good afternoon. it is much wetter across scotland, difficult on the roads through the rest of this afternoon, that rain feeding and more on the east of scotland too, and we will see some of that rain feeding into parts of north—west england before it gets dark, feeling quite pleasant in the sunshine, continuing to the south—east. very wet this evening in north—west going further south towards east anglia and the morning. clearer skies behind, and a cooler night, plenty of showers running into western scotland, strong winds for northern scotland, strong winds for northern scotland, northern and western isles, 60 mph gusts before they slowly ease tomorrow. may see a shower in the north, very few and far between, and after that rain clears away from east anglia and the south—east, by the end of the morning, plenty of sunshine to come in the afternoon. hello this is bbc news.
2:31 pm
the headlines: russia investigates how and what caused the explosion that severely damaged its state—of—the—art — and well defended bridge to crimea. officials in the ukrainian city of zaporizhzia, say 17 people have been killed by a russian missile strike on an apartment block. former uk culture secretary, nadine dorries says prime minister liz truss needs to change course if she wants to keep the party together and avoid facing a "wipeout" at the next general election. police in ireland have named the ten people who died in an explosion at a petrol station in donegal among them a father and his five year—old daughter. now on bbc news we are england: the barbershop. a warning this programme details with mental health issues including suicide.
2:32 pm
when i go and see fabio, at least two or three times a week, i still can't believe that my son is in this mausoleum. ijust remember the policeman calling over my mum and dad and theyjust said the words you just don't want to hear. ijust remember falling to the floor, just screaming that it wasn't true. i feel so sorry for him. a 29—year—old man can i think he's got no way out and that's his only option. we need to talk about suicide.
2:33 pm
since losing fabio, myself, his family and some of the barbers in here have decided that we want to take part in a mental health training programme. that's because we want to do something about this and we don't want anyone else to go through the same thing. i think it speaks for itself why it's so important — l it's about preventing the early demise of somebody - taking their own life. too many young men are dying. not enough people are listening.
2:34 pm
yes, what's going on, gs? miss 0livia! so this is liv, she's the manageress of escobarbers, an anchor, the g. so i'll introduce you to the rest of the gang. this is t, what you saying brother, cool, he's been with us for a minute now and he's coming on really well. he's showing a lot of promise and enthusiasm, so yeah he's watch out for a man like t. reece, he's just started with us, you've literally been with us a couple of days, but he's been trimming for a bit. so new guys, we've built the team stronger. and finally, bon, what you saying brother, he'sjustjoined us from jagged edge which is another
2:35 pm
barber shop in bedford. so, yeah, man, this is the team. my role in escobarbers is i own it along side my father guy senior and my brother guyjunior. i'm not actually a barber myself but i'm here every single week, it's a very communal place, guaranteed to see someone you know, a smiling face, and it's a very homely, warm environment. well, one of the perks of owming a barber shop is, i don't want to say free haircuts because i still pay, butjust getting the option to get a little shape up or any kind of trim at any given moment so you're always fresh is definitely a bonus. cutting the boss's hair is never a problem, it's franko, he's like my brother. family, man, this is my sister, it's all good, it's easy. yeah, it's all right. he's got nice hair to cut. so the trims always come out ten ten on franko, so it's good, not too bad. working in a barber's shop as a woman is interesting, it's definitely different to any otherjob i've had.
2:36 pm
obviously i'm around men every day all day. how are you doing? how have you been? yeah, not too bad, . same stuff as always. got that lovely stress of night shift. - and it's a very male dominated area so the vibe's different, the conversations like what they speak about. so if i'm doing night shift, - that'll be it, after a few weeks i'll get used to it. you though you'd get into a bit of a routine? yeah, i thought night shifts will be easy, but no. - i'm such a morning person. working in a barber shop you get to be creative, speak to people, and be an ear for people to vent out to which is nice. you get so many different types of people that come into the shop, all different ages, they are all from different places and they've all a different story to tell. every day is a school day, you are always learning something about different people and you've always got some interesting to hear about or talk about. so the barbers here are more than barbers. they are creatives, obviously, but they are an ear to talk to, someone to confide in, a friendly face. a lot of people see their barbers more than their friends sometimes
2:37 pm
and you have a lot of deep conversations with these people and you become a lot more like family, so a lot is shared in a barber shop and that communal aspect is a very big part of us. fabio, my brother originally owned the shop and he was the barber, he was the star, he was the main reason people went to that shop for his energy, his dna was in the walls, you could feel, breath, hear, everything in that shop was fabio down to a t. so if you saw fabio in the street, you would definitely notice him, he would be dripped out wearing the best clothes, looking his best, just enjoying life, walking with a bounce.
2:38 pm
if you knew him he would greet you with such a happy welcome, he'd hug you, he'd want to know about what's going on, he'd make a proper song and dance and fuss and make you feel special. if he saw you as family, or really close, he genuinely cared and wanted to help and make your day better. he was the main guy, man. but sadly he's not with us any more.
2:39 pm
0n fabio's last day i understand that he was having a bad day, on the evening he went to the woods to have a cigarette and that's the last time that anybody saw him. that was... ..the worst day of my life. ijust remember the policeman calling over my mum and my dad, obviously i went over and theyjust said the words you just don't want to... i don't want to hear. ijust remember falling to the floor, screaming that it wasn't true. and it'sjust really hard knowing i won't have him there for the rest of my life, no—one will. i was angry. i'm not now. i feel so sorry for him. a 29—year—old man can i think he's got no way out and that's his only option. i feel guilty because l he's my little brother. i didn't think he was as bad as he was, no—one did, -
2:40 pm
otherwise no one wouldn't have let him ever do that. _ so i'll always feel guilty for that. part of me went with him as well and i've never been the same. he did get some help. he went to a couple of counselling sessions. it was hard to start with because i know he would have hated that, i know my brother, i know he would have hated that. but he went to a couple of sessions, we kept in close contact with him, but eventually he manged to convince us all that he was fine, that it had all gone, everything was back to normal and he felt 0k. and after a while, you gradually believe that. that's when we all got our head stuck in our own lives and just thought everything was going to be ok, when clearly these problems hadn't gone away at all. that's something i fully regret. i wish i did more as a brother
2:41 pm
and just listened and checked in more and wasjust there more. hard to believe that he's behind there. that's a great photo of him, though, isn't it? yeah, yeah. 100%. pure him, isn't it? with his beard. that beard was his. the fab beard. mr perfect. when i go and see fabio at least two or three times a week i still can't believe that my son is in this mausoleum. but i'm hoping that he's looking down and looking after us and he's in a better place. this was fabio's station, he was the first person you saw every time you come in, like that friendly, laugh, face. i don't know where that is from, i don't know if you know liv, that photo. but that's just classic fabs — everything on show, take some
2:42 pm
photos of me, please. this is the door and as you can see it's just filled with memories, photos, times that people shared with fabs. there's a lot of memories on here. even looking at it now when i'm talking with you i'm just getting flashbacks to certain moments that i'm looking at. yeah, so many great memories, man. it's really hard for me to really fathom or properly understand how tough it must be to put on an act. it sounds bad saying it like that, but to make it so believable to be ok when you are not and to fool everyone as well, fool most people that he was absolutely fine, there was nothing wrong, how it would drag you down to try and pretend you are ok when you are not. since fabio's been gone it's literally so different in her because he was such a loud energetic friendly, loving person, you could just feel him in the room, see him in the room,
2:43 pm
hear him in the room. and now it's just not the same. we make it work but it's just not the same. in the beginning it was really hard, still is hard, it was lonely but now i'm like trying to use my pain and do it for him if that makes sense. this is his baby and i know how much he loves this shop so i'm trying to use his love for it and just carry that and continue to do what he would want me to do and that's be in here and continue to cut hair and make him proud. since losing fabio, myself, his family and some of the barbers in here have decided that we want to take part in a mental health training programme. that's because we want to do something about this and we don't want anyone to go through the same thing. i definitely want to people feel like they can speak openly and honestly about how they're feeling because i do feel like there's such a stigma right now that men can't speak out because it's not a manly thing to do, or you shouldn't feel that
2:44 pm
way, or they often feel ashamed or embarrassed, and that's something i completely want to break because i feel like men should never ever feel like that. hey! hiya! samsons academy is more thanjust a gym — we are a registered charity with the charity commission uk. we don't just look after the physical health and wellbeing of somebody but we also look at the mental health and anything that falls under that umbrella
2:45 pm
in regards to mental illness and so forth, counselling, therapy, etc. just want to introduce you to anita, clare and kelly and they do a lot of work around suicide intervention. so guys can you tell us just a little bit more about the online training? the training equips people - to understand more about suicide intervention, how to support - somebody, how to have those open and engaging conversations, - how to spot signs and symptoms that somebody is struggling i with their mental health. we've lost fabio, so i can relate to it, we can relate to it, and i think that what you are doing with this online course is just amazing really because if you can stop one person then it's been worth it.
2:46 pm
sometimes, men need to have a greater influence over men's mental health. yeah, sure i feel that. and i think that sometimes being in the space where men bond and men talk can have a massive impact on their engagement, the topic of their mental health if it's that right situation. it's that peer supporti environment, isn't it? if one man starts to talk - about their thoughts or feelings |then it can encourage and engagej somebody else to and then before you know it you have got that open conversation and that _ encourages peer support. we all to a certain extent have our dark moments, but what we have to remember is that, in a 24—hour period things change, wait, don't do something drastic, it's your family that is left behind, and that's where the real damage is then done, and if people can realise that's where the damage is...
2:47 pm
what do you do? shake it? shake it, yeah. it's a thunder maker. i've had it for years. never used it. so obviously you guys know i've made a song for fabio and mental health and stuff. a guy called shocks from bedford was a guy that actually put the idea out there and me, mylee, dan, phizi, loq and too lippy, who are the artists on the song. they created the song. i made the instrumental with phizi and we all got it all in the right
2:48 pm
place arrangement wise and put the finessing touches on there. there's a couple of little bits which i think will make you smile. ok, so this is the song, guys, i really hope you like it. song plays. oh my god man. # i wish you would have told me what was on your mind. # cos look at all the blessings that you left behind. as a family we're all dealing with it together, but i think separately we all deal with it in our own ways. franko making the song, it is his way of releasing some emotion. everyone*s got their own way, some people go to the gym, some people go for a run or whatever.
2:49 pm
his is definitely putting it out into music. song plays. couldn't believe me ears when they said fabio was gone. i had a deep connection though i hadn't only known, walking with the glow the personality was strong and now i can't believe i'm sitting here patterning this song." i think fabio was an example of the problem in men today. because you don't want to talk, no one wants to talk. i don't know a man that if i sat them down and said what's up, they'd really tell you what's up, including myself. because we're men. that's apparently what we're meant to do, we're meant to just puff our chests up and keep it moving. that is a massive problem, how men are not able to talk to people. powerful.
2:50 pm
yeah, thanks. what do you say? did you enjoy it? no words. franko hasn't done itjust for fabs. he's done it to help everyone. he's done it to bring awareness and to sort of in this day and age in young people to send a message that, no matter how hard you are, no matter how much pride you've got, or who you are, it's ok to talk, and, if it helps one person, frank's done hisjob. i'm just about to start the training. i am a little bit apprehensive about it because i know it'll bring
2:51 pm
up some memories and ifs and buts of my own case with my brother. let's talk. we need to talk about suicide. the one thing i hope i'm going to get from this training isjust more awareness, knowing how to open these conversations, what to say, what not to say, how to be sensitive but also assertive about these sensitive situations and i'm hoping that i will be able to pick up on these things moving forward with myself and also other people. this training may be challenging, especially if you are a suicide - survivor or have been bereaved by suicide. i the suicide intervention and prevention training will give the delegate cohort the skills to be able to recognise where there are early onset of suicide ideology, as in suicidal thought, or even serious self harm.
2:52 pm
the project is really important, too many people are dying, too many young men are taking their own lives, not enough people are listening sometimes. i think it speaks for itself why it's so important, it's about preventing the early demise of somebody taking their own life. now that you've completed i the training, there are three things we want you to do. see, see the problem. say, say the words. signpost, signpost to support. on behalf of us all, - we'd like to say thank you. thank you for very _ life—changing conversation that you are about to have. it's quite triggering, yeah, it's quite upsetting but i'm glad i've done it. hopefully going to be able to help others. the training has been very emotional and hard, but the positives, i've learnt how to see these signs
2:53 pm
2:54 pm
it is about being comfortable to have those conversations so the knowledge is really powerful in enabling you to help somebody else. what helped me and triggered me we shouldn't be afraid to mention the word suicide. a lot of people are afraid, they shy away from it and in men, most people if they hear somebody having problems, they will turn round and say, man up! that is the wrong thing to say. if i had taken this course nine months ago, 12 months ago, my son fabio would still be here. i could have helped him because i would have realised and i would have seen the signs of his pain he failed to try and sort out himself.
2:55 pm
what we have done today we have arranged a gathering of family and close friends to just have a celebration for fabio and also franco, will be playing a song that him and his colleagues have written. i am so proud of franco to actually do this. * ., ., , .,, ., do this. a lot of people have turned u - , do this. a lot of people have turned up. friends. — do this. a lot of people have turned up, friends, family, _ do this. a lot of people have turned up, friends, family, people - do this. a lot of people have turned up, friends, family, people on - do this. a lot of people have turned up, friends, family, people on the i up, friends, family, people on the track _ up, friends, family, people on the track it_ up, friends, family, people on the track it is— up, friends, family, people on the track. it is good to see people coming — track. it is good to see people coming together. i am excited to share _ coming together. i am excited to share the — coming together. i am excited to share the tune, looking forward to it. share the tune, looking forward to it without — share the tune, looking forward to it. without any further ado, i hope you enjoy— it. without any further ado, i hope you enjoy it — it. without any further ado, i hope you enjoy it. here is the tune.
