area of low pressure comes in, it doesn't look like it will be a wash—out with rain, but it does look as if the north could have a good dollop of rain here. and there will be some in southern areas, itjust turns more showery. it's a breezy day, though — gusts of 30—a0 mph, which, as i say, is more than we'd normally see at this time of year. so, tempering the feel of things, 11—18 the high. then we approach the mid part, or the latter part, of the week, with a ridge of high pressure, the azores high starting to influence southern areas once again. but still, our weather fronts are crossing parts of scotland and northern ireland, so rather more cloud here. and because it's moist and warm air coming around that high, we could have some fog issues as well further south, especially first thing in the morning. but it does mean, with more sunshine here, temperatures are starting to creep up again, but held down with more cloud, more breeze and some patchy rain in the north, which will still be around as we go into friday. these weather fronts meandering across scotland
9:56 pm
and northern ireland, just pushing in some patchy rain from time to time. it doesn't look as if it'll be heavy rain for most, butjust a bit drizzly and dreary for many, introducing more cloud into northern parts of england and wales as well. but where the sunshine breaks through, into the low 20s, into the teens further north, and obviously it's going to remain quite mild by night. then into next weekend, that high pressure looks set to become established across the uk, pushing northwards. but as it does, it may well, then, into the early part of next week, introduce this cooler northerly or northeasterly feed off the north sea which will introduce a few more showers as well. so it's not plain sailing. yes, we'll see that slightly warmer air drifting northwards, but then if we do pick up that northerly, we're obviously going to cool things down again. but it is the end of may, the sun is still strong, so if the sun comes out, it'll feel warm enough. it is just the temperatures won't be getting that high. it does look as if next week in and beyond, it turns
9:57 pm
a little drier, little warmer, but showers, as i say, cannot be ruled out. as ever, there is more in the website.

the full report into downing street lockdown parties is to be released in the next few days. a deadline for objections from those named has now passed — paving the way for civil servant sue gray's findings to be published. the pm has always said that sue gray can take the report to wherever the evidence takes her. it'll come as pressure grows for government action on rising prices — one energy boss says many more households are heading into fuel poverty. also tonight: the devastation caused by the war in ukraine and the russians willing to take the risk of speaking out. as of tomorrow, a new temporary timetable will cut
