of the english countryside. hello, and welcome to the travel show, coming to you this week from beautiful tarifa in southern pain. perched on the southernmost tip of continental europe, just 1a kilometres from north africa, tarifa is the gateway between these two continent. its position leaves the small spanish town open to a blasting from the winds that shape its rugged coastline. in this part of the world there are two prevailing winds. one
5:33 am
is the mellow consistent wind and the other one is this bad boy, which storms in from the east and it is this coastline and when it does, all the best kite servers from around the world want to be right here. and yet while a windy beach break might not seem like your idea of a dream trip, it is for a mass influx of kite servers that see the population of this once sleepy town over triple in size during the windy summer months. and this year will be bigger than ever as the world's needing kite surfers compete to fly the highest in the world's ever big air competition hosted right here in tarifa. the winds here can reach up to 60 knots with the athletes expertly manipulating it to fly over 30 metres high. i have headed over to the leaderboard to see how
5:34 am
the competition is shaping up. so the best of the best kitesurfers in the world are competing here today? est} competing here today? 5: competitors but competing here today? 52 competitors but they competing here today? 15121 competitors but they are divided in five divisions. we have 2a men and i2 divided in five divisions. we have 2a men and 12 women. it is an elimination system so they are riding in groups of two or three riders at the same time and then the winner advances to the next round. we will end of the day he was going to write for the final and take the crown.— write for the final and take the crown. there is a reason why the _ the crown. there is a reason why the wind _ the crown. there is a reason why the wind is _ the crown. there is a reason why the wind is so _ the crown. there is a reason i why the wind is so consistently good here in tarifa. judging commentator lewis explains why. the air is so special because it is so close to the north of africa, what happens with the geology of the land is these mountains push up and you've got the strong wind that it comes in, you've got to think of an hourglass where the sand rushes through the middle, you that's what happens here in both directions either from the atlantic or the mediterranean, thatis atlantic or the mediterranean, that is why so that is why it is always windy and so strong. i think we are going to see
5:35 am
something very special later. now that the winds are getting stronger and the competition is really heating up, i want to know how the athletes are doing. congratulations! looked incredible up there, what is it like out there? the incredible up there, what is it like out there?— like out there? the wind is pumping. _ like out there? the wind is pumping. it's _ like out there? the wind is pumping, it's like - like out there? the wind is pumping, it's like 30 - like out there? the wind is| pumping, it's like 30 knots like out there? the wind is - pumping, it's like 30 knots and we are flying early high blue it isjust an we are flying early high blue it is just an unreal feeling stopping when i'm doing my best trips it is like i feel like superman on the water. its ureat superman on the water. its great energy on the beach, the wind _ great energy on the beach, the wind is — great energy on the beach, the wind is super— great energy on the beach, the wind is super strong _ great energy on the beach, the wind is super strong and - great energy on the beach, the wind is super strong and that. wind is super strong and that is exactly— wind is super strong and that is exactly what _ wind is super strong and that is exactly what we _ wind is super strong and that is exactly what we are - wind is super strong and thatl is exactly what we are looking for so — is exactly what we are looking for so hope _ is exactly what we are looking for so hope ollie _ is exactly what we are looking for so hope ollie i— is exactly what we are looking for so hope ollie i continue i is exactly what we are looking for so hope ollie i continue toj for so hope ollie i continue to make — for so hope ollie i continue to make it — for so hope ollie i continue to make it and _ for so hope ollie i continue to make it and ride _ for so hope ollie i continue to make it and ride in— for so hope ollie i continue to make it and ride in the - for so hope ollie i continue to make it and ride in the final. make it and ride in the final soon — make it and ride in the final soon. ., ., ., ., soon. congratulations and good luck for the _ soon. congratulations and good luck for the next _ soon. congratulations and good luck for the next stage. - soon. congratulations and good luck for the next stage. and - luck for the next stage. and yet the mediaeval town of tarifa and its surrounding beaches were not always home to this global and flat of tourism. tarifa is a really bustling town and that certainly wasn't always the

case. in fact so few tourists came here because why would you want to sit on the beach with such a wind blowing all the time? and then in the 1980s the world came to love tarifa's wind and everything changed. tell me about the first time you came to tarifa. aha, tell me about the first time you came to tarifa.- you came to tarifa. a came through _ you came to tarifa. a came through this _ you came to tarifa. a came through this entrance - you came to tarifa. a came through this entrance with l you came to tarifa. a came i through this entrance with my car all of boards and then we got stuck in one of these small street. in got stuck in one of these small street. , ., u, , street. in your car? it is absolutely _ street. in your car? it is absolutely tiny! - street. in your car? it is absolutely tiny! i - street. in your car? it is absolutely tiny! i have l street. in your car? it is - absolutely tiny! i have come to the old town to meet michele who in 1982 left his hometown and chased the wind to wind up in tarifa to open the town's first ever kite surfing school. why were you coming to tarifa? i can just searching the wind. wind every day, long beach, sandy beach, nobody. it is perfect for us. in sandy beach, nobody. it is perfect for us.— sandy beach, nobody. it is perfect for us. in fact before kite surfing _ perfect for us. in fact before kite surfing came _ perfect for us. in fact before kite surfing came to - perfect for us. in fact before kite surfing came to tarifa i kite surfing came to tarifa there was an exodus of locals

serious. manuel, hello. so tell me, what we have here? garum paste was the main export of this area, one of spain's best preserved archaeological sites, revered over 2000 years for this fermented fruit preserved which favoured the food of the time. so if you were an ancient roman person you would have been very happy to find us on your table? and now the best chefs of the area are bringing back this ancient treat for modern day

audiences. it's just a very savoury, a deep savoury flavour. i can see why the romans would have enjoyed to have this on their food, especially if it were boiled. just how important is this resurrection? how does it feel to you to be rediscovering these ancient tastes?

strategically placed in south—eastern turkey, high above the roots connect thing turkey to syria and iraq is the ancient city of mardin. due to its position this place has lived under many different rules from the babylonians to the persian but we are here to check out how the mardin biennial looks to encapsulate these influences into new exciting works of art. here is a little bit of interesting info stopping the festival isn't centred in one place, rather it is spread about various culturally important sites around the town so visitors are ex— acted and encouraged to go and visit all

of mardin. tonight where we are going for the grand opening is the german headquarters which was used by the germans during world war i as part of their alliance with the ottoman empire. and so after the opening we go! part of the appeal of mardin is its hilltop location meaning its buildings are built in a tiered system more commonly seen and the theatre or sports stadium. it may look pretty but you better pack your walking shoes. after upping my step count i arrived at the intended destination. and its impact! i didn't think it would be because it took ages to get here, it is in the middle of nowhere but look! i am not the world's number one expert on the arts, but they are willing to have my mind opened. there are so many nooks and crannies full of art, you really have to go searching. is it in here? no! no for once.
5:45 am
what does this mean? look, come and look. it is karl marx, isn't it? see, i did get it right, it is karl marx. but when i got talking to some of the artist, i started to understand what they were exhibiting and what it meant for the region but also, beyond that. right. what is this, what can you tell me about this exhibit? , , can you tell me about this exhibit?— exhibit? so basically this iece is exhibit? so basically this piece is called _ exhibit? so basically this piece is called oz - exhibit? so basically this - piece is called oz microscope, because of the nematic landscapes over the past four years i've been collecting data relating to water and i've built up a composition, a graphic musical score. 50 built up a composition, a graphic musical score. so the sound correlates _ graphic musical score. so the sound correlates to _ graphic musical score. so the sound correlates to the - graphic musical score. so the sound correlates to the data | sound correlates to the data thatis sound correlates to the data that is being collated. and i'm manipulating it as well. set, that is being collated. and i'm manipulating it as well.- manipulating it as well. a lot ofthe manipulating it as well. a lot of the companies _ manipulating it as well. a lot of the companies are - manipulating it as well. a lot of the companies are facing i of the companies are facing water crisis and they are not able to call their systems down. so it's causing, you know, electrical disruptions.

5:47 am
the festival's main theme. big part of the thing is to do with globalisation as a gesture for border crossing and a gesture that was quite universal and was an appeal to reach out to the other across barriers of all kinds, cultural, political, linguistic. the south—eastern region in turkey is a mix between the kurdish people and other groups as well. the geography is sort of like already a cultural melting pot. itjust makes sense, it's like asking for it in some ways, and ready to be the receptacle for that kind of utterance. because it perfectly _ that kind of utterance. because it perfectly reflects _ that kind of utterance. because it perfectly reflects the - it perfectly reflects the globalisation that you're looking for to somatically put out there?— looking for to somatically put out there?_ -- - out there? precisely. -- thematically. _ out there? precisely. -- thematically. it - out there? precisely. -- thematically. it is - out there? precisely. -- thematically. it is a - out there? precisely. --| thematically. it is a great experience but the city's which culture is here all year round, from its people to its unique architecture scattered across the slopes of this ancient city, mardin itself is truly a work of art.

find a whole range of amazing travel content from the bbc. until next time, from e christa larwood and the rest of the travel show team here in tarifa, it's goodbye. —— from me. hello. the autumn equinox happened on friday, and saturday is going to be ourfirst full day of autumn. the skies are pretty clear at the moment, and the weekend, how's it looking? actually, not too bad. there will be a few showers around, but predominantly sunny spells. so, this is what it looks like out there right now. yes, a few showers around, but generally clear across most of the uk through the early hours of saturday, and the temperatures ranging from close to freezing in the scottish glens, around ten in liverpool, and 12 degrees in the south.
5:55 am
