technique, confidence, and size of the wave. sounds to me like a bit of a shaggy dog tale. now it's time for a look at the weather with darren bett. hello there. once again, it has been a dry day for the vast majority of the uk and it will stay that way in the next few days at least. we're going to find a bit more cloud across scotland and some rain approaching the far north—west later tonight, but otherwise with clear skies and light winds temperatures will fall away to around 11 or 12 degrees. there are some much warmer nights to come later in the week as temperatures continue to climb. but it's a dry story for most of us again on monday, the rain again is in the highlands and islands where it's been for the past few weeks. elsewhere, dry. nothing more than some fair weather cloud. many places, blue skies, light winds. it will be a little bit cooler, probably, around some coastal areas with some sea breezes,

but temperatures continuing to rise inland, getting close to 30 degrees in the london area on monday afternoon. temperatures will continue to climb through the rest of the week, particularly across england and wales. heatwave conditions developing in many places here, and by friday we could be hitting 36 degrees in the south.

the england women's hockey team has taken one of them, beating australia in the final. there was also a thrilling gold for the england men's 4x100 metre relay, plus a first ever medal in the beach volleyball with the bello twins winning bronze. jo currie has a round—up of the action so far. four years ago it was england's netballers who stole the show at the commonwealth games on the gold coast. today it was the turn of the women's hockey team to light up birmingham. the team's first ever commonwealth gold medal came after a 2—0 win over australia. goals from holly hunt and tess howard securing the victory and a place in history. elsewhere on the penultimate day of the games, there were 44 other gold medals up for grabs, with 15 of them coming on the athletics track. having won the men's 4x100 metres four years ago, england's sights are set firmly on defending their title, and they did it in some style, finishing well clear of trinidad

and england have their first ever commonwealth beach volleyball medal. twins javier and joaquin bello cruised to a historic triumph, taking victory in the bronze medal match to give the birmingham crowd a moment they've never seen before and may never see again. lovely that they went over to cuddle their mum. there was no medal of any colour for england's cricketers after they were hammered in the t20 bronze medal match by new zealand. after posting just 110 for nine in their 20 overs, it always looked to be well below par. sophie devine struck an unbeaten half century as the white ferns eased home with more than eight overs to spare. it's australia against india in the final and look at this, radha yadav showing some excellent awareness to get australian captain meg lanning out at the non—strikers end. australia have set india a target of 162 to win the gold medal and you can watch it live on the bbc sport website. england's netball team will also leave the commonwealth games without a medal after missing out on bronze against new zealand. the defending champions were beaten 55—48 by the silver ferns,

despite beating them by ten goals when the two met in the group stage. the roses fought back in the final quarter but couldn't overcome earlier errors which saw them lose their grip on the game. australia and jamaica play for the gold medal later. england coachjess thirlby was optimistic about the future. there is a lot of positives to come from theirs. with exposed people to their first commonwealth games, we have an exciting group of players in our programme who haven't even made this 12 who i'm sure you will see at the world cup next year so there is a lot to be proud but we want to confirm that with results on the court and we did some good stuff leading into the tournament, we did some brilliant stuff but when it mattered most we have fallen short. plenty more action from the commonwealth games including a dramatic finish in the men's road race where wales�* geraint thomas

made an audacious break for victory with a mile to go, but couldn't quite hang on... after three and a half hours of dramatic racing around warwick it came down to a sprint finish with new zealand's aaron gate claiming his fourth gold of the games ahead of south africa's daryl impey. scotland's finn crockett claimed bronze by half a wheel's length. scotland's neah evans finished second in the women's road race behind australia's georgia baker. evans — who put a career as a vet on hold to concentrate on cycling — won two medals on the track at the games too. there was further success for england in the table tennis as the hosts added to their tally. the duo of paul drinkhall and liam pitchford saw off india, winning 3—2, to retain the title they won on the gold coast back in 2018 against the very same opponents.
