that its forces have withdrawn from the city of lysychansk in eastern ukraine. the city has until now been the last ukrainian stronghold in luhansk, which is a part of the industrial donbas region that russia is focusing its military power on. there are reports of russian fighters in lysychansk city centre and russia is claiming control over the entire luhansk region. ukraine's military command said that any "continuation of the defence of lysychansk would have lead to fatal consequences so a decision was made to withdraw." our correspondent sarah rainsford is monitoring the situation from kyiv. here was her assessment a short time ago. this is a key moment and you don't normally get the defence minister telling they have taken the region unless that is the situation on the ground. there has been heavy shelling beyond the luhansk region, and the donetsk

region. the hotel i was an when this began has now been destroyed. russia is accusing ukraine missiles into russian territory. in a chortle time, the fragments then killed civilians on the ground in russia. ukraine has denied that, though. let's get more on what the these developments might mean. drjenny mathers is a senior lecturer at the department of international politics at aberystwyth university in wales and an expert on russian politics and security. she says the battle for the donbas is not yet over. the bigger picture is that russia's progress has been incredibly slow, and if you consider it from the point of view of its original aims, which was to take control of all of ukraine, you know, there aims are pretty much exposed as completely baseless. there are more possible strategic value to be had in taking further control, as i mentioned, along the black sea coast, and it's possible they may
9:14 pm
try for that. so, yes, it's again for russia in the short term, but, i mean, the ukrainians are incredibly determined, and they are getting more and more support from the west. you know, just last week, from the nato summit, for example, more and more pledges. so, i don't think they're ready to give up by any stretch. with all those factors considered, where could this conflict go next? i think the next weeks and potentially the next months, even, we are probably going to see more of the same. quite a slow, steady battle for control over territory, sort of a pushing back and forth, some gains on one side, some gains on the other side. you know, the big question is whether ultimately ukraine will have enough capability to halt that forward movement and to start pushing back in significant areas in the donbas, as they have pushed back elsewhere. ukraine's ambassador to turkey says local customs officials have seized a russian cargo ship carrying what it says is plundered ukrainian grain. earlier, ukraine's
9:15 pm
prosecutor—general asked ankara to detain the ship, currently anchored off a turkish port, east of istanbul. the kremlin says it's not theft but rather export of goods from territory it controls. kyiv is hoping forensic analysis will prove the grain has been plundered. russia's foreign minister sergey lavrov said he believes that the uk is trying to find grounds and create conditions for the uk's royal navy to enter the black sea and lead the process of releasing grainfrom ukraine. translation: this food crisis is being used - for a variety of purposes — not only for propaganda, but to clear ukraine's name and, once again, blame everything on moscow. but if you listen to, for example, borisjohnson and his foreign secretary, they're clearly trying to create conditions to find pretext for the royal navy to infiltrate the black sea and begin sort of leading the entire process

of releasing grain from the ports, which have been mined by the ukrainians and which the ukrainians are bound to de—mine. earlier, i spoke to onur erem from bbc turkish and i asked him what he knows about the ship, the zhibek zholy, and why it's been seized. it is russian—flagged, it's owned by a kazakh company and it's chartered to a russian company. the bbc investigation found out that it shut down its transponders in the end of last month in the sea of asov, and then it got its load from the ukrainian town of berdyansk, which is under russian occupation. this ship came to turkey on friday, on the 1st ofjuly, and we know that this ship is carrying 7000 tonnes of grain thanks to a telegram post of russian appointed governor of the region, yevhen balytskyi, so the ukrainian authorities made this application for turkey to seize it. they claim that the grain
9:17 pm
is stolen from ukrainians, and turkish authorities are investigating the situation now. today, the ukrainian ambassador to ankara told that he expects a decision on monday. they want the ship to be confiscated, but there are other options, as well. turkey can reject the ship, and it may go to another port, possibly to syria, as other ships have been suspected of going to. ok, so, turkey has responded to that request from ukraine to detain the ship because they say the grain on it is stolen from ukraine, but what is russia saying about the grain that is on the ship? russia rejects this claim, and they argue that this is a regular and legal trade, but we know that there have been other instances, as well, when ukrainians, especially farmers, they accuse russian soldiers of stealing their grain, or being forced to sell them for one third of the market price.
9:18 pm
so, this is what the accusations are based on, and if turkey refuses ukraine's application, then the ship may be free again, but if turkey accepts it then it may need to confiscate, and maybe give the ship back to ukraine. at least six people have died after a section of glacier fell onto a group of mountaineers in the italian alps. eight others were injured in the incident on the slopes of marmolada in the dolomites. the area has seen unusually hot weather in recent days. local officials say around 15 hikers were in the area at the time, and there are fears the death toll may rise. helicopters and dogs are searching the area for survivors. tens of thousands of people have been told to leave their homes in sydney following torrential rain and flash flooding in australia's largest city. up to 35 centimetres of rain have hit certain areas.

johnson is facing fresh questions about how much he knew when he appointed chris pincher as deputy chief whip in february after a series of fresh allegations about his behaviour emerged. the tamworth mp resigned from the government on thursday, after he was accused of groping two men in a private members' club the night before. here's our political correspondent damian grammaticas. for borisjohnson, new scrutiny about his decision to appoint chris pincher, one of his most loyal supporters, to the powerful post of deputy chief whip. mr pincher resigned that post after the events here at the carlton club on wednesday, accused of publicly groping two men. he said he had drunk far too much and embarrassed himself and others. this weekend has brought six more allegations. all are denied by mr pincher. three are that he made similar unwanted advances to fellow mps, one in a bar in parliament, one in his private office. in february, when mr pincher
9:24 pm
was made whip, one of those mps contacted downing street to relay his concerns. downing street has said that at the time, borisjohnson was not aware of any specific allegations, something repeated by a minister today. so how can you be sure that he didn't know about the allegations? well, i'm saying that i've been informed this morning he did not know about specific allegations, as has been well reported. people who spoke to him on friday and in agreement with the chief whip, the whip was removed from chris pincher, who, by the way, is now under a formal investigation process. and it's important that process is allowed to happen. so i'm still not clear, who has told you that the prime minister, and who has told you with certainty the prime minister didn't know about the allegations? somebody from the number 10 press office. so the number 10 press office says categorically that he didn't know about them? well, as i say, i've been, as usual, one gets briefed on a wide variety of topics when you come onto a show like this today, and that's what i've been informed.
9:25 pm
dominic cummings, former aide, now bitter critic of mrjohnson, has weighed in, saying long before appointing mr pincher, mrjohnson had laughingly referred to him as "pincher by name, pincher by nature." asked if that was true, downing street has remained silent. no denial issued. i don't think they've taken these things seriously. i think they've made decisions which they shouldn't have made. i can't believe some of the things that are in the papers today about what the prime minister may have personally been aware of before he made decisions like this. but all of politics suffers. for his part, mr pincher has this weekend said, chris pincher has made clear he does not intend to resign from parliament but has agreed to stay away while the independent investigation happens. meanwhile, borisjohnson'sjudgment and the culture he oversees are both once again being questioned. damian grammaticas, bbc news.
