good evening and welcome to the programme. we'll start with football disorder in england and wales, which has reached an eight year high according to home office figures. there were over 2000 arrests at football matches the highest number since the 2013/11; season. last seasons* disorder included players being approached after pitch invasions. incidents were reported at more than half of all matches played. which means they were up by 60% last season compared with the 2018/19 the last full season before covid—19. we can speak now to our sports news correspondent laura scott. very concerning figures forfootball, there are huge rises, why is this? yes, exactly. not entirely surprising. i've spoken to some people within football today and they say it backs up what they saw last season, what they were expecting. we had seen some

midseason figures last season that showed a rise in football disorder, and that we have the policies and statistics, it shows that weighing picture. police say that the 2198 for depaul arrests last season highlight a significant rise in football related criminalisty. as you mentioned, that number was nearly 60% higher than the 2018—19 season, the last one before the covered pandemic and the highest level since 2014. at the same time, there was of course, as you mentioned, rising reported incidents, more than half of them, and the most common incidents where fans carrying pyrotechnics entering the cells onto the pitch. now, clearly, we sought the end of last season from a number of pitch invasions, the number of pitch invasions, the number of pitch invasions rose by 127% compared with 2018-19. invasions rose by 127% compared with 2018—19. there were 74 incidents being investigated of online hate crime. there was also more than 500 new banning orders issued —— issued.

during construction for the world cup in qatar. some have said these moves simply don't go far enough. this is a really, really difficult one. they don't want to look as if they are telling qatar how to behave, particularly on a day where it's been announced that football —related arrests back home and are at their highest in eight years, but there are many lgbt q at their highest in eight years, but there are many lgbt 0 plus fans who said they simply want to be going to qatar because homosexuality is illegal in the country. it is going to be really interesting to see how both southgate and navigate these tricky issues. let's have a quick look at some of the other stories making the sports news today. manchester united have announced a net loss of 100 and 15 point five million pounds for the 2021/22 season, even though revenues rose by nearly 20%. the club's debt also went up to 500 and 14.9 million pounds this year an increase of more than a fifth. former west ham united captain mark noble is to rejoin the club next year in a newly created role

and wales cricket board, there would be a reduction in the number of teams in the top division to six meaning they'd only play ten games instead of 14, and new schedules for the one day cup, t20 blast and the hundred would be implemented to allow a greater balance between red and white ball cricket. the counties are being asked to express their votes by november, and two thirds will have to agree for the changes to be implemented for the 2024 season. 0ur sports editor dan roan spoke to former england captain and former director of cricket at the ecb sir andrew strauss who led the review, and asked him what he would like to see these changes achieve. i think historically, our performance at an international level has been below what we would like, so if we want to be the best team in the world across all formats sustainably, we have never really done that, we think that it times, we've had a lot of moments where we've had a lot of moments where we've been brilliant, but we haven't been brilliant for very long,
6:46 pm
whereas if you look like a team like australia, and elongated period of time, they've been very good across all formats, so that should at least be our ambition, to beat australia, let's put it that way, and aligned to that, the game of cricket is moving very quickly. so these tectonic plates everybody keeps talking about, the rise of domestic franchise tournaments around the world. our players have never had more opportunities outside the international game, and we need to be cognizant and recognise that and creates recommendations to make sure that we are able to both provide opportunities and financial reward for our players to keep them involved in cricket. the third one is around the domestic game, such an important part of this. the breeding ground of our next england players. it's obviously hugely, you know, important to a lot of people who follow the domestic game that the current schedule and structure just isn't working. we've heard that loud and clear from a isn't working. we've heard that loud and clearfrom a huge number of

people. so this is about providing solutions to that problem as well stop at some of these are more contentious than others, and the two in particular, the ones that need to go to counties for a vote and approval, in terms of the county championship, the headline grabbing proposal is that it will begin later and it will be in one, it will run throughout the summer months as to —— as opposed to it being fractured or split. there will be fewer matches. why will that help the game, and the obvious question, i suppose, what you say to a county that faces the prospect of losing four revenue making matches? brute that faces the prospect of losing four revenue making matches? we are t in: to four revenue making matches? we are trying to produce _ four revenue making matches? we are trying to produce highball_ four revenue making matches? we are trying to produce highball red - trying to produce highball red cricket — trying to produce highball red cricket. we went to raise the standard. _ cricket. we went to raise the standard, which is why we are are posing _ standard, which is why we are are posing a — standard, which is why we are are posing a 16— standard, which is why we are are posing a 16 first division high standard, more intensity, closerto the demands of international crickets _ the demands of international crickets. at the moment, all of the data and _ crickets. at the moment, all of the

new methods or a new methodology, so this is an opportunity to do that. they are just recommendations, such doesn't necessarily mean that everything that has been recommended in this review is going to happen. that is for the people who make the decisions at the top of the game to decide, and for everyone to a line behind. and once those decisions are made, i think it's important that we as cricketers and supporters skipped behind it in order to make the england national team a better team. meanwhile surrey have wrapped up their second county championship title in five years after beating yorkshire by ten wickets at the oval. surrey needed just 55 for victory and former england opener rory burns scored the winning the runs. second placed hampshire had already lost to kent and surrey*s 22 point win took them 27 clear at the top of division one an unassailable lead with just one game left. we've tried to bring this approach to every— we've tried to bring this approach to every day cricket and the amount
