the temperature didn't drop where the temperature didn't drop below 19 last night in london. some heavy bursts of rain in scotland and northern ireland followed by sunshine and if you showers in the north—west. this rain doesn't look like much but could be heavy as it sinks into northern england, just one or two air showers. the temperature tomorrow similar to what we had today so looking at around 24, 25 at best. second half of the weekend, the best of the sunshine in scotland while those showers move away, sunshine for northern england and perhaps northern ireland but further south cloud coming from the atlantic, thick enough to give us pockets of light rain and drizzle developing through the day and as a result the temperature may not be quite as high on sunday. maybe wetter weather on sunday night and on monday the tangle of weather fronts sweeps eastwards, all our weather coming in from the atlantic for next week but doesn't look like a lot of whether to head our way.
6:31 pm
most of the wet weather next week will come on monday and after that fairly typical late summer fair. some sunshine and dry weather around and the temperature some sunshine and dry weather around and the temperature near some sunshine and dry weather around and the temperature near normal some sunshine and dry weather around and the temperature near normal for the time of year. thank you, darren. you can keep up with all the latest developments on the bbc news website but the news continues here on bbc ones wejoin their but the news continues here on bbc ones we join their colleagues across the nations and regions for the news where you are, i will be back at ten, untilthen, have a where you are, i will be back at ten, until then, have a very good evening. hello and welcome to sportsday. england are skittled at lord's, as their tactic backfires against south africa. . ~' , ~' their tactic backfires against south africa. ~ , ~ .,

lost to wickets before lunch. it is very interesting to see the south african captain use his spin bowler so early. the south african attack has great quality and variety. then it was over to the fast bowlers. johnny bairstow, and so dominant in the summer, zero and 18, he perished, on the boundary. he will attack, he will be positive to the last. the strategy under ben stokes of trying to dominate matches wherever they can, that is going to continue. this was clear when we heard from ben stokes when he spoke to the media shortly after the close of pay. we can hear from to the media shortly after the close of pay. we can hearfrom him now. over the three days, whenever they were batting or bowling, whatever we threw _ were batting or bowling, whatever we threw at— were batting or bowling, whatever we

short. the next aspect is this general approach of england. i think it is really hard to dominate bowlers when they are as good as the south africans. am i being old—fashioned and suggesting that there might be periods of play where england just have to go on the defensive about? ben stokes would tell us, don't be so typically british with that doom and gloom attitude. there is still two tennis matches to win, but if the next matches to win, but if the next match is in full like this one, i'm not sure how long the strategy will stand up. not sure how long the strategy will stand u -. , not sure how long the strategy will stand u. , ., stand up. there is one huge positive. — stand up. there is one huge positive. you _ stand up. there is one huge positive, you have - stand up. there is one huge positive, you have the - stand up. there is one huge - positive, you have the weekend off! we're heading into the final weekend at the multi—sport european championships in germany. great britain are second in the medal table after more success today, and there's still a busy evening ahead in munich. nesta mcgregor is there for us, nesta. a lot to look forward to? good

problem that saw her limp out of the 100 metres final. she explained that her period caused cramping during the race — she wants everyone to be more comfortable talking about female health. more people need to actually research this because it's, huge, and they don't always talk about it but sometimes, you see girls who have been so consistent and there's a random dip, and the behind—the—scenes, there really struggling. and it's like, what's that? that's random. just doing more because yeah, i feel like they have a million different ways to combat things but with women, there just needs to be more funding in that area. dr rebecca robinson specialises in sports and exercise medecine and told me about some of the problems that have held back research into female athlete health. we're learning more about the menstrual cycle.
6:42 pm
it is quite a hard area to research, and traditionally a lot of studies have not included females, for example, because the hormones are difficult to track, or they are looking for other areas of health, they have not looked particularly at females because they want to exclude those changes in the mental cycle from affecting our results. of course, the cycle changes in the month for most females, and different symptoms affect different people, and there are lots of reasons perhaps one that has not been researched as much to date. that research is becoming quite exciting, because internationally and certainly in the uk, there are interesting studies that are going to be able to be applied to our female athletes at the elite level, and that can filter through to how you manage female athlete health in grassroots and in the community. i think it is very interesting to hear an athlete speaking out, and it's great to be able to speak out
6:43 pm
in a major championships, and very important, and that must be heard, and that message is something that we are hearing from athletes at all levels. it amplifies that need for us all to work together, and take the research we have done so far, so we need to be better, we need to apply it on the track and field. i was quite interested to read about the different symptoms that you are picking up on there. how does it manifest itself differently in different athletes? the menstrual cle is a different athletes? the menstrual cycle is a really — different athletes? the menstrual cycle is a really individual - different athletes? the menstrual cycle is a really individual cycle i cycle is a really individual cycle for every women, what is interesting is that you can have is someone whose periods affect them in certain way, or perhaps very minimally at one stage of the career, and over age that can in time. it's very difficult have a routine that can change as they get older, after having children. it can individually different. forsome having children. it can individually different. for some women they will experience really difficult symptoms like bloating, cramps and pain,
6:44 pm
without leaving the sport is not an option, and one of the reasons it is important to listen to someone who has had difficulties at the very elite side is that that same set of symptoms might affect someone at a much younger age in school pe, and that might make them not want to participate because of the fat we have not talked about it, and addressed it from a young age. it is really important, and again we do have some women for whom the symptoms are not particularly significant, and can manage well. for those, a significant proportion of people, for whom it is disabling at times during that time of the month in terms of what they want to do and be able to participate in, they do need to make sure that we can understand better and address the symptoms. anthonyjoshua and oleksandr usyk have weighed in for tomorrow night's heavyweight rematch in saudi arabia. joshua is over a stone
