as we start to pick up northerly winds, it will start to turn cooler and by sunday we could even see some showers in the forecast as well, so i think saturday is looking like being the driest day of the weekend. you can see why, our area of high pressure is drifting northwards allowing these northerly winds to dig down, pushing down across the country, which will also spark off some showers. saturday the best, driest day. 20 degrees in the south. as we head into sunday, it will be more cloudy and cool it with scattered showers, more cloudy and cool it with scattered showers, particularly more cloudy and cool it with scattered showers, particularly in the east. thank you very much. that's all from the bbc news at six so it's goodbye from me and on bbc one we nowjoin the bbc*s news teams where you are.

hello and welcome to sportsday. good evening. welcome to the programme. tonight, we're exploring fan disorder and violence within football. just this week, the england boss gareth southgate felt compelled to address the recent spate of pitch—invasions and violence at matches. describing it as a national embarrassment. so what has prompted this reaction. and how significant is the problem? well, let's take you back to the euros last summer. the final, when 2000 ticketless fans stormed wembley. described in a government review as a "perfect storm of lawlessness" — that seemed to just the the beginnig of what was a season of fan disorder. and the stats prove it. figures released injanuary showed that in the first half of the season there had been 802 football related
6:34 pm
arrests, up nearly 50% from the previous season. incidents involving flares, missiles and hate crime were up too by 36%. and this has consequences, sheffield united's billy sharp needed stitches after he was attacked by a nottingham forest fan after they beat united in a championship play—off final. the fan has since been jailed. and when everton sealed their premier league survival, crystal palace manager patrick viera was involved in an altercation with a fan during yet another pitch invasion. just last weekend, after manchester city clinched the title, villa keeper robin 0lsen was assaulted as fans invaded the pitch there. joining me now for more on thsi is our sports news correspondent, laura scott. laura there's no doubting there is a serious issue here. have football authorities control? there is a serious issue here.
6:35 pm
some there is a serious issue here. people think perhaps perhaps some people think perhaps they have, perhaps social unrest is just a football issue but a nationwide issue. but quite clearly, there is a problem here with pitch invasions resin disorder at football that needs tackling the summer. quite why this is this is happening is perhaps a combination of factors. it could be to do with the post covid—19 feeling of everyone is back in football, forgotten how to behave. her abscess and the do with brexit. perhaps the euros final was a flashpoint that led to this deterioration and fan behaviour. perhaps it's the home office said earlier this week of a process to deal with fries and cocaine use. perhaps alcohol. but i think most likely is it's a combination of all of these things. spoke to the chief executive of the footballers association and he said he thinks it's driven by a feeling of impunity
6:36 pm
among fans there forgotten that the pitch is for players in the stands were spectators and it's a criminal offence to go onto the pitch and preps the media have a role to end it is up to us and the rest of the media not to celebrate pitch invasions to make it clear that it is a criminal offence. but when i spoke earlier, how concerning is it for players and this is what he had to say. i for players and this is what he had to sa . ~ . , ., to say. i think, at the big game, particularly _ to say. i think, at the big game, particularly involving _ to say. i think, at the big game, particularly involving certain - particularly involving certain reactions, especially if it's a positive _ reactions, especially if it's a positive outcome and thin, the concern — positive outcome and thin, the concern that maybe be there's enough preventative measures taking place by the _ preventative measures taking place by the people may need to make sure they're _ by the people may need to make sure they're safe _ by the people may need to make sure they're safe at work and what they're — they're safe at work and what they're asking is, why is this happening and what have we learned and will _ happening and what have we learned and will be _ happening and what have we learned and will be can do better going forward — and will be can do better going forward. as a question notjust of looking _ forward. as a question notjust of looking back, but looking and what

6:38 pm
what are realistic solutions that they can tackle and that might be reductions and if you remove the first few rows, they can make it harder. perhaps you bring in the grills that you see at wembley that make pitch invasions harder more police could be an option, more stewarding to be an option as well and clearly, there measures to impose sanctions on cocaine use for home office saying the football banning orders would be increased for possession or supplying of cocaine. and just back to that interview i did, the pfa have written with an impact statement highlighting that very real impact that pitch invasions have in place, the feeling of being vulnerable when they're surrounded by fans and cannot see an exit point. it says it clear notjust cannot see an exit point. it says it clear not just that cannot see an exit point. it says it clear notjust that pitch invasions are a criminal offence but there will be punished consistently. the feelinu
