league, growing participation numbers, landmark sponsorship deals, and yet we know their silly valves be won when it comes to access, when it comes to football during school pe lessons, where girls don't have the same provision that boys enjoy. indeed only 40% of secondary schools offer that during pe classes, and also when it comes to attendance at wsl matches as well, which remained stubbornly low, and there's a real hope that while this may not be an overnight progress, this can be something of a catalyst for that bigger picture, and i think there is also a sense the premier league may have to do more to help, allow their women's teams to use the main grounds more regularly, make it easierforfans to buy grounds more regularly, make it easier for fans to buy tickets. earlier on, i caught up with the fa's first everfemale earlier on, i caught up with the fa's first ever female chair at those celebrations. this is what she had to say about trying to harness this opportunity.

we have seen in the past, haven't we, that great events, while providing inspiration, do not necessarily inevitably translate into a surge in participation numbers? you need only look at the london games ten years ago to see that, but the fa are vowing to capitalise on this. they said they have been planning forward, they have been planning forward, they have put in place already some legacy programmes they hope will pay dividends, and they think that the women that secured this historic triumph can be the first beneficiaries. certainly, it should beneficiaries. certainly, it should be life—changing for the lionesses, a string of sponsors lining up to offer them endorsement deals. that is what certain people in the business of sport industry telling us, and there is a world cup in australia to look forward to next yearfor australia to look forward to next year for that team, so who knows what may happen there given the confidence that must be flowing through the side? the fa have some ambitious targets. by 2024 they want

equal access for both boys and girls and boys in school to play football. they want to triple the number of people going to watch dubya also matches, and it will be fascinating to see, whether or not, this is the ground making moment that leads to this sport truly entering the mainstream —— wsl matches. in one sense, that has been achieved. just one final point. the atmosphere, so family—friendly, celebratory, in stark contrast to that men's final a year ago, stark contrast to that men's final a yearago, but stark contrast to that men's final a year ago, but throughout the whole term it, many fans would've been convinced to give the wsl a chance in the new season. that would be one of the true measures of the success. absolutely. our sports editor dan roan at wembley. talking about atmosphere, the said been called the

commonwealth games. they did not show the euros final on the big screen, it was commonwealth games heavy, but people were keeping an eye on their phones. this is an huge summer of sport. and the commonwealth games here in birmingham are a big part of that. there's been more success for the home nations today, including in the gymnastics, where england's jake jarman has become a triple commonwealth champion after winning gold in the men's floor final, adding to the team gold he won on friday and the all—around gold he collected on sunday. it was a really classy performance. england's giarnni regini—moran took bronze, finishing ahead of wales' emil barber in fourth. i will never get used to the feeling. you know, isay i will never get used to the feeling. you know, i say it again, i have cited multiple times. like, the atmosphere in here isjust amazing, it is something else, and to be able to come out here again and

experience it every time is just... it's really special, you know, and it's a huge confidence boost to know that everyone here is supporting. and to see the community this big is amazing. and jarman's team—mate joe fraser also had an incredible day. in the pommel horse final, he took gold, finishing ahead of northern ireland's rhys mclennaghan, who was unable to defend his title. he took silver. fraser was hoping to add a third, but it was courtney tulloch of england with the standout performance on the rings. the defending champion put on a strong show to get his second gold of these games.
6:44 pm
fraser finished just outside the medals, tulloch making a three gymnastics gold medals to tell you about. but you know what? let's talk about another one. england's georgia—may fenton won the women's uneven bars with a brilliant score of 13.9, becoming the first woman to retain the title. that is her second gold medal of these games. what incredible day, then, for england's gymnasts in particular with those four goals. we are going to move to cycling next. she's done it again. it got the loudest cheer of the day behind me on the big screen here at victoria square — laura kenny to the rescue. after struggling for confidence, she said, on the final day of competition at the lee valley velo park, she finally won england's first track cycling gold of these games. and what a moment it was, as austin halewood reports.
6:45 pm
just like that, the final evening of track cycling was upon us, and after four days without english champion, the home crowd were hungry for some gold. and dame laura kenny rarely lets them down. a decade ago, this was the very track where she made her name, with two goals in the london olympics, and still she's hungry for more. she was going in the final of the women's scratch race, and unlike some of the other events on the track, this one is simple — ten commenters, 40 laps, the first writer crossed the line wins. it was only with a few laps ago the race unfolded was up the first writer to back herself and make a break for the line of about the scott had dangled the carrot, and deepak were more than happy to her down —— first rider. kenny made her down —— first rider. kenny made her move. and with 27 major camping jim golds already in the bag she knows exactly how to turn it on in these cloning moments. find knows exactly how to turn it on in these cloning moments.- knows exactly how to turn it on in these cloning moments. and she is a chamion these cloning moments. and she is a champion once _

great stuff for laura kenny. we'll bring you more medal success for the home nations a bit later, but first let's look ahead to what should be another drama—filled session in the pool. we're all still getting over the shock of adam peaty being beaten in the 100 metres breaststroke last night, but he's been back in the water today. let's cross live to the sandwell aquatics centre and our reporter kate grey. how did peaty look today? you summed it u- reall how did peaty look today? you summed it no really well — how did peaty look today? you summed it up really well there, _ how did peaty look today? you summed it up really well there, there _ how did peaty look today? you summed it up really well there, there is - it up really well there, there is still a feeling of shock around adam peaty not winning a medal here at these commonwealth games in the 100 metres breaststroke last night. he has had a tough season, with injury, a broken foot, so we were not expecting huge amounts, but do not win a medal was something people were not expecting. as you say, there has been action is morning in there has been action is morning in the 50 metres breaststroke heat. he looks comfortable, he qualified as joint fastest into this evening's semifinal. he has always enjoyed each orders sprint and it should

gold galore for england today. louis ridout, nick brett and jamie chestney maintained their 100% record to take gold in the lawn bowls men's triples. the english trio were never behind in the final but suffered a slight scare as australia's barry lester, carl healey and ben twist levelled at 12—12 after 16 ends, before pulling clear again to win 14—12. and guernsey, let's mention this. they have their first commonwealth medal since 1994. lucy beere was in the final of the women's singles against australian ellen ryan. it was something of an epic tussle, and despite taking an early lead beere had to settle for silver, as ryan snatched it. still a memorable day, though, for guernsey. and there's been gold for england in thejudo. ashley mckenzie beat compatriot sami hall in the final of the men's 60 kilogramme competition. 33—year—old mckenzie was also champion in glasgow back in 2014.

swimming still to come. head over to iplayerfor that, but for swimming still to come. head over to iplayer for that, but for me and the team at birmingham, thanks for watching. have a good night. —— the commonwealth games. hello there. for some parts of the south and east, it's been the driestjuly on record. and the rain that's falling now is unlikely to reach southern areas, but it is quite heavy on a brisk wind across northern areas, and that will continue to push across much of scotland after northern ireland, into northern england, parts of wales, the midlands as well, with a few drips and dra bs further south. but primarily in the south, it's just going to be another warm and muggy night. but it will be much warmer further north as well, and because we've got that humidity rising, lots of misty low cloud shrouding the hills and the coasts. still some heavy bursts of rain first thing tomorrow. it becomes more showery towards the north of our weather

front and still mainly dry in the south and east and very warm, 29, 30 degrees. a warmer day when the sun comes out further north as well compared with today. as for the outlook, once that clears away, things will freshen up by the time we get to thursday and then it's a primarily dry picture once again.
