7:47 pm
keely hodgkinson. and going right to the back of the field, this is what keely hodgkinson is good at. she can just celebrate —— accelerates from here. she will always tend to beat her, she is going to come strong, the canyon has got something extra. she's the strongest i've ever seen in the home straight, and she is going to come away to take the gold medal, mary morrow with an incredible performance keely hodgkinson has two settle for silver again. laura muirthrew hodgkinson has two settle for silver again. laura muir threw herself over the line for the bronze, but what a race for or two. cons of 400 metre paste and i'm just not sure she still knows how to run an 800 metres. —— amazing race for mary moraa. goodness me, when she starts to get more experience with how she raises, and by the way, that dance move is brilliant, by the way. just,
7:48 pm
when she went to the back after the first 400 and everyone come pastor i thought what are you doing? she charged, she charged, she charged them i think i said to be for the race, if mary moraa is close to keely hodgkinson at the top of the straight nobody, nobody finishes better than her. she straight nobody, nobody finishes better than her.— straight nobody, nobody finishes better than her. she throws out the rule book, doesn't— better than her. she throws out the rule book, doesn't she? _ better than her. she throws out the rule book, doesn't she? she - better than her. she throws out the rule book, doesn't she? she runs i better than her. she throws out the i rule book, doesn't she? she runs 800 metres and raises the 800 metres an array that other girls don't expect her to do. they were completely thinking 200 metres to go. as we saw, there is laura muirjust there. during a supperfor the line, saw, there is laura muirjust there. during a supper for the line, that's her learning that she got the bronze, fantastic, and england's keely hodgkinson getting the silver. she's a little disappointed with that. she was going for gold, but mary moraa, just too much from her. as he can see, the delight and elation from laura muir. not her natural discipline, a bronze for her and a silverfor natural discipline, a bronze for her and a silver for england's keely hodgkinson. fantastic news. back to

the football. well, manchester city begin the defence of their premier league title away to west ham united tomorrow. the game should see city's new arrival erling haaland make his debut in english football, and ahead of the game he sat down with the premier league's record goalscorer alan shearer to talk about the art of getting the ball in the net. when i score a goal, there is always this feeling... is there anything better? no, i don't think there is, you know? i agree. because it doesn't matter the goal, when you score a goal, it isjust something inside you that don't like... have you always had that feeling? yeah, always. when i was younger, and still, it is this feeling and also this kind of, when you celebrate your first goal, it is like, "this i want to do again." i get this often. scoring one — imagine doing this again. and also this thought about let's say for example you see someone score a hat—trick on saturday. "oh, man, it would be
7:50 pm
nice to do this." and what about the mental side of the game? i read that you work on meditation and things like that? yeah, as a striker i think it is really important to not think too much. if i am going to go into the next game thinking about my miss, the chance i missed last game, it is not good. to go into the game hungry, doesn't matter what happened before. i think about not thinking about too much about it. it is difficult, and then it is about trying. do you think that gives you an edge, doesn't it? if that is true, that means there is something right inside you. it is about finding it as motivation and not some negative kind of going to training like this — it is about coming into training like this. you want to be the best in training today. this is also something that helped me a lot, this meditation outside the pitch, tojust kind of let go. do you feel under pressure, or can you just go out and play your football?
7:51 pm
yeah, of course, it is pressure. i am playing in the champions, the one who won the premier league, so of course there is pressure. but in my head it is about trying to go out on the pitch and smiling as much as i can, trying to enjoy every single minute of it, you know? because i am really lucky to have thisjob and to be here, so i have to enjoy as much as i can. fascinating insights, wasn't a? let's have a quick look at some of the other sports stories today. south africa's ashley buhai leads the women's british open at muirfield. she had a storming third round, which included eight birdies, as she finished on 14 under par. that's five shots clear of the field. french riderjohann zarco clocked a new track record in qualifying at silverstone to secure pole for the british motogp.

7:54 pm
is in the uk at the moment, we are just part of that. it is a great week for women in sports. now the alexander stadium here in birmingham has been overhauled in the four and a half years since the city found out it was staging these games. right now, it holds 30,000 spectators but that'll be reduced to 18,000 going forward. and asjoe lynskey reports as part of our legacy series, the stadium rebuild's also had implications for the surrounding area of perry barr, which was set to be home to the athletes village, before unexpected delays. the beating heart of these games is on the edge of the city. this is perry barr, four miles from new street station where the stadium is transformed. the place around it though is still in development. birmingham hoped perry barr would be the hub of these games, but in four years to prepare, events got in the way. you must stay at home.
7:55 pm
tougher restrictions have come into force in birmingham to try to stop the spread of the virus. in the lockdown, the country set to host the world would have to adapt. this part of perry barr should have been the athletes' village, but with two years of covid setbacks, plans changed. now the participants are spread across the whole region, and this development becomes housing. the very fact that we are acomodating the athletes and the officials at the university of birmingham, the university of warwick and hotels around the national exhibition centre is a model forfuture generations of the commonwealth games and olympic games, because the construction of a village is very, very expensive, pushes up the cost of hosting these events, and the commonwealth games federation are keen to reduce the cost going forward to make these events more affordable for more cities around the commonwealth. the athletes may live elsewhere, but here, the work goes on. the village plans will
7:56 pm
become nearly 1000 homes. it's brought huge disruption and traffic chaos. the stadium here is world—class venue, but for local people, it has come at a price. the price has been a lot of noise, disruption, those things you would expect, but also a sense of almost disappointment at the lack of engagement there's been bring people into this event. it's a running joke about "it will be great when it's finished," and i think this is perhaps another extension of that. it's gone from local track to national emblem, and in years to come, they want the world athletics champs here. most host cities get seven years notice, birmingham had four, and yet, still built it all in the face of the greatest hurdle. 0n on day nine. time for a quick look at the medal table. australia still top
7:57 pm
of the standings, they've had a fantastic games haven't they, with 57 gold medals. but hosts england are catching up... another great day so far, 50 golds for england. scotland are seventh in the table, wales are in tenth place and northern ireland sit in 13th. while we have been on air keely hodgkinson has won silver in the 800 metres, and scott and's laura muir has taken bronze. —— scotland's laura muir has taken bronze. that's all from sportsday. we'll have more throughout the evening. hello there. it's been feeling warm in the sunshine today, and through the rest of this weekend, we're going to stay dry and quite sunny across many parts of the country. we've still got some cloud, maybe some rain to come in some parts of scotland, not necessarily where it's needed most. this is the rainfall accumulation for the next five days, and really no rain to speak of at all across england and wales. it is mostly in the north and northwest of scotland, as we've seen today. and not only that, it's also going to heat up next week across england and wales in particular with a heatwave on the way. now, the temperatures today have
7:58 pm
been more comfortable, getting up to the mid 20s or so in south eastern parts of england. not particularly warm, though, in scotland and northern ireland, where it's quite breezy in scotland, and we're still seeing some cloud and some rain in the north of the country. 0vernight, we'll see some of that rain trickling down into western scotland, very light and patchy. elsewhere, though, we've got clear skies, dry weather, temperatures in rural areas, perhaps 8—9 degrees, but it's going to be milder underneath that cloudy, breezy weather in scotland. and we've still got some patchy light rain to come in western scotland tomorrow, drier and brighterfor the east of the country. some cloud across northern ireland and the far north of england, but some sunshine, too, much more sunshine, again, across the rest of england and wales. and in light winds, it's going to feel very warm. temperatures getting up to 26, maybe even 27 degrees, maybe up a degree or so in scotland and northern ireland. reasonably warm in eastern parts of scotland. start of the week sees, again, the potentialfor some more rain in the highlands and islands. but elsewhere it's dry,
7:59 pm
the winds will be light, and there'll be more strong sunshine and temperatures will continue to rise widely into the mid 20s across england and wales, could be up to 29 degrees in the southeast. what's happening? high pressure again. that's keeping it dry, and it will even start to push any rain away from the far north west of scotland, and it's underneath that high pressure with the ground so dry that it will heat up very quickly, especially across england and wales. gets a bit warmer for scotland and northern ireland, but the higher temperatures are going to be across england and wales, with heat wave developing across many parts of england and wales. by the middle part of the week, it could be 35 degrees in the south east of england in the sunshine.
