it comes after the european court of human rights refused an application not to postpone the withdrawal of his treatment. his family now wants him to be taken to a hospice, as louisa pilbeam reports. she says she'll fight for him until the end. but archie's mum accepts she's now at the end of her legal fight for her son's life. 12—year—old archie has been in a coma on life support since he was found unconscious in april. last night, the european court of human rights refused to intervene to stop that life support being withdrawn, ending the family's last hope. absolutely devastated. frustrated, angry. let down. so many emotions. hollie dance and herfamily took their fight to every court in the land — from the court of appeal to the supreme court — even the un, before trying the european court of human rights. after careful thought, we refuse permission to appeal. but each court agreed with the medical experts that archie

6:04 am
to their highest level in almost three decades later today. it would mean a sixth hike in a row and impacting mortgages and credit charges for millions of people. hannah, for millions of people. us through what we know. the for millions of people. bank of england licks intere rates the bank of england licks interest rates every six weeks. this decision could be big. we are expecting the best single monthly rise in 27 years. the rate of inflation is at its highest level for a0 years. some inflation is a good thing in a healthy economy but the target is just 2%, compared to the current 9.4%. so, how do you control surging inflation? one way is to raise interest rates. that makes borrowing more expensive and encourages saving. it brings
6:05 am
inflation down. interest rates are currently 1.25% — from a historic low of 0.1% in december. this lunchtime, we'll know whether the bank of england will raise them for the sixth time in a row. there's some speculation that the bank could increase the rate by 0.5%. that would be the biggest single hike since before the bank was independent. the interest rate back then was already well above 6%. rising interest rates are generally good news for savers but bad news if you're hoping to take out a mortgage. we will find out around lunchtime today what it means for all of us. 0ur political correspondentjonathan blake joins us now from westminster. we have this race for prime minister, their next prime minister, leader of the conservative party. a

rising interest rates, however necessary, it doesn't bode well when it comes to town around the economy. the economy has been the big backdrop around the leadership contest and what to do about rising prices. the problem of inflation is an issue for their next prime minister, whoever that may be, whether rishi sunak or liz truss. in a string of hustings events last night in cardiff, it was this subject that dominated. former chancellor rishi sunak arguing once again his opponent's policies to reduce taxes straightaway would stoke inflation and drive up interest rates. his arguments that liz truss's policy would make a cycle we are seeing worse. liz truss, the foreign secretary, says modest tax cuts she wants to bring in relatively quickly would not be
6:07 am
inflationary and would stimulate economic growth, thereby reducing the problem of rising prices and potentially the knock—on impact of inflation in the longer term. that debate will continue because the candidates will meet again this evening in a televised series of interviews and questions from a live audience on sky news this evening. as the weeks up until the end of august and beginning of september continue when conservative party members will have their vote, it will be this issue of the economy which continues to dominate. looking ahead to the decision of the bank of england later, it is very much front and centre people's minds. england's victorious footballers have written an open letter, urging the next prime minister to help ensure more girls take up the sport. following their win in the european championships on sunday, the lionesses have urged liz truss and rishi sunak to prioritise funding for girls' football in schools. robert townsend reports.

commentator: chloe kelly! this is an opportunity to make a huge difference. that's the message from england's victorious lionesses, who brought home the country's first major footballing trophy more than 55 yea rs. england, european champions. now, the winning squad are calling on the uk's next prime minister to ensure every young girl can play football at school. in an open letter to conservative party leadership candidates, liz truss and rishi sunak, the 23 member euros squad said they were inspiring girls to play football only for many to be unable to take up the sport in school. the team highlighted how only 63% of girls could play football during pe lessons, according to an fa report published last year. and there were calls for girls to have access to a minimum of
6:09 am
two hours of physical education in school each week, alongside further investment and support forfemale pe teachers. speaking to bbc breakfast, the lionesses said the time had come for change. hopefully, what we will see is a change in those policies. i don't know what the ins and outs of obviously all the rules and regulations are but all i know is, so many messages from so many people just saying how great it was and how much their daughter, especially, also sons, but daughters are in the garden during practising their football. that's what we want. i think this could really be a turning point for women, and women in sport. as a group of girls we would love to see that change. we set out to inspire the next generation. we set out to inspire the nation. girls in sport, i think it could be a really big turning point and that's really excited for. commentator:

history makers, record breakers. a spokesperson for rishi sunak said he would launch a review whilst those representing liz truss said she would investigate what events schools from delivering the recommended minimum of two hours of pe a week. whilst the lionesses may well have already fulfilled their dreams and those of a nation, it is hoped the latest move may well play the way for other young women and girls to reach their goals. china is holding major military exercises in the seas around taiwan, after a visit by a senior us politician increased tensions over the island. nancy pelosi, who is the speaker of the us house of representatives, has now left taiwan after a trip described by china as a "major provocation." we can speak now to our correspondent rupert wingfield—hayes, who joins us from taiwan.

a very good morning to you. give us a sense of the scale of the chinese military operation and what response there has been. it is military operation and what response there has been.— there has been. it is a very large-scale _ there has been. it is a very large-scale military - there has been. it is a very - large-scale military operation, the large—scale military operation, the largest we have seen probably for a quarter of a century, i would say. china has declared six very large its of sea around taiwan to the north, south, east and west to be off limits dual air and sea traffic for the next four days, until sunday. we don't know at this stage what china is planning to do. these areas are very close to taiwan. if china sends aircraft or ships or fires missiles into these areas, thatis fires missiles into these areas, that is going to raise tensions here are a great deal. we don't know what scenarios are. it is very calm here in a taiwanese capital. the taiwanese government says it is monitoring the situation. it warned
6:12 am
people to be ready for cyber attacks. people are braced, concerned but not panicking. they are watching china. they have seen this sort of thing before. china has stepped up the level of pressure this time around by making these exercises very close to the chinese coast. we might see china firing missiles into those areas to really try to intimidate taiwan. detectives searching for a student nurse, who vanished nearly a month ago in south london, are continuing to question three men arrested on suspicion of murder. 24—year—old 0wami davies left herfamily home in grays, essex, and was last seen in west croydon on 7thjuly. police say she was captured on cctv in the company of a man on the night she was last seen alive, and are keen to speak to a van driver seen passing 0wami on the street. the supermarket, marks & spencer, has stopped selling disposable barbecues in all of its stores across the uk,
6:13 am
following a number of wildfires linked to last month's heatwave. the retailer said it wanted "to help protect open spaces and reduce the risk of fires." it comes after the commissioner of the london fire brigade called for disposable barbecues to be taken off the shelves across britain. it's 6:13 am. now the weather with carol. it still seems pretty pleasant. as always it depends where you are. we have had heavy rain overnight in parts of northern ireland and scotland which will clear. for the rest of the week it will be dry for most of us and there will be scattered showers. it will feel much fresher you can see the rain moving towards the north sea. it also
6:14 am
extends down into northern england. that will clear. then a day of sunshine and showers. most of them will be in the north and the west. you might see some in central areas, possibly across parts of the south and east into the south—west. further south, they will be more isolated. there south we have lost their humanity. this evening many of their humanity. this evening many of the daytime showers will fade. a week when a friend coming in from the north—west which is heading south and east. —— a week where the front. the other thing is temperatures will be that bit lower. we can see a low of five and shalt cleanse in the highlands. tomorrow we will have showers around. the heavy showers will be a shetland. in between there will be a lot of sunshine with the driest conditions further south. temperatures tomorrow
6:15 am
12 to 24. if you prefer temperatures higher, as we head into the weekend they start to rise once again. the early part of next week, some part of the south could get back up to 30 degrees, if not 30 degrees itself. see you later. let's take a look at today's papers. many, like the times, lead on the possibility of a hosepipe ban across parts of the uk as the country faces drought. people living in kent and sussex could be the first to experience limits on their water usage. the daily express says there are fears soaring gas bills will push inflation to 15%. it also says mortgage rates are set to rise. civil rights activist roy hackett features on the front of the guardian. one of the organisers of the bristol bus boycott of 1963, his death, at the age of 93, was announced yesterday. and, we wanted to show you this lovely image of a smiling
6:16 am
katarina johnson—thompson after she won gold in the heptathlon at the commonwealth games yesterday. she has by her own admission had a pretty rough couple of years, for various reasons. last night she won the gold medal. a very great moment for her. i am going to pick up on the death of roy hackett, which was announced yesterday. if you are not familiar with him, announced yesterday. if you are not familiarwith him, it announced yesterday. if you are not familiar with him, it is worth knowing what he did. he launched a campaign in 1963 which lasted four months. it mobilised people across the city to stop using bristol 0mnibus company because they refused to hire black and asian people. there were lots of stories of when eventually there were black and asian bus drivers, people would not get on buses. he was inspired by the bus boycotts from the us civil

rights movements. these protests that happened. the company to change its policies but also page the way when it came to passing the race relations act of 1965 and 1968. the boycott was in 1963. the picture you are seeing is a big mural. he is a massive figure in the city of bristol. he had west indian parents. that is the picture from the west indian friends association. it is worth remembering. it was thought to be the first boycott of its kind in britain and he went on to found the commonwealth coordinated committee and setup the carnival in 1968. that committee still runs today. 1963, in some ways a long time actually
6:18 am
sounds relatively recent there was a time refusing to employ black drivers. absolutely. it is interesting. when people think about it, you probably do not know much about him as a personality, a powerful, thoughtful and funny man. this is someone paying tribute to him, a professor of that also said any man, a big personality who made any man, a big personality who made a massive difference. 93, a great age. 0n the theme of the 60s, this picture in weston—super—mare, anyone who is old enough and maybe will to a sigma —— may be more recently, donkey rides were a traditional british beaches. weston—super—mare, at one place where kids went donkey
6:19 am
rides were part of the summertime. now there and also in scarborough, a real problem in getting the operators of the donkey rides to carry on because it is getting too expensive, too much bureaucracy to many forms to fill in. they say it is too expensive to carry on business and they cannot get the operators. in scarborough they are advertising for people to do the donkey rides but cannot get people to do it. there is a quote from one of the owners of donkey companies saying licensing is becoming more challenging. they, iassume saying licensing is becoming more challenging. they, i assume that means the council, want a paper trailfor means the council, want a paper trail for everything. you means the council, want a paper trailfor everything. you have to lug working hours, when the feet are cleaned and when you map out the stables. that is how things have changed in as much as welfare for animals who are working has increased enormously. either way, animals who are working has
6:20 am
increased enormously. eitherway, it means donkey rides are not going to happen. i like the idea of logging when their feet are cleaned. we will be catching up with mike later at the commonwealth games. you may remember earlier this year, we spoke to the father of murdered pc nicola hughes, who called for a new medal to honour emergency service workers killed in the line of duty. bryn hughes's campaign has since received huge support, including from the scottish government and the mayor of greater manchester. now he's been to meet other families who have lost loved ones in similar circumstances, as abi smitton reports. my dad is pc george taylor. he was murdered in november 1976. my daughter was pc nicola hughes. she was killed on the 18th of september 2012.
6:21 am
my father was detective - sergeant william ross hunt. he was murdered . on duty injune 1983. three men. each has lost a loved one, killed in the line of duty. at the end of the day, it's a group you don't want to be part of. it's that exclusive club. you didn't want to join. you don't want to be a member of it. but now you are a member of it, you don't want to leave. - yeah, i'll give you that one. absolutely. well, we've no choice. at the end of the day, you know, we can't leave. but, it is that thing now — there's got to be a drive. david was just eight years old when his dad, pc george taylor, was killed by two escaped prisoners. i remember it like yesterday. such a vivid memory because it was such a traumatic thing as a child. i could tell you what my mum
6:22 am
was wearing when she walked into our bedroom to tell us. um...that he wasn't there anymore. do you know, it's hellish hard to hear that as an eight—year—old. but i still see it. but so proud of him. do you know? i know he fought for his life. before his death, george worked with detective sergeant ross hunt, adrian's father. he was murdered in 1983, attacked by three members of the same family during an arrest. i often reflect on it. he was... he was a man... i described him as a man for all seasons. colleagues used to refer to him as father because if they wanted advice, they would go to my dad for advice. so many people have said that over the years, father. i was 18. i was the youngest in the house. my two brothers had left home.
6:23 am
one was in london, one was in canada, and i basically became the man of the house overnight, and very protective of my mother. bryn*s daughter — pc nicola hughes — was one of two officers murdered in 2012 when they were lured to a house and attacked. sometimes ten years feels like ten days and ten hours. ithink... there's so much happened in such a long time, but such a short time as well. and it's hard to... it's hard to put it into words how we how we feel after ten years, because your grief changes. there's times when you feel really proud and there's times _ when you feel emotional. i think pride is the biggest sense because of what she achieved i in that short term of service. earlier this year, bryn launched a campaign to introduce a medal to honour any emergency service worker killed in the line of duty. nicola, my dad and obviously your dad left a legacy anyway. and if we can leave
6:24 am
a legacy by pushing this, so it keeps going, it's a win in my book. and it's in perpetuity. it's there forever. we all go to bed - with those thoughts. we all wake up with . those same thoughts. | and sometimes you talk to yourself, | and sometimes you console yourself. and i think if you can look at this tangible memorial — that meansl so much. it does — i absolutely agree. 100%. one of the lasting tributes already in place to honour fallen officers is the uk police memorial at the national memorial arboretum. blown away with the scale of it and the idea behind it. and it'sjust nice that there's some specific large memorial to contemplate those that aren't here any more. i love the idea of the leaf shape, with the glint — the sun hitting the gold — and itjust, you know, the fallen.
6:25 am
that's really what it is. it's the fallen. and it kind of rings true that that's how we should remember them as the fallen, and they should never be forgotten. inspired by such a moving tribute to their loved ones, bryn, david and adrian are united in their dream to see a medal — to honour theirfallen heroes and many others lost in the line of duty. it's as if everything's opened up here and we have that affinity straight away. yeah. like i say, this is almost... we've known each other for years, but when you think about it, we're all fighting for the same thing. absolutely. and it's brought that connection. now we're gradually joining the dots. uh-huh. yes. and that's the bonus. that understanding of it. we're on the drive for it. absolutely. it's not an individual thing any more, it's a collective. which, for me, feels stronger together. if we stay together we're stronger. yeah, it feels a lot stronger.
6:26 am
use all the three men and we will be speaking to them later in the programme to find out after coming together how they want to move forward with their campaign to get a medal enacted and brought into practice to honour their loved ones. time now to get the news, travel and weather where you are. good morning from bbc london, with me, alison earle. new data shows antisemitic hate fell by more than a third in london in the first six months of the year. research by the charity community security trust found incidents against the jewish community fell by 39 percent between january and june. it comes after they hit an all—time high last year. but the findings suggest a growth in the number of issues involving under 18s.
6:27 am
0ur report shows that the proportion of incidents involving children, both as victims and perpetrators, is going up. so, it's mainly school—age children, on the streets and online, and i think the fact that that age group are much more present on social media and get a lot more of their information and ideas about the world from the online space is probably playing a role in driving this trend. these were the scenes at emma raducanu's old club in south london last night. cheering. not for the tennis star though. members at park langley in bromley were celebrating gina kennedy, who trains there and took gold. she's england's first female commonwealth squash champion. sticking with sport, skateboarding has been on the rise ever since the olympics.
6:28 am
now it seems more young women are taking it up for their duke of edinburgh award. this year more than 350 chose the sport, up from 39 in 2017. that's an increase of 800 percent. the scheme started by the late prince philip is aimed at 14 to 24 year olds, who pick their own activities and volunteer for a cause. travel now and this is how tfl services are looking at the moment. there are minor delays on the district line between earl's court and wimbledon. and there's a reduced service on the 0verground from richmond / clapham junction to stratford. now the weather with kate kinsella. good morning. it was another quite warm and uncomfortable night last night but fresher air is on the way. high pressure extends from the west through today and through the weekend, so plenty of fine and dry weather in the forecast. lots of sunshine this morning and a bit more cloud this afternoon which means we can't rule out the odd isolated shower perhaps up in the home counties but temperatures today a little cooler between 22 and 26 celsius, the maximum.
6:29 am
0vernight, any remaining cloud will disappear so some lengthy clear spells and it's going to be cooler, so perhaps a little more comfortable for sleeping between 11 and 14 celsius, the minimum temperature. that high pressure continues to extend from the west through the course of friday so it will be another dry day, lots of sunshine around, maybe a bit of patchy cloud bubbling up into the afternoon, and it will be a bit breezier tomorrow with a north—westerly wind but temperatures feeling a little fresher, between 21 and 25 celsius. through the weekend it stays dry and it stays warm, the mid 20s, but as we head into next week there is no significant rain in the forecast and in fact the temperature is set to get a little warmer. that's it for now. but there's lots more on our website and social media. now though it's back to naga and charlie. hello, this is breakfast with naga munchetty and charlie stayt.
6:30 am
coming up on the show this morning. yes, it's that time of year again — we'll be revealing not one, but two, strictly come dancing contestants ahead of the start of the 20th season. history makers, record breakers, game changers. why the lionesses' success is inspiring a new generation of female footballers. and the ever—growing problem of plastic pollution in our waterways — we find out what impact it's having on our wildlife. let's stay with the sporting theme and go with mike in birmingham. good morning. let's catch up with an amazing night of performances. fix, bit amazing night of performances. a bit of histo . amazing night of performances. a bit of history- l — amazing night of performances. a bit of history. i found _ amazing night of performances. a bit of history. i found one _ amazing night of performances. a bit of history. i found one of these wicker— of history. i found one of these wicker statues which are around the city to _ wicker statues which are around the city to celebrate the games and this is a pommel horse athlete and the

title in 1986 and 1990. it's been such an up—and—down year with covid and then another illness and a couple of little niggles at the wrong time and i've never sprinted like that in my entire life. but, honestly, without the crowd i wouldn't have finished like that tonight and ijust wanted it so bad. and the british golds kept coming at the alexander stadium. after a personal best in the javelin, gold was in the palm of katarina johnson—thompson's hands, and with just the 800 metres to come, she wouldn't let it go. another lap of honour for kjt and another commonwealth title. earlier, cannock chase forest hosted the mountain bike cross country and the home crowd were there to see favourite evie richards, and despite a bad back and covid in the build—up, there were hardly any slip—ups as she raced away to gold. but talking of bad backs, watching the amount of weight emily campbell shifts is enough to make anyone feel sore. but the english lifter blew away the rest of the field with back—to—back games records

6:34 am
that is wonderful, the golden grandmas. we've seen history made more than once already here — and gina kennedy has joined that list. she became the first englishwoman to win a commonwealth squash singles title. kennedy trains at the same club as tennis star emma raducanu and this is her debut at the games after a meteoric rise. she's moved from a world ranking of 185th to the top 10 in less than a year. so, how does all that leave the medals table? england are still second but they're just six golds behind australia now scotland are fifth after their fantastic day. wales— stay eighth and that first gold for northern ireland has moved them up four places to 13th. a week into the games
6:35 am
there will be a slight lull today with only 15 gold medals up for grabs. england flag bearer jack laugher will be diving this evening at sandwell aquatics centre. the road cycling gets underway with geraint thomas fresh from his third place at the tour de france going in the time trial. and the first rhythmic gymnastics medals will be awarded. away from the games there are a few stories to bring you. and captain kasper schmeichel is moving to the south of france tojoin ligue un side nice. he'd been at leicester since 2011, winning the premier league, fa cup and community shield. southern brave got their defence of the hundred title off to an impressive start, beating welsh fire by nine wickets. they were chasing 108 to win, and they knocked that off with 31 balls to spare. and phil mickelson and ian poulter are among 11 liv golfers who've filed a lawsuit against the pga tour in the united states, which has suspended all members

from withered crops to reduced waterways — the long period of dry weather is having a huge impact on our outdoor spaces. in england, millions of people are facing a hosepipe ban — and concerns are growing that a drought could be on its way. as ian reeve reports from north yorkshire, it's a particular worry for those working the land. ho, ho, ho! 0n keith's swaledale hill farm, stocked with cattle and sheep, the evidence that it's been the hottestjuly for 111 years. still no vegetation worth eating. the lambs are suffering. the lack of rain and consequent lack of grass here inhibits the ewes from producing milk. the effect will be felt when the lambs come to be sold in the autumn sales. the sheep, in particular, are very thin. the ewes producing the milk for the lambs, they are thin because they are not picking up enough nutrition from the forage,
6:39 am
but the lambs are becoming potbellied and thin because they are not getting the nutrition from the grass or the milk that their mums are not supplying. do you think you will be able to sell them? everybody in this area is in the same boat and there will be so little demand for them. also the people who would perhaps buy them will be short of grass or feed at the moment to feed them on anyway, so they are not going to want to buy them anyway. we just have to make the best of it and hope that some of the grass will regenerate and we will be able to feed them a little longer. go on! it's just supplementary feeding. this is what they need for winter, but we are having to feed it now because there isn't enough grass for them at the moment. so, it's going to run out before it gets to winter. the lack of rain is just what many farmers didn't need. they are already grappling with high fuel, feed and fertiliser costs. parched earth will, keith reckons,

be a final straw for some. genuinely worried. we lived on the back of the last year or two but we are genuinely worried for the future. we just don't know which way to turn. we are very resilient, we moan at times, and we maybe shouldn't, but, at the moment, the writing is in big letters that it won't stack up. ian reeve, bbc news. of course, this is something carroll can talk about because we've been talking nonstop about the desire for rain in so many parts of the country. i think that map will tell us a lot. yes, good morning everyone. we have had southern england's driestjuly on record and if you think about the records they go way back to 1835, and if i run this sequence a little bit more you will see what i'm talking about because, on average, and here is the key, we would be
6:41 am
looking at the whites, even the light lilac colours but we have a lot of browns, meaning most of us have had below average rainfall during the month ofjuly on what happened was high—pressure built—in and effectively blocked the atlantic influence on our weather so it kept all of the weather fronts out of the north and west and that is where we saw rain but even in the north and west you can see the rainfall amounts were more or less average. to give you an idea of what we've had in the summer months so far, meet your logically speaking, the summer months arejune, july and august and we'vejust summer months arejune, july and august and we've just started august so forjune and july we've had 105.3 millimetres of the rainfall we would expect and 240 millimetres is what we would look out for the whole of the summer months so it's unlikely we would make average rainfall which probably won't come as a huge surprise to anyone and in the next few days this is the kind of
6:42 am
rainfall amounts we are expecting, so there's not much where we need the rain as we were hearing across parts of the south and also central areas as well. but what we do having the forecast is a fresh feel to the weather and it will be dry for many of us and there will be some scattered showers but no significant rain. high—pressure still very much in charge of the weather and you can see it moving across and any weather fronts are being kept at bay across the north of the country in the next few days and this is where we will see rain at times and where it will be windy at times as well into the weekend, and the other thing as temperatures will start to rise again later this weekend and into the early part next week. we have had some heavy rain moving across northern ireland and scotland through the course of the item that will clear in the next couple of hours from eastern scotland and it will take some of the shower is falling across northern england with it as well. to the west we will see further showers develop, north and west scotland with a few getting into northern ireland and we will
6:43 am
see showers across central swathes of the country as we go through the day but for the south and south—east, not many showers, if any at all but it will feel fresher than it has done. we have lost the humidity and are looking at highs of between 14 and 25 degrees. if you are heading to the commonwealth games, temperatures down a couple of degrees on what we had yesterday and temperatures up to about 20 but for most it should stay dry. this is the outside chance of a shower. as we head into the evening and overnight, still a lot of dry weather around but we do have a weather front, a weak affair coming on across the north west and that will introduce further showers. a fresh and night to come than the one that has gone and we are looking at overnight lows between eight and 14 degrees and it leads us to a cold start tomorrow so there will be a lot of dry weather tomorrow and a fair bit of sunshine and there will be some showers and we can see them scattered around and temperatures very similar to today and again we are looking at between
6:44 am
12 and 24 degrees. as we head into the weekend and into next week, we are still dominated by high pressure, especially so across southern areas. any weather fronts are kept at bay in the north and west, so the north and west is where it will be windy at times but we will also see rain and a bit more cloud and, further south under the high pressure, things remain dry and settled and you can see in reading how the temperatures are rising. in some parts of the south—east we expect the temperatures on monday and tuesday to get up as high as 30 degrees, so no significant rain in the south for the next while anyway. when you finally get some splodges of rain on your graphics you will be ever so popular. i of rain on your graphics you will be ever so pewter-— of rain on your graphics you will be ever so popular-— ever so popular. i will be ever so leased ever so popular. i will be ever so pleased as _ ever so popular. i will be ever so pleased as well. _ ever so popular. i will be ever so pleased as well. if _ ever so popular. i will be ever so pleased as well. if you _ ever so popular. i will be ever so pleased as well. if you take - ever so popular. i will be ever so pleased as well. if you take into | pleased as well. if you take into account — pleased as well. if you take into account the problem is that the farmers— account the problem is that the farmers and growers have gone and i look at _ farmers and growers have gone and i look at my— farmers and growers have gone and i look at my own garden, it's like the gobi desert, — look at my own garden, it's like the gobi desert, the soil is like sand. really— gobi desert, the soil is like sand. really powdery. the lawn is brown.

6:46 am
it's fantastically different and it's the first time it's been done. he's already driven this adapted wheelchair to hit motorway speeds of nearly 67 mph. that got him a guinness world record. but now jason is back at elvington, near york, to try for another. using his computerised voice, he explains why. i hope to achieve a new guinness world record for the fastest head—controlled wheelchair. to get on the track again will be a great achievement and it will be the hardest challenge yet. jason's health is much worse. last time he controlled the chair with his hands, but motor neurone disease has now paralysed him from the neck down. he has a tracheotomy and needs a ventilator to breathe. at home, he needs round—the—clock care.
6:47 am
fabry disease affects his organs, and he needs dialysis for his failing kidneys, and in may, he had a serious cardiac arrest which doctors thought he would not survive, but he did. and it's not the first time he has proved them wrong. the doctors are way past giving any sort of prognosis. they can't explain it, the same as we can't explain it. ijust put it down to jason's amazing mind and his will to live. he promised lily and poppy he would fight and that is what he is doing. how many times has daddy proved them wrong? probably about 10,000. i think that he is very brave and, to be honest, i did not agree with him during the world record because he's just had a cardiac arrest, but he was absolutely like, he really wanted to do it. but it's not going to be easy. i remote control the chair with my head with switches at the side and front of my helmet, but this will be really
6:48 am
challenging because even slow movements are very difficult and it depends how much movement i have on the day whether i can control the chair and achieve my goal. the chair has been adapted by experts from the bluebird team who recovered and restored the k—7 boat used by famous speed record breaker donald campbell. they have two very sensitive switches, very light operation for very short travel and we are setting them up precisely so we can tune them to the movement that jason's got. but two attempts in, and it's clear something is wrong. both times, jason ends up veering off the track and into the verge. is your head fixed on the right switch all the time, jason? it's one of those things, you have |to make it run on a straight line. | it's a bit like tracking a car. the same thing. will it be third time lucky? that's it, lad.
6:49 am
that's it, lad you've smashed 40? nearly 50 on the second run. the average is 41.8215. and that is a new guinness record, subject to ratification. applause. well done, jason! absolutely outstanding. i loved the drama and the failed journeys, and he got near 50 at one point. journeys, and he got near 50 at one oint. ,, ., journeys, and he got near 50 at one oint, ., ., .,. with more than 60—thousand streets within a 6—mile radius — taxi drivers in london certainly have their work cut out for them. traditionally it's a job

england's victorious footballers have written an open letter urging the next prime minister to help ensure more girls take up the sport. following their win in the european championships on sunday, the lionesses have urged liz truss and rishi sunak to prioritise funding for girls' football in schools. robert townsend reports. commentator: chloe kelly! this is an opportunity to make a huge difference. that's the message from england's victorious lionesses, who brought home the country's first major footballing trophy more than 55 years. commentator: england, european champions. i now, the winning squad are calling on the uk's next prime minister to ensure every young girl can play football at school. in an open letter to conservative party leadership candidates, liz truss and rishi sunak, the 23—member euros squad said they were inspiring girls to play football only for many to be unable to take up the sport in school.
7:11 am
the team highlighted how only 63% of girls can play football during pe lessons, according to an fa report published last year. and there were calls for girls to have access to a minimum of two hours of physical education in school each week, alongside further investment and support for female pe teachers. speaking to bbc breakfast, the lionesses said the time had come for change. hopefully, what we'll see is a change in those policies. i don't know what the ins and outs of obviously all the rules and regulations are but all i know is, so many messages from so many people just saying how great it was and how much their daughter, especially, also sons, but daughters are in the garden doing goalkeeping or practising their football. that's what we want. i think this could really be a turning point for women, and women in sport. as a group of girls, we would love to see that change. we set out to inspire the next generation.

we set out to inspire the nation. but, girls in sport, i think it could be a really big turning point and that's what we're really excited for. commentator: history-makers, record-breakers. _ a spokesperson for rishi sunak said he would launch a review to make sure all women and girls had the opportunity to take part in the sport, whilst those representing liz truss said she would investigate what prevents schools from delivering the recommended minimum of two hours of pe each week. so whilst the lionesses may have already fulfilled their dreams and those of a nation, it's hoped their latest move could help pave the way for other young women and girls to reach their own goals. robert townsend, bbc news. and we'll be speaking to some aspiring young footballers — and the lionesses who inspired them. there they are, just outside here at

7:16 am
in 27 years. that's because inflation — the rate at which prices are rising — is at its highest level for 40 years. now some inflation is a good thing for a healthy economy but the target is just 2%, compared to the current 9.4%. so, how do you try to get surging inflation under control? well, traditionally one way is to raise interest rates — which makes it more expensive for us all to borrow money, so we slow down how much we're willing to spend, and that can bring costs down. now interest rates are currently 1.25% — up from what was a historic low of 0.1% last december. and at 12 o'clock today we'll find out for sure whether the bank of england will raise them for the sixth time in a row. there's some speculation they could increase the rate by as much as 0.5%. that would be the biggest single hike since 1995 but it's worth pointing out that back then rates were already much higher. but putting up interest rates is just one way of attempting to control the cost of living crisis. and the two candidates hoping to become the next prime minister
7:17 am
both have their own ideas. first up, rishi sunak — the former chancellor. he's promised to scrap vat on energy bills for a year, which he claims will save the average household around £160. as chancellor, he put up taxes, but now he's vowing the biggest tax cut in 30 years — pledging to reduce the basic rate from 20% to 16% by the end of the next parliament, but only after inflation has been brought under control. let's look at his rival, liz truss. the current foreign secretary, she's pledged to reverse rishi sunak*s hike in national insurance, which has seen workers and employers pay an extra 1.25p per pound since april. she would also remove green levies from energy bills for two years — which currently account for around £153 on an average yearly bill. but the plan she did have to link public sector pay to local living costs has been scrapped after backlash from tory mps.

7:20 am
in the frenetic world of track cycling, high—speed crashes aren't unusual. big crashes brought half the field down, but this one on sunday was with a momentjust out of shot, making it potentially devastating. as this video from a shocked spectator shows, england's matt walls was catapulted out of the melee and into the stands. fans were soon face—to—face with flying men and bikes, including hugh colvin and his two young children. you can see the trajectory of the bike came through, grazed my daughter's shoulder, and there's one of the photos you can see where obviously underneath the wheel. and i was facing the other way because i turned my head, but it must have been in centimetres, millimetres of our heads and obviously close enough to graze my daughter. for his wife, laura, who wasn't there, it's hit home how much worse it could have been. i think what's been quite hard for us to get our head around is being able to see from the photographs that were taken

of the incident exactly how close this came to being a complete catastrophe, and how close our two younger children came to being seriously injured or killed. with walls needing 40 minutes of treatment in the stands, the session was abandoned and the venue cleared. he and two other cyclists were taken to hospital, including the isle of man's matt bostock, who said he'd never seen anything like what happened. going over the top of the barriers at probably 30 mile an hour or something — terrifying. and i could not believe that he was up on his feet. contrary to early statements from the velodrome and games organisers saying no members of the public required hospital treatment. a friend, seen here in red, will require surgery for an arm injury that medics

likened to a machete wound. and there have been psychological impacts, too. the children were so worried about the cyclist. my daughter in particular was terribly, terribly worried about what had happened to matt walls. he was very kind and facetimed her on monday evening and that was a really big step forward for her. what is staggered the most is the realisation that while incidents like these are incredibly rare, cyclists have ended up in the crowd before. if we had known for a moment that there was a risk that a bike with an adult male going at that speed could come into contact with my seven—year—old daughter, my family would never have been there. it hasn't put me off sports or watching track cycling, but i wouldn't want to be where we were. i wouldn't go back to where we were again without there being some change in how it was setup. they want what happened on sunday to trigger a safety review. sir chris hoy has been more bullish, calling it a disgrace. there aren't screens to protect both spectators and cyclists. it's going down as a freak accident. but it has happened before. so i don't know how many freak

accidents become a normal accident. and ijust think i dread to think if it had been worse. i just think it should be a proactive decision to try and make it safer before. yeah, before it's a terrible accident. a birmingham 2022 spokesperson said they'd been in regular contact with the colvin family and apologised for any upset the initial wording of their statement had caused. they said a full and detailed accident investigation is underway. meanwhile, the lee valley regional park authority said the velodrome complies with international regulations and that an accident of this kind has never taken place there before. it added... with leading lights from the sport and those who feel lucky to have averted disaster uniting in calls for change, there is a sense if not now, when?

day two on the track and it was the night when athletics came alive. eilish mccolgan roaring to gold in the 10,000 metres. with less than a lap to go it was between her and kenya's irene cheptai, but into the home straight, mccolgan was not going to be denied the biggest title of her career. she's going to do it! eilish mccolgan is the commonwealth champion. after all, gold does run in the family. her mother, liz, won the same title in 1986 and 1990. it's been such an up—and—down year with covid and then another illness and a couple of little niggles at the wrong time and i've never sprinted like that in my entire life. but, honestly, without the crowd i wouldn't have finished like that tonight and i just wanted it so bad. and the british golds kept coming at the alexander stadium. after a personal best in the javelin, gold was in the palm of katarina johnson—thompson's hands, and with just the 800 metres to come, she wouldn't let it go. another lap of honour for kjt

and another commonwealth title. earlier, cannock chase forest hosted the mountain bike cross country and the home crowd were there to see favourite evie richards, and despite a bad back and covid in the build—up, there were hardly any slip—ups as she raced away to gold. but talking of bad backs, watching the amount of weight emily campbell shifts is enough to make anyone feel sore. but the english lifter blew away the rest of the field with back—to—back games records in the snatch, and then the clean and jerk, to take gold. i hope people see how beautiful our sport is and i hope throughout the week you've seen that it doesn't matter what you look like, what shape you are, what size you are, you can pick up a bar and you can do it. on the final night in the pool, northern ireland finally got their hands on some gold. the six times paralympic champion bethany firth adding a commonwealth title to her collection in the 200 metre freestyle. england's ben proud then took gold over 50 metres and scotland's duncan scott won

the 200 metres individual medley. and finally, if you ever fancy competing at the games, rosemary lenton proved it's actually never too late. she took up bowls after retiring, and at the age of 72 won gold for scotland in the women's para—pairs. with her partner pauline wilson, they have a combined age of 130. and not many competitors can say they won gold with their grandchild in attendance. austin halewood, bbc news. so, how does all that leave the medals table? england are still second but they're just six golds behind australia now scotland are fifth after their fantastic day. wales stay eighth and that first gold for northern ireland has moved them up four places to 13th. talking of the goals for wales, we

the effect plastic waste is having on birds around the world has been highlighted in a new study carried out by uk—based scientists. many of the images sent to scientists in scotland show birds nesting in rubbish or tangled up in it. our science correspondent victoria gill has more. a grim but familiar sight in many urban waterways. how many different types of plastic are just floating here? yes, i can see easily, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven. seven or eight different types of plasticjust here. and it's the wildlife that inhabit these waterways that are living with and in our rubbish. these images, submitted by members of the public and collected by scientists, show the global extent of the problem. scientist ask people to upload photographs and reports of birds tangled or nesting in rubbish. we have about 400 reports covering every continent, except antarctica, so literally everywhere. and then covid happened, and all of a sudden we had

all of these submissions of facemasks, surgical gloves. a mask or a ppe item, is that more of an environmental problem than a plastic bag or plastic bottle? yes, with a mask, it's notjust one thing. you think about it, you've got the ear loops which are made of a sort of elastic, you've got sheeting on them, the rigid piece of flexible plastic that fits over your nose, so you've got a whole bunch of ways that wildlife can interact with this. in some cases, like this one in stratford—upon—avon, nature lovers have been able to help. perfect. well done. but this project shows the surge in pandemic—related waste that is ending up in our environment. scientists say that the systems we have for managing that waste cannot cope, and that wildlife and wild spaces are bearing the consequences. victoria gill, bbc news.

david was just eight years old when his dad, pc george taylor, was killed by two escaped prisoners. i remember it like yesterday. such a vivid memory because it was such a traumatic thing as a child. i could tell you what my mum was wearing when she walked into our bedroom to tell us, um...that he wasn't there anymore. do you know, it's hellish hard to hear that as an eight—year—old. but i still see it. but so proud of him. do you know? i know he fought for his life. before his death, george worked with detective sergeant ross hunt, adrian's father. he was murdered in 1983, attacked by three members of the same family during an arrest. i often reflect on it.
8:19 am
he was... he was a man... i described him as a man for all seasons. colleagues used to refer to him as father because if they wanted advice, they would go to my dad for advice. so many people have said that over the years, father. i was 18. i was the youngest in the house. my two brothers had left home. one was in london, one was in canada, and i basically became the man of the house overnight, and very protective of my mother. bryn's daughter — pc nicola hughes — was one of two officers murdered in 2012 when they were lured to a house and attacked. sometimes ten years feels like ten days and ten hours. ithink... there's so much happened in such a long time, but such a short time as well. and it's hard to... it's hard to put it into words how we how we feel after ten years, because your grief changes. there's times when you feel really

proud and there's times _ when you feel emotional. i think pride is the biggest sense because of what she achieved i in that short term of service. earlier this year, bryn launched a campaign to introduce a medal to honour any emergency service worker killed in the line of duty. nicola, my dad and obviously your dad left a legacy anyway. and if we can leave a legacy by pushing this, so it keeps going, it's a win in my book. and it's in perpetuity. it's there forever. we all go to bed - with those thoughts. we all wake up with . those same thoughts. | and sometimes you talk to yourself, | and sometimes you console yourself. and i think if you can look at this tangible memorial — that meansl so much. it does — i absolutely agree. 100%. one of the lasting tributes already in place to honour fallen officers is the uk police memorial at the national memorial arboretum. blown away with the scale of it and the idea behind it.
8:21 am
and it'sjust nice that there's some specific large memorial to contemplate those that aren't here any more. i love the idea of the leaf shape, with the glint — the sun hitting the gold — and itjust, you know, the fallen. that's really what it is. it's the fallen. and it kind of rings true that that's how we should remember them as the fallen, and they should never be forgotten. inspired by such a moving tribute to their loved ones, bryn, david and adrian are united in their dream to see a medal — to honour theirfallen heroes and many others lost in the line of duty. it's as if everything's opened up here and we have that affinity straight away. yeah. like i say, this is almost... we've known each other for years, but when you think about it, we're all fighting for the same thing. absolutely. and it's brought that connection. now we're gradually joining the dots.
8:22 am
uh-huh. yes. and that's the bonus. that understanding of it. we're on the drive for it. absolutely. it's not an individual thing any more, it's a collective. which, for me, feels stronger together. if we stay together we're stronger. yeah, it feels a lot stronger. it isa it is a very moving film. bryn hughes, david taylor and adrian huntjoin us now. as soon as you all three sat down, there is a lovely feeling between there is a lovely feeling between the three of you, you are laughing and you are chatting. it is because you share something you would much prefer not to. how has it been? just meeting and being able to talk and share your experience. iirrut’e’llll meeting and being able to talk and share your experience.— share your experience. we'll share that common _ share your experience. we'll share that common bond, _ share your experience. we'll share that common bond, common - share your experience. we'll share | that common bond, common sense share your experience. we'll share . that common bond, common sense of
