on the 17th of august, worcester confirmed they remained in dialogue with hmrc over the threat of a winding—up petition over an unpaid tax bill of approximately 6 million pounds. by the end of august, players and staff were warned that they wouldn't be paid on time and some handed in their notice. on the 21st of september worcester were given a deadline by the rfu to prove they have a "credible" plan for the future. five days later they missed the deadline, they were suspended from playing matches, both the men and women's teams, and wrfc trading ltd was put into administration. today, the part of the club that holds the players and some staff contracts — that's wrfc players ltd — was wound up in the high court, with players and staff contracts terminated meaning they can leave. the club now expects to have its suspension from the rest the club now expects of the gallagher premiership season and enforced relegation to the championship confirmed by the rfu. it all led to this tweet from the warriors director of rugby steve diamond: who's called it the darkest day for english rugby.

premiership rugby is facing serious questions about it's business model. this is about more than just the impact of the pandemic. dr dan plumley is a sports finance expert at sheffield hallam university. if you look at rugby union and rugby league and cricket, all sports a bad financial problems in the past that individual club level. that is symptomatic of what we see in professional team sports, they are loss—making institutions often propped up by wealthy benefactors who are willing to put the bill. not being able to pay that debt is the problem. we have to look at the figures in the context of the club, and who they are. that is not unusual in professional team sports. it is not necessarily the debt that is the issue, but as a compounding factor of rising costs, looking to balance that with increases in revenue, looking at the pandemic and

members of the public. they found the rugby players faced more than twice the risk of developing neurodegenerative diseases such as dementia, parkinson's and motor neurone disease. all sport has to question its relationship with head injuries and head impacts, and rugby is doing that. rugby is trying to figure out ways to improve the game, to reduce the risk of head injuries and head impacts. i think it's a slow pace of change, and data like this today suggests that the rate of change should be quicker. there are currently young men and women who are concerned about sport. a study by the same glasgow university team led to concerns about the effect that repeatedly heading a ball might have on the brains of professional footballers, and as the evidence of a link between head impacts and illness grows, campaigners are calling for sport's ruling bodies to move faster.

we need to change how we play these games to minimise risk to the head. that means changing the rules when we identify rules that can be changed that would minimise the number of hits to the head. it also means that at pro level we are no longer playing 11 months a year with your leap year and international tours. we are learning from people like steve thompson but that is taking too many hits to the head and it can destroy your mental well—being by your performance. by yourforties, and nobody is going to step forward to keep playing this game once we realise how widespread this is. in a statement, world rugby said it was committed to making the sport the most progressive in the world on player welfare. but some will ask how a game like professional rugby, that thrives on collisions between heavily built players, can eliminate the risk of concussion and head impacts without changing the very nature of the game itself.
