but one or two spots under clear skies in scotland and northern ireland. an area of rain in northern england, northern ireland, southern scotland, pushing northwards. a cloudy day again for thursday. but any sunshine will be limited to the far south—east, any sunshine will be limited to the farsouth—east, perhaps any sunshine will be limited to the far south—east, perhaps north west scotland as well. temperatures up a little, 23 in the south, a little warmer through scotland as well. it looks like the showers will clear the midlands, so by the evening it looks like it will be fine and dry and quite mild for the opening ceremony in birmingham. as we head into friday, looks like we will see this area of low pressure start to move into the north and west. this is a feature that will bring some fairly substantial range of the north—west, very little getting into the south—east. i think friday looks a brighter day, less cloud around generally. we should see more sunshine that into the afternoon, the temperatures rise and set off a few scattered showers fostered it will be a warmer day, 27 or 28 in the south—east, 2i will be a warmer day, 27 or 28 in the south—east, 21 for the central belt of scotland and also 21 in

well, yes. we saw the players returning from sheffield earlier today, gavin, and they looked in high spirits. they were waving to the fans who gathered here to welcome them back and we saw the jubilant celebrations that they had on the pitch last night but we've put that one side because it's really back to business today and those didn't play against sweden were doing recovery sessions today. those who did play, those who didn't play been back in training because they knowjust how important the next few days will be and we understand that they will be watching the second semifinal tonight between germany and france tonight between germany and france to find out who they will be playing on sunday. outside of this bubble in south—west london there was a huge swell of support around the nation for this team and a feeling that this tournament could be transformative. earlier, ispoke this tournament could be transformative. earlier, i spoke to the women in charge of women's football at the fa and asked her what it would mean if the lionesses could win on sunday?
6:36 pm
i think it would be a landmark moment, as far as i'm concerned, for women in sport, for women's football, but probably most importantly for the players. it would grow a confidence in our system, in a structure. i think if we were to be successful on sunday i think it would be a landmark moment in the development of the women's game and, even if we don't, i think we've made massive strides through the tournament and the players should take the greatest credit for what they've done in the way they conducted themselves. the impact sarina wiegman has had on the belief in the squad, the way they are playing with such confidence but also resilience, how impressive even by what sarina wiegman has brought to the squadyes, enormousl . wiegman has brought to the squadyes, enormously- she _ wiegman has brought to the squadyes, enormously. she is _ wiegman has brought to the squadyes, enormously. she is not _ wiegman has brought to the squadyes, enormously. she is notjust _ wiegman has brought to the squadyes, enormously. she is notjust a _ wiegman has brought to the squadyes, enormously. she is notjust a great - enormously. she is notjust a great coach, she is a great human being. she spends really good time with

people, very honest, very direct but she has built a collective sense of togetherness notjust of the players but the team around the players which is absolutely very, very special. i've not seen anything like it in all my time in sports and i think, you know, she is quite a remarkable leader and a very special person and were extremely lucky to have her. it person and were extremely lucky to have her. , , ., , ., have her. it is ten years to the day since london _ have her. it is ten years to the day since london 2012 _ have her. it is ten years to the day since london 2012 began - have her. it is ten years to the day since london 2012 began and - have her. it is ten years to the day since london 2012 began and the l since london 2012 began and the legacy was already being hotly debated and there is a real sense that the same year as a impact that it has already had it really needs to be harnessed, whether that's in the provision of school football for girls are making a more diverse talent pool upright to the pathway. the fa are confident that they will harness the legacy of this tournament but they do acknowledge that there are challenges that still exist. last night's match had a peak

television audience of 9.3 million with a further 2 million in livestreams on sunday's could eclipse out and make it the largest ever television audience and his wembley said to be sell—out and that would make it the biggest attendance at any errors match for the men over women as england's lionesses try to do something they've never done before. gavin. thank you laura. well a win for the lionesses could be an absolute game—changer for girls playing football in england. over the last decade, the women's super league has taken the game to new heights — with teams going professional and the world's best players now over here. faye white was england captain back in that 2009 final loss— she told me england's success has been long in the making... players who were in the squad when i was, i remember playing against lucy bronze as well in fa cup games as a

then we see that's about going into schools and young children can play football from a young age and then everyone gets the opportunity, not just a select few. so, as laura mentioned, england will meet france or germany in the final at wembley this weekend. both sides with plenty of pedigree at the top of women's world football. ben croucher is in milton keynes for us ahead of that semi—final this evening. ben. music is pumping already, fans started filling up the stadium and there is nothing really to choose between germany and france and they have been impressive so far in this tournament, germany have four games, four wins, tournament, germany have four games, fourwins, no tournament, germany have four games, four wins, no goals conceded and 31—year—old striker alex yee scored in every single game so far. for

games, four goals, some more spectacular than others but the germany they do have a concern in that their young influential winger ball has came out with covid and the rest of the squad is unaffected but as for france in the domestic game the is generally and are tightened but internationally they had not really turned it on before and this is their first european semifinal. they drew with iceland in the group stages where they change their team and then it came to the last eight the holders the netherlands they have 33 shots on goal and needed an extra time penalty to see them into night's semifinals. stephen warnock, the former liverpool defender is commencing on the game for radio five live. i had an early how he saw the game going. we thought that last niuht game going. we thought that last ni . ht with game going. we thought that last night with england _ game going. we thought that last night with england and _ game going. we thought that last night with england and sweden i game going. we thought that last l night with england and sweden that they were two evenly matched teams but then we saw one team dominate. england will be more confident going into the game is the history within

the competition and i think fans will be a little bit nervous having been the first and they've been in the situation heading to the semifinals but we know the quality of that attack on the speed that they've got, that the germans have been probably a little bit more clinical in front of goal. without conceding a goal that is the chan lunge for france tonight to try and break the deadlock. fiut lunge for france tonight to try and break the deadlock.— lunge for france tonight to try and break the deadlock. out of these two teams, if break the deadlock. out of these two teams. if you — break the deadlock. out of these two teams, if you think _ break the deadlock. out of these two teams, if you think england - break the deadlock. out of these two teams, if you think england would i teams, if you think england would prefer to face and a final on sunday? i prefer to face and a final on sunda ? ~ prefer to face and a final on sunday?— prefer to face and a final on sunda ? ~' ., , ., , sunday? i think we look at germany in the history _ sunday? i think we look at germany in the history within _ sunday? i think we look at germany in the history within the _ in the history within the competition i don't think you'd really want to face them. i think because of the continuity within the team as well a loss of the players playing in the german league so then they know each other inside out —— a lot of the players. if you look at the french there has been a little bit of unrest in the camp. when you look at the forward line it is quick and exciting but there are vulnerabilities on the fence and possibly the french but they lionesses won't care. they are in the final and they will fancy whoever they come up against. so plenty for germany and france to fear potentially in that final come

sunday but the way england played last night, they are going to be full of confidence and just a quick word as well on the spectators we have got the rail strike today and many thousands have already filled up many thousands have already filled up the stadium and we are expecting and watch a team that is in england and watch a team that is in england and that is almost unheard of in women's football and that has been a beating this competition. it is kept in women's football and that has been a beating this competition. it is captioner nation, men, women, boys and girls regardless of who is playing and that final at wembley on sunday. england are concerned what the fence to join them —— will be france or germany tojoin the fence to join them —— will be france or germany to join then? let's have a quick look at some of the other stories making the headlines today... the 6 to i on favourite — baaeed — continued his remarkable unbeaten run, cruising to victory
