11:00 am
this is bbc news. these are the latest headlines in the uk and around the world. platinum jubilee celebrations enter their third day, and it's party time at the palace. it's derby day at the races but the queen won't be there — only the third time ever the monarch will miss the event. filmed at home at sandringham in april, these previously unseen clips were released to mark thejubilee celebrations. in other news, travel disruption continues, airlines cancel more flights this morning and rail passengers are being warned of delays because of strikes by conductors. an investigation begins after a train derails in southern germany — leaving at least four people dead.
11:01 am
hello and welcome if you're watching in the uk or around the world. welcome to bbc news. a special concert will take place tonight at buckingham palace, as a weekend ofjubilee celebrations continues, to give thanks to the queen for her 70—year reign. 22,000 people will gather for the platinum party at the palace, when the prince of wales and the duke of cambridge will pay tribute to the queen for her enduring service. the derby at epsom also takes place afternoon but the queen will not attend. instead, she's expected to watch the event on television from windsor castle. would you like another one? the queen's love of horses is well known. these pictures were filmed earlier this year, at the royal stud. however, she won't be attending the epsom derby later today, but will watch
11:02 am
on the television instead. just as she watched yesterday's national service of thanksgiving at st paul's cathedral. her mobility issues prevented her being there in person to hear the thanks for a lifetime dedicated to faith and public service. her family were there, however, including her grandson and his wife, prince harry and meghan, making their first appearance at a royal event for two years. whatever had been said in the past, this was a time for the family to come together. it was the duke and duchess of cambridge and the prince of wales and the duchess of cornwall who processed through the cathedral to represent the monarch and lead the thanksgiving. there was an appropriately equine theme to the archbishop of york's sermon. we are sorry that you are not here with us this morning, but we are so glad that you are still in the saddle and we are glad that there is still more to come.
11:03 am
on thursday, the mall was full of thousands and thousands of people here to watch the dazzling military parade. on friday, there was the poignant and reflective service of thanksgiving. this weekend is all about dancing, music and lunch. perhaps watching the weekend weather forecast, the partying has already got under way in parts of the uk, including here in glasgow. thousands morejubilee lunches, pageants and parties will take place today and tomorrow. and tonight, this huge set, built in front of buckingham palace, will see the likes of duran duran, queen and diana ross taking to any one of the four stages. also expected to give their thanks to their mother and grandmother, prince charles and prince william, who will take their seats in the royal box for the platinum party at the palace.
11:04 am
let's head to the mall. good morning. yes, from the mall, where it is periodically very noisy. i should perhaps explain that the reason we are not allowed any closer to the palace is because, as you might expect, there are rehearsals and sound checks today for the big party tonight. it is not until 8pm, but periodically, we have heard some judges were already, i think i am allowed to say that. —— george ezra. there are hundreds of people streaming down their overtime. they are getting a decent enough view of the rehearsals and they are certainly hearing it very well indeed. and those are some very patient peace people because they have got hours to wait until the

concert tonight. the focus is at the derby, we will talk more about that. events up and down the country over the course of the weekend as well. we are going to try and talk to our royal correspondent, sarah campbell, who has justjoined royal correspondent, sarah campbell, who hasjustjoined me here, where we are all suffering but we are going to endeavour to try and talk to each other. the focus here in london and elsewhere but let's reflect on the queen, first of course, because that is what these four days all about. couldn't be happy thanksgiving service yesterday, and now, not attending one of her really very favourite events. * , ., . ., one of her really very favourite events. * , ., _, , * events. it's quite a record, isn't it? she has _ events. it's quite a record, isn't it? she has only _ events. it's quite a record, isn't it? she has only not _ events. it's quite a record, isn't it? she has only not attended l events. it's quite a record, isn't| it? she has only not attended at derby day twice in her long reign, in 1952. so, it is not the official platinumjubilee programme, you can see it is a dating her it clearly,
11:06 am
the news after trooping the colour, we saw her on the balcony twice, she was beaming, she was interacting, some really lovely pictures of her and her great grandson, louis, but at the end of the day, it emerged that despite what these pictures showed, she was suffering from some discomfort. we have that news on thursday evening that she wasn't going to be able to attend the national service of thanksgiving that was held yesterday at st paul's cathedral. when you think of the queen and the fact that the faith is very important to her, that would have been an environment —— a very important engagement for her to attend. anything that requires a long journey, travel, isjust meaning that her advisers are saying it is just too much. meaning that her advisers are saying it isjust too much. and so, she won't be there today. butjust as she watched the service of thanksgiving on the television yesterday, and there were some lovely little allusions to her love
11:07 am
of horses by the archbishop of york. today, she is expected to be watching the epsom derby from home in windsor, so at least you won't have to suffer. fix, in windsor, so at least you won't have to suffer.— have to suffer. a quick thought about harry — have to suffer. a quick thought about harry and _ have to suffer. a quick thought about harry and meghan, - have to suffer. a quick thought i about harry and meghan, because have to suffer. a quick thought - about harry and meghan, because it is their daughter's first birthday today, people might be aware and there has been a note to that from there has been a note to that from the formal quarters, certainly on twitter. , , ~ ., twitter. yes, indeed. the duke and duchess of — twitter. yes, indeed. the duke and duchess of cambridge _ twitter. yes, indeed. the duke and duchess of cambridge have - twitter. yes, indeed. the duke and duchess of cambridge have wished | twitter. yes, indeed. the duke and i duchess of cambridge have wished her a happy first birthday, as has prince charles on social media. so, much has been made over the last couple of years since their move to north america, the interview with 0prah north america, the interview with oprah winfrey, thoughts with them that things weren't happy within the windsor household, so i guess people will be seeing this as a nice gesture from one to the other. people were looking very closely at the service yesterday to see if there was any interaction between prince harry and meghan, and i think
11:08 am
it was very carefully choreographed, they arrived earlier than his brother and father, the left at a different time, and they sat far enough apart but there wasn't really any indication of any interaction between them. i think people were looking very carefully but that wasn't going to happen. they did not go to the guild hall reception straight after the service, which is where most of the royal family has gone to. again, that would have been a time that we could see maybe relations were better perhaps, so we have not been able to draw any conclusions from anything because the pictures simply haven't been there. ., ~' ,, , . the pictures simply haven't been there. . ~ ,, , . , there. thank you very much. plenty more to come _ there. thank you very much. plenty more to come today _ there. thank you very much. plenty more to come today and _ there. thank you very much. plenty more to come today and tomorrow. j more to come today and tomorrow. this is the third day of four days of commemorations of the queen's 70 years on the throne. i have mentioned the huge number of people who are already turning appear for the big party tonight. diana ross, the big party tonight. diana ross, the headliner of course. george

ezra, duran duran, queen, rod stewart and much more besides. we will be talking about the music on the line up a little bit later today he on bbc news. we have got a music critic to come to join us later to give us his thoughts on that line this evening. 0ur man, john maguire, as he does these days, he has been out and about. i haven't even banned in yes, i haven't had a chance. he is somewhere around here and he has been chatting to those people who have been turning up very early because they want a good spot to the concert tonight. let's hear who he has been chatting to. down on the mall, as you can see, the crowds are really building, if you are with us earlier on. so many more people than were here earlier. i wanted to come and say hello to these guys because we cut them short last time. hello, how are you? how are you getting on? good. you got your hair done like that where? oh, you know, ijust bought this little number.
11:10 am
it is my own hair. and again, of these people that were friends. well, that your husband. but you guys all met, what, ten years ago? no, we've probably known each other 20 years, roughly. but you had been to a previous royal occasion? yes, we came to the diamond jubilee ten years ago, which was incredible. and you thought you would come back? yes. and what has it been made so far? just amazing. so many people from all over the world, great atmospheres, and peoplejust reaching out and talking to each other, which after covid, we never thought was going to happen again. yes, that's a good point, isn't it? thanks so much. lovely to see you. see you later. that's a really good point that you know, things have been a little bit grim over the last couple of years. excuse me, don't worry. and it'sjust wonderful to... hello, good morning. doing a greatjob, fellas. how are we? look at these two here. you were talking about memorabilia and people doing things in previous years. this is you too, isn't it? can we see that? ten years ago at the diamond jubilee. with your 2012 sunglasses on, and this year, we have got what? london landmarks. london landmarks, yes. what's it like here in amongst the crowd with your fantastic union jack tents?
11:11 am
it is amazing. the atmosphere is already building up. it's great. and it's really nice to be able to get back together. especially after the last couple of years that we've all had, just to be able to celebrate. and looking forward to the music tonight? 0h, absolutely, yeah. who are you particularly keen to see? ed sheeran, probably. enjoy yourselves, stay warm. right, another one of these connections we've been telling you about, international connections. hello! are these two here. from cornwall and from connecticut. they met... excuse me, i'm just going to dive in here. you met when, you two? we met in, i can't remember what year but when william and kate got married. i think that was probably about ten or 11 years ago. 11 years ago. yes, they just had their anniversary. cornwall, connecticut, and stayed in contact ever since? we have, on and off through the internet, and then, came over one year for the queen's 90th in windsor and she had a walkabout and she came right up
11:12 am
to us and we just keep in touch with each other's families and christmas cards and stuff like that, and when we knew the days were set for this, we said we are going. book it in. amazing to make friendships like this, isn't it? itjust shows, and today, i have just met somebody, whose father was best friends with my father. he was sitting just a year. he is standing just there. that's fantastic. that's amazing. it is a small world. that wasjohn that was john maguire. just that wasjohn maguire. just while we were listening tojohn, we've had an update from the metropolitan police. we are just hearing the last few moments that he met are saying they have evacuated trafalgar square, not too far from here, have evacuated trafalgar square, not too farfrom here, behind have evacuated trafalgar square, not too far from here, behind from where our camera position is. that is all we are hearing at the moment but the mets are saying to people, if you're
11:13 am
thinking of coming down here for the concert tonight, they are saying please avoid the area. we are obviously trying to get some more specifics on this, partly how do you define this area? we are trying to find out whether tube stations will be affected in that area, bus routes, people are streaming down the mall here and they have been all morning. 0bviously, just starting to one of the little bit here, people want to be here, they wanted to get a good spot for the concert, which doesn't start until 8pm. so, we know more that —— we know it no more than that. as i can see behind, it is a sea of people. the mall is full. as you would expect. here we are on a four—day weekend. so, the police are saying please avoid the area. i will try to get more specifics for you and that's because if you are thinking of coming to the area, we really need to know exactly what
11:14 am
that means, which a specific part of london is affected. there are other tube stations that you can use, of course. we don't know the reason why that has been evacuated. 0bviously, that has been evacuated. obviously, there will be huge security in place. it is such a massive event tonight. huge security for the whole four days of celebrations, of course. that's as much as we know so far from the metropolitan police but we will keep you up—to—date on that. certainly, if you're thinking on coming down here that concert this evening, it goes without saying for sure now, please do check everything you can before you set out. please do check your routes because if one part of london gets cut off, that puts enormous pressure on other areas and other tube stations, so please do check before you leave. we will keep an eye on that for you. it is not all about london, but of course there was going to be a lot of focus on the capital tonight because of this enormous party and concert here this evening. you can watch it on bbc if you would like to

they were creating problems in terms of the volume of passengers in the airport. they created guidelines of come 2.5 hours early for short haul and 3.5 hours early for long haul. if you do, you will be put in an area. they have redeployed staff to create more security lanes being open at the peak times. nothing dramatic stop quite basic stuff but it has worked. 50. dramatic stop quite basic stuff but it has worked.— dramatic stop quite basic stuff but it has worked. so, do you think they have nailed — it has worked. so, do you think they have nailed it? _ it has worked. so, do you think they have nailed it? do _ it has worked. so, do you think they have nailed it? do you _ it has worked. so, do you think they have nailed it? do you think - it has worked. so, do you think they have nailed it? do you think this - have nailed it? do you think this will hold, particularly as we get to summer. i will hold, particularly as we get to summer. ~' will hold, particularly as we get to summer. ~ ,., ~ ., summer. i think so. i think what we're looking — summer. i think so. i think what we're looking at _ summer. i think so. i think what we're looking at and _ summer. i think so. i think what we're looking at and the - summer. i think so. i think whatl we're looking at and the situation with easyjet and other airlines cancelling flights and airports across europe, it's really the consequence of the post—pandemic lockdown. all of these organisations had to get rid of staff because of the lockdown for the most part was for two years, and now they are coming back to full operation, they are struggling to get staff because we are pretty much at full

employment at this country. that is a problem. we then have a change in consumer booking patterns, partially down to things like ukraine because all of the inflationary and cost of living increases has made the consumer wary about booking too far in advance, so there is a late booking pattern happening this year and that is impacting the airlines and that is impacting the airlines and the airports and the handling agent at the airports, so i'm not in any way trying to excuse how difficult and traumatic it had been for the passengers, whose flights had been cancelled, or anybody who has missed flights, but the reality is, it is a resourcing issue and it is, it is a resourcing issue and it is a consumer booking change that it is a consumer booking change that it is impacting and we are never going to be able to simply flick a switch and restart an entire sector. thank ou. rail passengers are being warned of significant disruption to services this weekend because of a strike by conductors. members of the rmt union at transpennine express will walk out today and tomorrow in a long—running pay dispute.

i think it's important - to celebrate these events and especially this one, _ the platinum, because i don't think we will ever see the like again. it has just been brilliant. we werejust saying, we don't think anything like this has happened here for decades, it's absolutely brilliant, we have loved it. i want to do it every week. it isjust a really nice opportunity, isn't it, for everybody to come together and celebrate. i mean, a remarkable achievement for her majesty the queen to achieve 70 years on the throne. it's once in a blue moon. and you won't see a queen doing 70 years again, i guess _
