the uk though throughout the weekend, towards southern and eastern england, you may well stay dry. thanks, nick. and that's bbc news at six on wednesday the 5th of october. the news continues here on bbc one, as now it's time tojoin our colleagues across the nations and regions for the news where you are. goodnight. hello and welcome to sportsday, with me, chetan pathak this wednesday night. coming up on the programme: described as their darkest day — worcester warriors players and staff are to have their contracts terminated, following part of the club being wound up in the high court. it has been a very tough hour, but it has been an even tougher few months. conor benn*s fight with chris eubankjr is in doubt following benn*s failed drugs test. we'll tell you what british boxing's

governing body had to say today. and it's another big night in the champions league as chelsea, looking for their first win in the competion, take on ac milan. also coming up on the programme before 7: the vote for the bbc women's footballer of the year is now open — we'll tell you the five nominees you can pick your winnerfrom. welcome along, thank you forjoining us. we start tonight with rugby union, and the continuing crisis at worcester warriors. today the company which holds the contracts of players and some staff has been liquidated in the high court. it's been a devastating time for all associated with the club. how did we get here?
6:32 pm
on the 17th of august, worcester confirmed they remained in dialogue with hmrc over the threat of a winding—up petition over an unpaid tax bill of approximately 6 million pounds. by the end of august, players and staff were warned that they wouldn't be paid on time and some handed in their notice. on the 21st of september worcester were given a deadline by the rfu to prove they have a "credible" plan for the future. five days later they missed the deadline, they were suspended from playing matches, both the men and women's teams, and wrfc trading ltd was put into administration. today, the part of the club that holds the players and some staff contracts — that's wrfc players ltd — was wound up in the high court, with players and staff contracts terminated meaning they can leave. the club now expects to have its suspension from the rest the club now expects of the gallagher premiership season and enforced relegation to the championship confirmed by the rfu. it all led to this tweet from the warriors director of rugby steve diamond: who's called it the darkest day for english rugby.

we thought we could turn the tanker around but it's ended up like the titanic, sadly. the ship has sunk, the captains are nowhere to be seen. players are feeling the same way too. joe batley spke to our sports editor, dan roan. sad, as that word is, it's probably overwhelming feeling. disappointed and let down this properly another one. let down in the sense that, as a player, as a fan of worcester, how could moore not be done to try and save the club? i have had a tough phone call with my partner, explaining our worst fears have come true. seeing the boy *s faces today, it's been very emotional, and the last few months have been tough. i
6:34 pm
have had a couple of cries in the car on the way home thinking about how i'm going to explain this to my partner who has my one—year—old son. it's been a very tough hour, but it has been an even tougher few months. is it hard to believe that, in the premiership, there is a club with the amount of support this club has, that has found itself in this predicament?— that has found itself in this predicament? that has found itself in this redicament? ~ , , , predicament? when i signed my first contract i never _ predicament? when i signed my first contract i never thought _ predicament? when i signed my first contract i never thought this - predicament? when i signed my first contract i never thought this was - predicament? when i signed my first contract i never thought this was a i contract i never thought this was a possibility. for it potentially to end nowhere near on my terms with anything to do with what i've done on the rugby pitch is quite shocking. i know something needs to change, because we can't keep having people's livelihoods at stake. we can't have legacies and clubs with so much rich history go down the drain.
6:35 pm
premiership rugby is facing serious questions about it's business model. this is about more than just the impact of the pandemic. dr dan plumley is a sports finance expert at sheffield hallam university. if you look at rugby union and rugby league and cricket, all sports a bad financial problems in the past that individual club level. that is symptomatic of what we see in professional team sports, they are loss—making institutions often propped up by wealthy benefactors who are willing to put the bill. not being able to pay that debt is the problem. we have to look at the figures in the context of the club, and who they are. that is not unusual in professional team sports. it is not necessarily the debt that is the issue, but as a compounding factor of rising costs, looking to balance that with increases in revenue, looking at the pandemic and
6:36 pm
how that has wiped out one of the bigger streams for premiership rugby clubs in match day revenue over the last couple of years, we get the situation we are in where everything just collided. you need to focus more holistically on the overall management of the club across a number of financial and sporting indicators. notjust looking at debt indicators. notjust looking at debt in isolation. it's not just worcester in the spotlight. wasps have asked for more time to resolve their financial problems so they can avoid a similar fate to worcester. wasps head coach lee blackett says he's feeling confident about the club's future, with a "number of potential investors and funders" coming forward. during these tough times we want to show how special this club is and what this club means to us. i think it would be amazing to see a big crowd there. it would be amazing for everyone to show what a special club

there is that added motivation that maybe i will play differently, whatever it is. every game there is a point to prove, there is pressure for us, there is pressure to win and perform well. it is going to be exactly the same, notjust perform well. it is going to be exactly the same, not just for perform well. it is going to be exactly the same, notjust for me, but for every single player. we are going to want to prove a point, and we are doing well in this group so far, a win and a draw, so you want to continue that and get another three points. manchester city will be looking to maintain their 100% record in this season's competition when they host fc copenhagen. the champions league trophy is the only bit of silverware which has eluded pep guardiola at city so far, but he's hoping the addition of the man of the moment, erling haaland, could prove to be the missing piece in the jigsaw. a day on from a report which found sexual misconduct and emotional abuse was "systemic" in us women's

football, one of the country's players crystal dunn has said she hopes it leads to healing and change. speaking ahead of the friendly against england at wembley on friday, dunn admitted it's been a difficult time: i would be lying if i said we were doing well. we are getting through it, ithink doing well. we are getting through it, i think a lot of us are trying to find joy in playing this game. what is happening in the us is not a us issue, unfortunately this is something that is currently going on in multiple leagues, and i do think changes on the horizon. i think this report coming out was kind of the nail in the coffin, and it allowed, it is going to allow a lot of accountability that has not really taken place. i am quite hopeful that the healing phase can i really take place. forthe the healing phase can i really take place. for the last year it has been this really awkward grey space where people are trying to heal but waiting on results, and now the results are public and open for everyone to see, there is no hiding

next to calls for sport to take head injuries more seriously, and to reduce the risk to players. it follows a study of top level rugby players which has found they face a much greater risk of developing brain conditions such as dementia, parkinson's and motor neurone disease. the study was carried out by the same glasgow university team that identified a higher risk of the same conditions among footballers. our health correspondent dominic hughes has more: playing contact sports like rugby always comes with an element of risk. but in recent years, there have been growing concerns about what effect repeated head impacts might have on the brain. now a new study throws fresh light on the risks to brain health of top level rugby players. researchers looked at the medical records of more than 400 scottish male rugby players who represented their country. they compared them to 1,200 matched

members of the public. they found the rugby players faced more than twice the risk of developing neurodegenerative diseases such as dementia, parkinson's and motor neurone disease. all sport has to question its relationship with head injuries and head impacts, and rugby is doing that. rugby is trying to figure out ways to improve the game, to reduce the risk of head injuries and head impacts. i think it's a slow pace of change, and data like this today suggests that the rate of change should be quicker. there are currently young men and women who are concerned about sport. a study by the same glasgow university team led to concerns about the effect that repeatedly heading a ball might have on the brains of professional footballers, and as the evidence of a link between head impacts and illness grows, campaigners are calling for sport's ruling bodies to move faster.

we need to change how we play these games to minimise risk to the head. that means changing the rules when we identify rules that can be changed that would minimise the number of hits to the head. it also means that at pro level we are no longer playing 11 months a year with your leap year and international tours. we are learning from people like steve thompson but that is taking too many hits to the head and it can destroy your mental well—being by your performance. by yourforties, and nobody is going to step forward to keep playing this game once we realise how widespread this is. in a statement, world rugby said it was committed to making the sport the most progressive in the world on player welfare. but some will ask how a game like professional rugby, that thrives on collisions between heavily built players, can eliminate the risk of concussion and head impacts without changing the very nature of the game itself.

dominic hughes, bbc news. former england hooker steve thompson was part of the world cup winning side of 2003. he was diagnosed with early—onset dementia in 2020 and believes there'll be a surge in cases among rugby players, and that more must be done to protect children who take up the sport: i'm really scared, it is just getting worse. we have only scratched the surface. if there are hundreds there will be thousands, and it is really worrying how it has been kept so quiet for so long. there has been a problem there, and it has been bubbling away, and now it has been bubbling away, and now it has been bubbling away, and now it has burst. hopefully with us coming out we have helped lots people out. three people contacted me last weekend that they are struggling. marriages are splitting up, but now they can understand that there is a problem, can go, you can have the scans, you can see the damage, and suddenly there is a reason for it. once you see that,
