9:10 pm
and it is a testament to the power of love when all else is lost.
9:11 pm
is it fair to say from the moment you saw him you felt something special? bucha is only 30 kilometres from kyiv. a growing commuter town. and at its heart is yablunska street.
9:12 pm
on this street a glassware factory helped create a thriving community in soviet days.
9:13 pm
new flats were being built for young couples creating theirfuture in bucha.
9:14 pm
for decades, bucha had known peace. archive: nato says it's the biggest deployment of russian troops in belarus since the cold war... even when tensions started mounting on ukraine's borders, for yulia and andriy, invasion seemed far away.
9:15 pm
suddenly, the russians had landed, trying to take the capital, kyiv. elite airborne forces staged a surprise attack, just five kilometres
9:16 pm
from yablunska street. across bucha, residents sought
9:17 pm
shelter underground. they filmed what was happening, as they would throughout the unfolding crisis.
9:18 pm
natalia and her son fled west to safety, joining hundreds of thousands of ukrainians in the face of the russian advance. her husband, andriy, was to follow. across ukraine, peoplejoined the territorial defence, a reserve military unit defending neighbourhoods.
9:19 pm
natalia's husband joined a defence unit formed around friends and neighbours on yablunska street. yulia's husband, the delivery driver andriy dvornikov, was the only one with army experience. alongside him, his close friend and father of two, denys, a mechanic at a local garage.
9:20 pm
taxi driver ivan skyba also joined the unit.
9:21 pm
but the situation was about to change. a bucha resident heard a menacing sound. a convoy of russians had broken into bucha, trying to get to kyiv. but they were moving towards disaster. the ukrainian army launched ambushes.
9:22 pm
when the shelling stopped, ludmilla went outside. and found carnage. battered, the russians retreated, but not far. they were being held by ukrainian forces a few kilometres away. the territorial defence was operating checkpoints,
9:23 pm
among them, the men of yablunska street, helping their neighbours. it seemed as if the danger was over. that morning, local officials even celebrated bucha's liberation.
9:24 pm
but nearby, the enemy was on the move. on the afternoon of march 3rd, the russians were back and on yablunska street. hiding behind windows, some residents capture the moment.
9:25 pm
9:26 pm
unbeknown to the men's families, the russians had advanced towards the yablunska street checkpoint. ivan was on duty when the attack began.
9:27 pm
outnumbered and outgunned, the men sought shelter in a house at 31 yablunska street. the nine men abandoned their small supply of weapons and agreed that if caught, they would claim to be builders sheltering from the fighting.
9:28 pm
that morning, russian troops had broken into the house and arrested nine men. a local resident was filming as the russian forces gathered across the street, then, he saw
9:29 pm
something that troubled him.
9:30 pm
the men had been brought to yablunska street 144, an abandoned office, now the russian base in occupied bucha. ivan and the other men were forced to crouch with their heads under this bar. according to ivan, they singled out one man and shot him, to intimidate the others. it worked. one man confessed, telling the russians they were all part of the territorial defence.
9:31 pm
worse was coming. natalia's husband, andriy verbovy, was taken inside the building with ivan. the russians believed some locals were tipping off ukrainian artillery about their positions and they were still
9:32 pm
being fired on. that day, all along yablunska street, they rounded up residents, taking them to the new base to check their identities. a woman named lucy was among them. while we were coming, we saw nearly ten people lying on the ground. one of them was covered with some tissue, i guess that he was dead already. some of them, they were lying with their knees bent a little bit. they were a crowd of people very close to each other. we could see some traces of some injuries on their bodies but they were lying immovable. waiting outside the base with her two teenage daughters, lucy was given a warning by one of the troops. i was terrified by the phrase
9:33 pm
of one of the soldiers who told us put some caps on your daughters* heads because what they will see will stay in their minds forever. after about two hours, lucy says she and the other residents were sent home. the detained men were now alone with the russians. one of the commanders told us, don't look at those people lying on the ground. they are not humans. they are absolute dirt. they are beasts. for one month, bucha lay under russian occupation,
9:34 pm
with only brief humanitarian corridors for those wanting to flee. the rest of the time, escape meant risking death. rapid gunfire those left behind trapped, without power, living amid constant fighting. bucha became a place
9:35 pm
of the missing. bell tolling
9:36 pm
9:37 pm
after a month, ukraine's army forced the russians out. news archive: more horrors of the war in ukraine... nightmare vision of residential buildings... horrible things- are being revealed... one man who is lying on the ground, who was on a bicycle... bucha's secrets were finally being revealed.
9:38 pm
now the searching began. at yablunska 144, residents entered the deserted russian base. images started appearing online.
9:39 pm
in the courtyard of yablunska i44, the bodies of eight men had been found. the images of death difficult to watch. they had been lying there for four weeks, surrounded by rubbish, but authorities moved the bodies before families could identify them.
9:40 pm
9:41 pm
9:42 pm
9:43 pm
the truth of what happened at yablunska i44 might have stayed hidden forever. but for the testimony of a man who came back from the dead. ivan skyba has a terrible story to tell. from that moment, when alongside natalia's husband, andriy verbovy, he was forced inside the russian base.
9:44 pm
ivan recalls being brought back outside to his comrades.
9:45 pm
ivan says he was taken with several others to a courtyard beside the building. among them, katarina's son, denys rudenko, and olha's husband, anatoliy prykhidko.
9:46 pm
ivan was alive. but the danger wasn't over. after about 15 minutes, the killers left.
9:47 pm
ivan had survived. a few days later, he managed to reunite with his wife and four children, and left for safety in poland. i'm just wondering, what do you feel now after surviving this?
9:48 pm
yablunska 144 is now a war crime scene. investigators are gathering evidence for a potential prosecution, answering a call forjustice. but who were the people responsible? this military credit card found by cleaners,
9:49 pm
and other recovered documents, place elite airborne forces at yablunska i44 around this time. but the man who sent them there was the commander—in—chief, vladimir putin. and, as he has often done before, the president denies any crimes.
9:50 pm
would you like some water? the events at yablunska i44 transformed life into death. happy homes into places of grief. but bucha is still home. where the reminders of the lost are everywhere.
9:51 pm

9:53 pm
what were the last flowers he gave you, can you remember?

9:55 pm
hello there. we had some big weather contrasts across the uk on saturday. western areas kept the thickest of the cloud, with outbreaks of rain, particularly in the northwest. some of the cloud was quite low with some mist in cornwall. but across southeast england and the hampshire area we had lots of sunshine and it was another warm day, another dry day as well. and that's been one of the features of the weather forjuly. you see, there's barely been a drop of rain. southern wales, southern counties of england, eastern england too, indeed, in parts of hampshire, there hasn't been anything really measurable rain—wise so far this month. and indeed, although there is some rain in the forecast, the majority of it is across north—western areas,
9:56 pm
there'll be little, if any, rain reaching parts of east anglia and south east england over the next few days, where it has been particularly dry. now, on saturday we did have some pulses of rain. the rain turned quite heavy towards the end of the day across western scotland and the area of low pressure responsible will continue to feed up some pretty soupy air. it's going to be quite humid to take us into sunday. some very high temperatures on the cards for eastern areas of england, although not near those records that we set on tuesday. across the north and west, though, we've got the rain. now, the rains can be quite heavy at times for northern ireland, western areas of scotland. they'll probably be a pulse of rain crossing wales, perhaps reaching the north midlands, the peaks and the pennines for a time in the afternoon. so the south east of that is dry with some warm spells of sunshine. indeed, actually, temperatures will be higher than they were on saturday across the board. quite a big jump up in temperatures in aberdeen, but the hottest weather will be across east anglia where we're looking at highs of up to 30 degrees celsius. sunday evening and overnight, well, we're going to continue those
9:57 pm
south—westerly winds for a time across england and wales, a little bit of rain, but nothing particularly towards east anglia and south east england. we'll get some further pulses of rain for scotland and northern ireland, but here we're going to start to get north—westerly winds feeding in, and those north westerly winds are as a result of this area of low pressure slowly transferring eastwards. the north—westers will start to drop the temperatures a little bit as we go through monday. now, there is still a bit of rain in the forecast. it looks like it could be quite a wet start to the day in northern scotland and maybe some of that rain just skirting down into northeast england too. otherwise, a few showers around, quite a bit of dry weather with some sunshine and temperatures down. generally high teens for scotland and northern ireland, still into the 20s for england and wales and still quite warm across east anglia in the south east of england at 25, but not as hot as it has been. now, taking a look beyond that, through the rest of the week, high pressure is going to be in charge, i think day by day we'll notice those temperatures tending to rise. but there will be some low pressure systems working towards the north
9:58 pm
west of the country, threatening rain at times. tuesday's weather, well, by and large a drier kind of day with a little bit more in the way of sunshine through the morning. cloud then develops into the afternoon, few showers into the north—west of the uk and temperatures quite near average really about 18 for scotland and northern ireland, perhaps a little bit below, but 23 in london isn't far off what we should see at this time of the year. and with high pressure hanging on across parts of england, wales, should stay dry and bright in newcastle. scotland and northern ireland, always having thicker cloud and there will be some rain around, particularly towards the end of the week. the rule of thumb is the further south you come, the drier the weather gets. and with that area of high pressure holding across wales, the midlands, east anglia and southern england, essentially it's a dry week, and those temperatures will be climbing, it will become very warm, if not hot, towards the end of the week, that's your latest weather. bye for now.
