hello again. the weather has a habit of not only playing a big part in cricket in this country, but also telling the story suitably well. the deluge at lord's this afternoon came after — and who knows, maybe in response to england's pretty dismal start to the first test against south africa, with the home side 116—6 when the rain came on an opening day that began with special recognition for a cricketing pioneer. joe wilson has more. gates were meant to be opened, that was always a perspective of rachel flynt. unveiled here by her son, she is now the first woman to have a permanent memorial at lord's. the traditional home of cricket. she spent over two decades playing for england and a lifetime promoting women's sport. the mcc, which owns

ijust wanted i just wanted to ijust wanted to have fun here. we spoke before the team event, i had no expectations. i was quite nervous but i think i was nervous because i wanted to do well, and i did. but i don't know what to say, like, commonwealth champion, now european champion, just thanks to god. i couldn't have done it by myself. and, yeah... it's crazy! what a performance that was. and it wasn't britain's only diving success of the day — earlier there had been a silver in the synchronised diving for grace reed and james heatley. now the edinburgh duo won gold at the commonwealth games in birmingham just a few weeks ago, but they were just a few weeks ago, but they were just etched out into silver by germany. but even so, another success for them and what is proving a hugely successful summer for britain's divers. bind a hugely successful summer for britain's divers.— britain's divers. and the water theme continues _ britain's divers. and the water theme continues because - britain's divers. and the water. theme continues because those britain's divers. and the water- theme continues because those in the pool for a little longer have also been delivering medals? hat pool for a little longer have also been delivering medals?- pool for a little longer have also been delivering medals? not a bad da for been delivering medals? not a bad day for britain's _ been delivering medals? not a bad

this afternoon, ryan giggs broke down in the witness box as the former manchester united manager called the 1st of november, 2000 2020, for allegedly assaulting kate greville and his former girlfriend, and his sister, the worst night of his life. earlier, mr giggs had told thejury that during intimate moments, things could get rough between the couple and sometimes resulted in bruising and scratches, but these moments were always consensual. the court also heard that after one argument, in which holiday plans were cancelled, mr giggs sent an e—mail to kate greville, titling the e—mail with a very offensive word — something his own barrister described as "truly appalling language". mr giggs said today he was upset and couldn't believe he used the word toward someone he loved. he said there was no excuse for it. the prosecution were allowed a number of text exchanges between mr giggs and kate greville during which they would regularly block each other on messaging platforms, and have arguments
